Baylan's personality, appearance, and demeanor reminded me of the Imperial Knights in Legends. It would be cool if Baylan would inspire the formation of the Imperial Knights by working with Thrawn during the New Republic Era. I think from at least Dave’s perspective lightsaber blades are weightless. He mentions in one of the clone wars episode commentaries that the blades are weightless and that’s why you need the force to be able to wield it proficiently. I think it was in the commentary for holocron heist
@jeremyjohnson9778
Жыл бұрын
the problem i have with the weightlessness thing is that we clearly see the characters utilize some kind of weight. Obviously the actors are using props that have weight to them; but think about it this way: take a flashlight and turn it on (as we all have since first seeing Star Wars) and whomming it around. THAT 'blade' [beam] is pretty much weightless, and it'd be very difficult to genuinely fight with. Then look at TPM after Maul knocks Obi off the platform, but Qui-Gon keeps fighting. When Obi force jumps back up to their platform, he ignites his saber and spins it (because of the weight). The only way one would be able to do this is if their hand is at the bottom of the hilt because the rest of the hilt would be the weight that he's spinning since "the blade is weightless" - except his hand is not at the very bottom, which would've made it look like a sloppy spin (see flashlight). I love how Baylan’s lightsaber grip is the same as how you would wield an actual longsword - one hand near the blade and the other towards the bottom of the handle. This way, you have more leverage when you are attacking with your sword. This is based on actual medieval manuscripts of how sword fighting was taught, and leans even more into the notion of Baylan and Shin’s knightly design. Small details like this make the show that much better for me.

Also the Crossguard stance in Jedi Survivor clearly has a lot of weight to it, as well as extended blade. When Cal picks it up, he says it has a "custom emitter". Not sure if this custom emitter is what allows the saber to split 3 ways into the crossguard shape or if its what allows the saber to be longer with more weight. Either way, its another example of a lightsaber having different settings than the standard blade we are used to.

I saw his fighting as a hybrid between the crossguard stance from Jedi Survivor game and Sith. Not too knowledgeable on all the stances from each side, but his style almost reminded me of the way Medieval knights had to deal with their swords in the era they were in. They were long, heavy, and slow, only tall + medium/heavy builded people could wield those swords & do massive damage with them. Baylan's moves showed purpose with every swing & he did a phenomenal performance. I hope future actors can learn from/build from his acting/fighting - - mind you his fighting was coming from a choreographer so maybe a shout out to the choreographer in this particular scene, not overall series. For the Anakin/Ahsoka scene I agree with what you previously mentioned about how Nic Gillard should've been casted to choreograph that scene, would've been way cooler than the current production, not to say the current is bad, but it would've been way cooler lol

Styles make fights -old boxing proverb. Saber Form styles matter. If you go back and watch Dooku fight-Red or Blue (early career in Jedi: Visions) he always used a one handed fighting style. Style impact the weight as much as the settings-and Dooku was one of the only in the modern era to master Form II Makashi-specifically a light saber dueling style. His speed was arguably as fast as Yoda’s. What I think we are seeing is a new master of Form V namely. Interestingly enough, this is both Anakin’s, Vader’s and Ashoka’s namesake style though Skywalker used Djem So, while he shifted it to the Shien variant for Ashoka. Anakin’s use of the style changed dramatically after becoming Vader as he wasn’t able to use the acrobatics or mobility nearly as much--and became much more of a fundamentalist along with augmented power/telekinesis. Ashoka was never trained to fight this version of the style-and you’ve seen her in the past show difficulty standing in front of this powerhouse version. I think Baylan is a descendent of Vader’s use-and you can see Ashoka still struggled. Hence, the finishing of her training. Anakin never trained her in this because he became something else-but now he can be all things for her now-he even told her I haven’t shown you everything. Note-she chose to mimic the style rather than rely on her original style-going toe to toe with arguably the best practitioner of Form V we’ve ever seen-Anakin with all his mobility and gifts-and the strength of Vader.

Never really thought on that on that till now. Great insight. Ever thought about doing an updated meaning and versions of lightsaber colors and settings? I've played the games and even tabletop style learning of these things but never really thought on how lightsabers could have a weight or such. In a way the Dark Saber showed how it was difficult to wield and in some ways was heavy to those that were not really worthy of it or such. Also I noticed more that Ahsokas lightsaber style is more samurai looking with how the hilt is curved and how her stances are in that episode. Perhaps she could be creating a new style? I know its probably just stuff I'm missing or looking to much into it but this would be interesting to look at.

I’ve always felt that the ‘bleeding’ of a crystal aspect that came during the Disney era was one of the cooler parts of new canon. It made the sith and inquisitors appear to all have a shared hatred over Jedi, which makes Baylan and Shin’s orange reflect on that in a different way. I like Theory’s idea of orange being a more righteous justice and that translates well to the new characters so far.

Given that a light saber is essentially just a constant beam of energy, I like to think of the "weight" of the blade behaving sort of like thrust. It is being pushed against the user by the emitter on the hilt. As such, these heavier swinging techniques would be more a out controlling where the blade is propelling itself rather than finely controlled self corrections. This would also explain why some swings following a certain pattern appear faster, whilst others are slower. Some movements and swings take the blade against the direction of thrust, whilst others follow the direction if thrust.

