Just wanna share, I MIA-ed on my 10 year long friends for a few months before and I entirely ignored their messages and their concerns. I wouldn't say it was an depressive episode for me, more of an anxiety episode for me. We were supposed to meet for one time, then I overslept and I started to panic and was afraid to tell them I overslept again. I have a record of oversleeping and being late for a few times so I was actually scared of losing the friendship, like what if one day when they say "Enough hor, we all don't like your disrespectful time management." I was just so afraid, so my whole brain just mentally shut down and told myself to detach before they detach you. So I started to MIA. After a few times they reach out to me, they reach out to my boyfriend (LDR but I contact him everyday so they were able to find out I was physically doing okay.) So when they all found out I was okay, they all actually dropped me messages saying that they understand my mental well-being and will always be there for me. That's where I saw that I really have to step up and conquer my mental health and apologize to them and thank them for being so understanding. Till now I still will have anxiety of being "thrown away" as friends, but I'm making conscious effort to show myself that I am conquering my mental health and taking responsibility of my actions and also do my best to explain situations that were not within my control. It is because I have such patient and understanding friends, that has given me more courage to be better than the "me with mental health handicap".

As what you have mentioned, "thoughts of being thrown away", that itself is an anxiety and overthinking. In addition there seem to be a certain kind of self-sabotage involved due to the anxiety. Not sure if you ever hear this before but anxiety is like a vicious cycle. I have suffered from my fair share of anxiety and depression and to be honest, being aware of your thoughts is the first step and is very important and you are aware of it so that's great! What got me out of it or at the least reduce the occurrence and severity is through counselling, therapy and some self-help video i found of youtube. I was told by my psychiatrist, human brain will never stop thinking. The first step is to realise that you are ruminating over negative thoughts and you need to convert those thoughts to more relevant and useful information. If you take a step back, you realised what you mentioned actually never happened but why are you letting yourself feeling that way? Don't let the inner-voice tell you what can happen in the future, instead focus on the current situation, stay in the present. My way of staying in the present is through mediation. By staying in the present, it does allow you to block off the negative and unwanted thoughts and focus on things that are more relevant. If you haven't tried exploring mediation, you can try but most importantly find something that can help you relieve the anxiety, that's what keep you growing. P.S: Just sharing some of my soft-skills i adopted and learned.

as someone who is a perfectionist and a workaholic, it matters a lot to me if work is completed well but if someone says they are going through some stuff then we should be more understanding and approach the situation with patience, the fellow is thinking about bigger battles than group work. And if they are lying, then okay that’s on them for using the term so loosely.

24:14 Dat laugh thou. Sad that you wanna give the benefit of doubt every time a person cry mental health or depression. When that person really breaks down, the person will become so numb that it creates a new divide. In the end, said person will turn into a castle of glass. Crawling through the endless pit of where belonging is sought. In the end, its one step closer... What is done? It gets burn down, waiting for the end. " All it takes is one bad day... " Always give the benefit of doubt, even though said person cries wolf. Cos never know one ends up as a headline on the news... Then it will be, One step closer a little too late.

I love both their perspectives!! All the uni stories are very relatable and there's progressive ways of dealing with each issue. I think I resonate more with Brenda cos I feel it is important to have that dedicated loyal clique of friends to get energy from others while also being independent to some extent when it comes to taking initiative, mutual respect and responsibility.

my advice to the mental health situation - i do think they should reach out to their group member to see if they are doing okay and tell them to let the lecturer or professor know about it. however, do not pry or ask too many questions

the onus should be on the school to handle such cases of mental health, not other students. its obviously unfair for the other groupmates who have to tank the project. just fail that person for peer review or email the prof if there isnt any.

This “mental health” words… overused. Ppl are using it as excuses for everything. Bring it up to the lecturer and change the leader. Get someone else to hold the fort. Depressed dude can still be part of the team. Just not the leader. Period.

I think he can't even be a part of the group tbh if his episodes are so frequent or bad that he can't respond for 3 weeks? Perhaps make other arrangements and talk to the teacher/lecturer instead. Yes, mental health is very important but because he is cognizant of his state, I think the onus is still on him to be somehow responsible. Even if it is just to reply messages.

@@ebonyloveivory Ya, I think the main point is that he volunteered to be the leader but he bailed his teammates so in the first place he should have taken consideration if he wanted to take up the responsibility. If not the very least is to say he is not feeling well and apologise, if I were the teammate, I would be very furious
