Just a little note for people trying to understand what you are doing to make the drums poke out of the mix: Remember “to make something big you make the things around it smaller” because audio is all relative. There’s no loud without quiet. By decreasing the audio for a short amount of time after the transients (using a slow attack that delays the compression) it creates small “cuts” in the audio that emphasise the transient. It took me forever to understand this concept of compression so I hope this helps someone ❤

Peak-to-RMS knobs are really helpful tools these days. I had traditional set-it-and-forget-it compressor emulations on my busses until I found newer compressors with interesting controls to tighten up my mixes, per session. I decided on Tiger Mix Ultra by Acustica Audio based on their Power (Peak Crest), Transient, Sustain, Hold 2 (attack and release), and Detector Strategy functions. The curves are sampled from famous compressors, the preamp is another solitary sampled unit despite your curve selection. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on this comp. I went through the GS thread, tried direct competitors, read manuals, and settled on this based on sound quality, functionality, and ease of use.

Doesn't the release time for the compressor also depend on the tempo of the track? Or am I seeing this completely wrong...🤔 60000: bpm time :4 is the release time..? By a track auf 144bpm is the release time of the compressor 104...

Basically yes. Or at least I use it that way to enhance the groove.... Using the same formula as you. But I don't think all engineers use it that way

depends on your goal; my goal is minimal harmonics/distortions from the gain reduction; so no, tempo isn't always applicable!

At 5:06 you mentioned glue compression, everything having a ceiling and so on... any recommendations for a tried and tested way of doing a good glue compression? My genre of production is techno. Thanks!

What are you listening for when adjusting the peak crest knob in delta mode? How in time the movement is or something?

Thanks for your videos, you're a saint. One question though. What if I have more than one lowest fundamental frequency throughout the song? For example a song in two parts each with its own kick drum. Should I just just automate attack and release?

Thank you for all the great bits of advice! Would you still use the same settings for attack and release if you engage side chain detection at a higher frequency, would it be ok to set them faster? Does attack and release need to have the same value or can we compensate for a total value of ms required in the formula (If we set faster attack and release to 1/8 or 1/16 note value)?

The DAW audio, Thankfully for only that snippet in the intro was comped into the dialogue channel and processed with the dialogue processing; I've currently just went into KZitem editor now to trim that snippet from the video... will probably update in a few hours.

You’re describing the behavior of a capacitor charging / discharging through a resistor. While this is part of the circuitry needed for a simple way of producing an RMS estimator, it is also an ancient way of doing it. Many analog compressors will use constant current sources, and some even allow for a nearly immediate snap to the value in the case of an incoming peak. And in the case of digital compressors it’s obviously even more varied what the designer can think of. If that wasn’t enough, different manufacturers consider different definitions of attack / release time. So all in all, if you want to see what your compressor does, just look at the output waveform, easy.
