Very informative videos. Do you have a couple chair recommendations (up to $1000 budget) for someone with lower back/butt/ tailbone pain? I'm not sure if a firm or a soft seat cushion would be better. I currently have a cheap mesh chair and it has been the cause of this pain. Appreciate the effort you guys put into your videos!

Based on this, I got the Ticova. Damn, was that an idiotic move. First off, the armrests are *hard.* So hard that I regularly hurt my forearms. Then the squeaking. Started very early on, I checked the screws, tightened them as much as I could, but… didn't stop, got worse. In the first month or two. The worst thing about this (and apparently most office chairs) is that the reclining feature also makes the seat tilt back. That's absolutely wonderful for circulation, of course. Gaming chair let you recline the back independently. Not automatically, but why would I want that anyway? The gaming chair I had before held up for about four years. Until the base plate broke. This Ticova… less than a year old, and the back is bent. Oh, I know how that must have happened. I reclined in it for a couple hours. Well, I did that in my gaming chair too, and the back stayed in place. As to the criticism of gaming chairs being restrictive and uncomfortable: nope, never experienced that. The only thing I *might* miss from the Ticova is the mesh back. Might.

I do get up and move around semi regularly, but it does mean sometimes I am in the same chair for ~15hrs. I have been struggling to find chairs that will remain comfortable usually due to seat padding failing over time, or backrest not being supportive enough. I am very pleased with my Fern. I like aggressive lumbar, so I got it with lumbar and digital knit. I'm also taller, so being able to adjust the height of the lumbar support is essential. I also think the digital knit or leather versions are almost essential for the Fern w/ lumbar, because the addition of 1/4 or 1/2 inch foam in the back (opposed to mesh) helps smooth the edges of the lumbar support. But if you can, you should find a store to try them out in for at least 30 minutes per chair.

(I'll be getting a chair cover to minimize the long-term damage but alas...) The mesh back is the main reason I'm having a hard time considering the Ticova due to the cats. How do you find mesh chairs hold up against cat claws (if applicable) and is the price difference of $300 CAD vs $1000 CAD worth it in your guys' opinion? If you code (or similar) for a living where you can end up sitting in a chair and basically not moving for 10 hours then I'm not sure this is the proper list for you. I have the Steelcase Leap and am looking for something else. Specifically the words "tilt" and "recline" seem to be interchanged a lot. For the Leap the back reclines but the chair does not tilt. After a string of long days this can really wreak havoc on your tailbone. Shopping for something that actually tilts properly and it appears to be a sea of so-so chairs. If someone could take a chair out of a modern-day Volvo and make an office chair out of it I'd worship the ground they walk on.

That's gonna be a tough one, considering they're all fantastic chairs. Other than those aforementioned differences, all 3 chairs have a flexible backrest and all the adjustments you need.

Would you guys consider comparing your refurbished Leap V2 vs Crandall's remanufactured Leap V2? I bottom out of just about every chair I sit in (due to my boney butt - 6' 1/2" 140 lb. male). The new foam Crandall uses (with additional 3/4" thickness) is intriguing. The thin seat cushion was a dealbreaker for me, but now I'm wondering if maybe I could actually use this chair after all. However, obviously installing foreign foam could negatively impact ergonomics and perhaps it's nowhere near as comfortable as the 1/2" dense foam you guys add. Kind regards
@btodtv

The shape of their seat pad and density of the foam they use is completely different than the original. Our take is always to make the chair feel as close to original chair as possible. Well since this is Ryan's list, I'm not surprised that he didn't mention the Aeron as he's known for not liking mesh chairs, especially mesh seats since they can cause uncomfortable pressure points on your butt that cushion/padded seats do not because they spread out your body weight better. The side bolsters on the seat and the hard frame for the backrest also make it a restrictive sitting experience and Ryan loves having more freedom of movement in his chair. That's why he didn't pick the Aeron in this video.

I dont understand how you can reccomend a $300 mesh chair when they sag after a year or two. People don't spend that much money on something they plan on replacing that soon. Unless you're buying high quality mesh, well beyond the $300 pricepoint.

I guess it would be because I disagree with your take. Maybe I could see that argument for a mesh seat but not the backrest. And truthfully, at the $300 or less price point, your goal should be to get 3 years out of the chair. If you can get 5, you've done really well. -Ryan

@@btodtv I can agree to disagree that my hyken i bought 10 months ago has a sagging back that makes me feel like I’m leaning on just the frame, a chair you ranked highly in this price range with the mellet. But I don’t feel that way about how long your goal for a $300 chair to last is. 3-5 years is how long iPhones last, not furniture. The only reason people’s chairs expire like milk is because it’s mesh. If the same chair was fabric, what would make you reasonably need to replace it in 5 years? Stains?
@btodtv

