I can so relate to this! My flute section at my school has only 4 people and my band director didn't want to take one of them off to play piccolo so she handed me (an oboist) a piccolo part (I play piccolo in marching band). Little did I know, I would be playing piccolo, oboe AND english horn all in the same piece! I had all 3 separate parts on my stand and my worst nightmare is one of them falling off in the middle of a performance. Once we got the piece up to tempo, my instrument and part switches had to get done in about 5 seconds!

This past summer I got a new flute and it came with a piccolo?? lol yeah so now ive become my bands picc player and 1st chair flute. My band director also decided that this year we were going to play Stars and Stripes Forever for our veterans day concert and it was up to me to play the picc solo after only playing picc for about 3 months which was kinda terrifying. Somehow I pulled it off? Im still kinda amazed that I was able to do that lol

Somewhat similar in two musicals. 1. How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying I for some reason signed up to be the conductor...with no experience. I was assigned as assistant and there was a professional as the real conductor. I was to conduct two shows. I conducted one rehearsal which was an epic fail. Then the first show I needed to conduct happened and I was like “omg what am I gonna do?” I prayed. Then downbeat. And somehow I learned how to conduct right then and there. 2. Drowsy Chaperone I had to sub in on a Friday night. Was trying to get the music all week then finally got it Thursday afternoon (day before the show). Since I was a math major, I was focusing on finishing my math studying and had a Bible study thing at night so I thought I’d have Friday morning and afternoon to see how the music would work. I got a call at 11 pm from the conductor saying she forgot to tell me that she needed me at 8 am too. I’m primarily a flute/picc player, but the part called for those plus sop sax, alto sax, and clarinet. So I sightread the whole show on 4 instruments x.x (I don’t own a sop sax so I just used the clarinet). At one point, I was switching from clarinet to alto sax and ended up playing sax with clarinet fingerings! 😂 Luckily music is mathematically magical and somehow the fingerings happened to map to a part that was a harmony to my part so it was all still in the key 😮

I understand how you feel. I've had a wierd experience in band so far because some of the flutes in my band (which is like half the band) tell me that I play parts "wrong" when it's them.then I have one flute friend in my band and she helps me and boosts my confidence and playing skills. The rest of the band will compliment my playing. The flutes that tell me I'm "wrong" don't care about band and music as much as I do and because of that it seems to make them think that they're allowed to criticize me and try to bring me down.

This reminds me when I had to play flute, piccolo and oboe for Danzon No. 2 since our oboe was missing and in my band I am the only one who plays piccolo... and my conductor was even asking me if I could take a look on the violin part...I wanted to cry xD I literally had to separate the parts and pick the main points of each instrument like oboe at the beginning, flute and violin after and then picc, back to flute and violin again...my music stand was a hot mess!

I have played off of three parts at one time before...my band has no oboe and we were playing a piece that had a short oboe solo so the director gave me the oboe part and said to do the solo an octave higher. I was also switching between flute and piccolo, so I had three parts on my stand with notes "go picc", "go fl" and "go obo". I even photocopied the parts so I could put colored hi-lites so I knew to go from the green spot on picc to the green spot on oboe, or the blue spot on oboe to the blue spot on flute. It was fun. My other flutist doesn't play piccolo so I get to do all the picc parts.

OMG!!! Last year when I was playing 2nd flute in the Melbourne Youth Symphony Orchestra, the piccolo player had an 'emergency' and couldn't attend the concert. Our conductor decided to put me on piccolo and told me to drop my 2nd flute part wherever needed. I had literally no practice and was given a piccolo behind stage because i had left mine at home. Luckily the piccolo part was very similar to the flute part but it was still hard adjusting with the fingerings and embouchure. We played 'Coronation March' by tchaikovsky

Heh. Not too long after I watched this video I had to do something pretty similar in my high school's band. I play bass clarinet, and we're playing Holst's Second Suite in F. The piece is full of solos, many of which are baritone solos. So my band director gave me the baritone part to play on bass clarinet along with the bass clarinet part I already had. I never really realized how important rests are for wind players until I played through that piece, switching to the baritone part whenever the bass clarinet part had a rest.

I was subbing for my private instructor in the little mermaid. I had only 1 week to learn the whole musical of approximately 25ish numbers, maybe more. About 2 hours of music. Any way, I knew I had to nail this music so it wouldnt sound any differnt then when she was there. With only three full rehearsals, the first two were rough, but the third was when everything started to fall into place. I nailed every note on opening night. Another story was of when I was in region band. We were playing JoyRide by Markowski. In joyride, there are 4 crazy runs that are not based off any arpeggios or scales. No one else could do them, so I practiced them most of our 8 hour rehearsal. I sorta got them, but not good enough to perform them. I left them out of the concert and no one played the runs. Feel free to listen to Joyride to see how intense the runs are!