With Vaapad I think Baylan was baiting Ahsoka to tap into her dark side, which he succeeded in doing as Ahsoka used the dark side move on Shin. So the more of the dark side that Ahsoka used was only working against her and strengthening Baylans attacks with Vaapad being a conduit for that power and then ricocheting those attacks back onto her.

Baylon cannot know Vaapad. Mace created that form, and the only other Jedi that come to mind that he taught it to were Depa Billaba and Sora Bulq. Baylon could be a practitioner of the Juyo variant of Form 7. But he seems to use Ataru, just not the acrobatic aspect of it (similar to Qui-Gon). Don't forget Mark (Luke) and David (Vader) were told that the sabers were really heavy and had to use two hands like Conan the barbarian, Excalibur etc. (ESB) when we got to the prequels George changed his mind and said that sabers were less heavy.

I haven't been involved in SW movies or games in quite some time, but I do recall that the color of the saber had zilch to do with power or weight, but rather was just a result of the crystal being used. The jedi used it to distinguish the force wielder type (Guardian, Sentinel, etc), whereas the sith just went red because...bad?

Something that I haven’t seen mentioned yet is in episode 4s duel between Baylan and Ahsoka at 20:57 he amps up the power/weight of his saber to overpower Ahsoka

I feel that Baylan was a scholarly Jedi who knew a lot about Jedi history and took an interest in ancient stories (pathway to Peridea, etc.). He probably resented Anakin's downright unscholarly approach to practically everything back when he was a younger Knight. He may have started with the yellow lightsaber color, often associated with academic pursuits and protecting Jedi knowledge. Perhaps he was the strongest Temple Guard on Coruscant, but sent away for some unknown reason when the events of Order 66 took place (which is why he survived). He probably blames himself--in a parallel to Ahsoka--for not being there to try and stop Anakin from killing the younglings.

He has a fighting style like anakins in terms of slashing down hard strikes to overwhelm their opponent with a aggressive offensive onslaught. Match that with his brute strength and that makes one hell of an opponent

In the original Star Wars battle between Obi-Wan and Vader, Lucas wanted the light sabers to be portrayed to be heavier, more powerferful weapons which is why the battle wasn't that acrobatic. In Empire and RoTJ, the light saber battles were made to be more acrobatic and engaging and I think this fits in well with what you're saying. Duelists can adjust weight and length of their blade according to their fighting style. As far as Baylan and Shin's alignment is concerned, I think like Ashoka they are Grey. Just different Shades. Now that Ashoka is white, she has more conviction about who she is and what she's about which will allow her to win at the end. Shin is a lot closer to the dark whereas Baylan is a diplomat who embraces the shades of grey to get the best possible outcome ... say like in a negotiation.

mace was a dual force user, Dual force users are the strongest when it comes to lightsaber battles, as they are capable of using both the light and the dark (to some extent and even more) amplifies as the user fights. Being able to switch from emotional to rational mid fight.

I remember setting to blue then spamming the mouse back and forth getting 50 swings on someone... no defense could block it.. oukast 2 was a great game. Dismemberment mod was the best addition to it ever.

The Outcast and Academy games both had that lightsaber combat. But Jedi Academy also added styles for 2 sabers and a singel 2 bladed one. Baysides you were alble to make your own Jedi! I loved it!

I really dig Baylan as a character. Both mentally and aesthetically. He fights as if he's using a Scottish claymore, but in saber form

Current canon on kyber crystal colors was pretty much entirely explained in comics and also one episode of the Clone Wars show. Kybers are clear/colorless by default and get their color when they bond with a force user, that color can be in shades of blue, green, yellow and apparently purple (even though we have only seen Windu have that but it was never expanded upon so we can safely assume that's just a color kyber can have after bonding). Red color is what you get when you corrupt an existing crystal through a process called "bleeding" where dark side users can pour all their hatred and anger into the crystal and bend it to their will. Kylo Ren has famously failed in this process which resulted in a cracked corrupted kyber crystal, it made his lightsaber unstable and required the two side vents. Ashoka's white lightsabers are related to this process as white is what you get when you purify a corrupted/red crystal. Her current white crystals are from an inquisitor she defeated in the Tales of the Jedi shorts. Black, only seen in the Dark Saber was never canonically explained whatsoever and probably never will as Disney dropped the ball on that side-story in Mandalorian. Now with Baylan Skoll and his not-quite-red crystal, we know he is not entirely on the light side of the force and theories that are most likely to be true are the ones that suggest that either his crystal has been slowly corrupted over time as he turned to the dark side, though he is not fully on the dark side so the crystal isn't fully corrupted yet or that he attempted to bleed it and failed as he didn't have anyone teaching him how to do it. Color has generally no bearing on fighting style though. In a canon book called Lightsabers, is it mentioned that lightsaber blades are weightless.

Reminds me of mid evil times, swinging a big 2-handed Claymore sword. Awesome, though, like you said, could leave you open for attack.

I always wondered if there was an adjustment to power, I know it's there in the games but I always thought that was just game logic. But it does make sense because watching the flashback with obi and ani training you just have to stop and wonder how no one lost a limb training.

I remember Corran Horn's custom saber that had an alternate longer blade of a different color if you twist the handle a certain way.