The Hyken is one is the cheapest mesh chairs available and a chair that all 3 of us ranked as F tier. It is one of the better options for under $200 but it is a bad chair when compared to the whole category. The 3 year expectation is because the chair is cheap. The parts are cheap, the upholstery is cheap. It’s is not built to last. Just like any other cheap product, it has a short lifespan. That’s why it’s cheap. Just because it is furniture doesn’t mean it will automatically last 10 years. -Ryan

hm, I tried almost all of the steelcase and herman miller chairs by now and found the fern (the only one I tried from haworth) to be one of the most unspectacular and underwhelming experience of them all. overall not as comfy as it looks especially the back (had it without lumbar, but it was still not that great), bad quality of the seat depth adjumstment mechanism, hard seat pad, and pretty cheap feeling armsrests for a chair that cost 1k, the arm pads thin and cheap feeling and the whole armrests were quite wobbly. I'm still on the hunt I'm seriously still sitting on a 300dollar amazon ergo chair instead of all the ones from the big brands. None of them felt like a premium product or comfier. Especially haworths fern in my eyes. They all just set the prices high and can not deliver or only in one aspect and everything els eis worse than on a 300dollar amazon chair

What $300 chair are you sitting on? I do agree that the Fern may have cheaper feeling armrests and maybe the seat/back comfort isn't going to work for everyone, although this isn't something you can just make your mind up about in a few days. Foam seat pads take quite a bit of time to fully break in, especially ones from quality brands. I do think that your expectations about these high-end office chairs may be unrealistic because a $300 chair will almost always be objectively worse than a chair from Herman Miller, Steelcase, or Haworth.

You make some good points about the Fern, but I don't agree that some random Chinese branded chair from Amazon is more premium than any high-end chair. The quality of parts, quality of adjustment, recline motion, overall build quality, and warranty will be so much worse. Also, I highly doubt the ergonomics will be better, considering that most cheap Ergo chairs are not manufactured by companies who do extensive R&D. My advice is that if you don't want to spend $1000+ on a brand new chair, then just get a refurbished Aeron or Leap v2 for half price.

@@WolfOfJustice "My advice is that if you don't want to spend $1000+ on a brand new chair, then just get a refurbished Aeron or Leap v2 for half price." The thing is, after I tried them, I wouldn't even want them refurbished for 300-500 because I know I wouldn't have a great time in them. They were just not comfortable enough. I could sit longer in my amazon chair for 10-15hour with no pain, even though it definitely has a cheaper foam pad which also already got thinner where my bumm is, yet no pains over that long sitting time but on all these expensives chairs I do get discomfort and pain. Even from just the seats alone, apart from the ergon features. Even for free, I could not sit for long in them. I just can't/couldn't. I tried all these high end chairs for about a month, 2 of them even for 2 months. Through out the whole testing times I always wanted to sit less, (which you could argue is good) but for such a "premium" chair, I want both, ergonomics and comfort all around the chair where I would want to sleep in the chair, not stand up or at least be able to not wanting to stand up. I would want to be able to forget the chair. Which even the amazon chair achieved better. And that despite having a cheaper foam, cheaper ergonomics. Like how? I get that the ergo features might not be great enough for the long run of my back but just how is it that these high end chairs not get true comfort right as well? it's just as important

@zuga - Okay, I know exactly what issue you have. You're forgetting that these chairs correct bad posture and other bad seating habits, which can take a lot of time to fix. Initially, when I got the Aeron, it felt more uncomfortable than my previous £160 office chair. However, as soon as I got used to sitting properly, it became much more comfortable for me to sit in for 8+ hours, something I could never do in my previous chair. The only times I've seen people complain about comfort issues with these chairs, is when they fail to sit correctly in them. I'm 100% certain you're not sitting properly, because chairs like the Amia, Fern and Leap v2 are a lot less polarising than mesh chairs like the Aeron. Fyi, an office chair isn't meant for sleeping in, because that's what beds are for, and it's very unhealthy not to take regular breaks, regardless of how expensive your chair is.

@@WolfOfJustice good posture or not, shouldn't for example a seat, whether mesh, foam or something like the embody be way more comfy no matter how you sit on it because well, it's a much higher quality of a foam, mesh etc. But I haven't felt that with any of the high end chairs, no matter if I was sitting all the way straight or not. That's why I send them all back in the end, because even after videos and guides of how to set them up correctly and sitting perfectly straight and correct I was still getting pain in my buttcheeks for example, or because parts were literally poking through the thin cushion. That's nothing a correct posture can eliminate. but I ran into simple problems like these on high end chairs but not on my cheaper chair with a worn down foam. Shouldn't I experience discomfort on this chairs seat as well? especially if I would sit incorrectly? but I don't. I'm just convinced they focused too much on ergonomic features on paper for a good seeling point and left out proper cushioning design.