I had played two parts at the same time in a marching band show! There was not another strong member in our section besides myself 3 years ago, and there was this part of the show that had 16th note runs that were traded off between the first and second flute. Now, there was not an actual piccolo part written for that show, so I originally had to play the first flute part on piccolo. But low and behold, the split between the parts at that time would never line up no matter how much it was practiced in sectionals, so I took it upon myself to play the whole thing (basically not being able to breathe for about half a movement while marching!!)

I find myself pulling off moments like that in my concert band, we have a student who is a diva but only goes to 1/3 of rehearsals. I can only make 1/2 of them (we rehearse 2x per week) and she may show up 3 times in the entire month.the conductor started just expected to start playing the parts because he can't rely on her. The funny thing is she comes and starts grabbing piccolo parts and the conductor is not kind to her about it. But also she complains when new parts are handed out because she feels that it "is not fair she is overlooked"... The interesting thing about this is sometimes the piccolo players/soloists are sometime pushed or requested to be in those parts because the conductor finds that the other players may not rise to the challenge or necessarily be able to deliver the amount of effort needed
@JustAnotherFlutist

Well, Joanna, I am not sure I would have done the same thing in a similar situation. I am sure you felt like it was the best decision at the time. And it probably was. However, when people are faced with challenges like that, they step up to the plate and make it work. And they grow. It might not have been as successful as it was when you played it, but we learn through failure as well as success. My principal's faith in me combined with parts that were way above my playing level made learn how to work methodically on my own to get difficult picc rips up to tempo in short periods of time, and that made me the player that I am today. Had she been stepping up instead of encouraging me to, I wouldn't know what I am capable of, which is a lot more than I would have ever imagined three years ago. She must have been scared out of her wits trusting me with those parts, but I am so grateful she did.
@JustAnotherFlutist

That's awesome! I would have done the same thing, but there really wasn't enough time for this particular piece. The poor second flutists were already having a hard enough time with the flute parts, and as far as I can remember, none of them owned a piccolo (only the firsts did). I'm still super proud of them, and they learned a lot!

I also had to play 3 parts but not for flute, for clarinet. At the time I was playing A clarinet, we had no Eb clarinet and my Bb clarinet was broken. Outside of music, in the world of Monster Hunter, I managed something I am told is technically impossible. I took down Caedeus, the end game boss that grants me access to high rank gear, without a functional L or R button. Took several dozen tries of optimizing things, and I still only came out of it with like 30s to spare (for what I think was a 45min time limit). All I wanted was access to the gear to let me play with my friends at their level, and the irony is, beyond that feat, I'm still the worst in our group, and usually the reason we fail missions.

I had a similar situation. I play in a really, really, really tiny community band. We were doing a band arrangement of Polovstian Dances. At the time there was just 2 flutes (now our section has grown to a huge 3 flutes). The other lady in the section was playing the 2nd part and I was playing the 1st part. There's one part of the piece where the 1st flute and piccolo go back and forth in a solo section. So I ended up playing the 1st and piccolo part in that section. I ended up doing it just on flute since it was physically impossible to switch back and forth that quickly and I wasn't playing piccolo that concert since the ensemble was so small. I think it worked out okay.

I remember playing actually 4 parts at the same time oO I was playing the Piccolo / 3rd flute part. Also in my orchestra there was no oboe but the piece we were playing had an oboe solo and my conductor asked me to play it on flute. Then one day before the concert our first flutist got sick and could not play the concert. But there were some 1st-flute solos in the piece which had to be played and I was asked to do so. So I had my own piccolo / 3rd-flute part, the oboe-part and also the 1st-flute part. Then like 1 hour before the concert one of our 2nd flutists got sick, too and the other ones did not feel like being able to play the 2nd flute solo. So well... I did that, too. I had 4 different parts on my stand and only one rehearsal to play through it before concert. I was so stressed but I knew there was noone else who could have played it so I did. Also I had no time to put my flute or my piccolo on the instrument stand so I just layed it on my lap when I had to switch and the whole time I was scared that one of them might fall down.

I just subscribed to you channel two weeks ago and I love your videos so much! I love your motivation and encouragement . Im section leader and first chair and I don't have the typical characteristics of a section leader of being so confident and other things but I still want to improve upon my self in becoming a better leader and your videos are really helpful so thanks 😊😊💗💖 (the run on sentences are crazy lmaoo)

By the way, was the conductor Cyrus Ginwala?
@JustAnotherFlutist

Haha, he was the conductor of the chamber orchestra! Lovely conductor. However, this video is about the wind ensemble, which was conducted by Dr. Martin Seggelke (who I believe now teaches at Illinois State University?). He is FANTASTIC.

Hi Joana, I'm an 8th grader who just got braces.... I was aware that it would affect my playing but I still seriously need some help! Any tips?
@JustAnotherFlutist

Oh dear, I didn't get braces myself, so I don't know from personal experiences. I have a friend who constantly got her teeth moved around with braces and surgeries, and she said that she just powered through embouchure changes each time! If she can do it, you can too!!
