Ah, you mentioned you aren't as familiar with the Genesis library. Out of that batch, Atomic Runner and Alisia Dragoon are arguably the best of that batch. Even though you got waxed on Atomic Runner pretty quick, it is actually a solid run-and-gun among the more hardcore old Mega Drive arcade game heads. My only issue with Mazin Saga is that it isn't Mazinger Z proper, but that's just me. Still neat though. Wolf Team (who made Arcus Odyssey) eventually became the developers of Namco's Tales series of RPGs. If you'd like a recommendation for another Wolf Team game to try on the Genesis, I'd highly recommend Granada, a top-down free-form shoot-em-up. It was originally a Sharp X86000 game and the Mega Drive port is a good conversion. Sword of Sodan is legendary among Beep! Mega Drive magazine readers as the ultimate Mega Drive kusoge. It was originally an Amiga game that was famous for looking really cool on the Amiga and that's about it. But yeah, I'm a big fan of the Genesis/Mega Drive, and out of that batch you pulled for this video, most of those were mostly forgotten for one reason or another. The two big ones just coincidentally ended up being the first two, with Atomic Runner being For True Doom Head Mega Drivers and Alisia Dragoon being just a great game all around. Wouldn't mind seeing more random Genesis games. I feel like, even though the platform was popular back in the 16-bit era, retrospectives on the platform just aren't as common as they are for the SNES, which is a real shame. As for music, not everyone can be a Yuzo Koshiro, but there's some games out there that would surprise you with what they could pull off with that FM synth (maybe not most western games using the GEMS sound driver though...)
@mscottjohnson3424
Жыл бұрын
Oh man, Atomic Runner right off the bat? That game is excellent, but you have to treat it like a shooter. It's rock hard and you need to get good. If you're not into shmups, it's not going to be for you, but for those into that genre, it's an incredibly well made game with tight controls and excellent level design.

No Escape is in fact a movie license game for the Ray Liotta movie from the 90's by the same name ( in Europe it was released as ''Escape from Absolom''). It's a dystopian Sci-Fi/Actionfilm, about a Marine who gets sentenced to life and exiled to an tropical island that serves as a prison. So Wolf Team is super interesting. They started as wolf team and eventually split into two studios in 1994. Tri-Ace, makers of Valkyrie Profile and the Star Ocean series, and Tales Studios, under Namco, when they released Tales of Phantasia, and are still releasing major RPGS to this day. Basically, 3 people left wolf team (hence Tri-Ace) and formed their own studio. It's also why the series had so many elements shared between them. Clearly moving off the Genesis/Mega Drive was a successful move as Pahntasia and Star Ocean are fonsidered all-time classics, whereas Ernest Evans was not.

Seeing Alisia Dragoon on a blind play is fun, but it's the result of a collaborative effort between Gainax (hence their name being attached to it) and Game Arts ( The Lunar and Grandia people ) and Alisia Dragoon was the only action-oriented game of that collab. Why Dinos for Hire was weird was you managed to die on the intro stage, you were invincible to everything but instant-death there and was just a blast processing joke. And Mazin Saga is a weird version of Mazinger Z, one of the Big Go Nagai series, hence his name and DynaPro on the title screen, it's a weirder AU where Mazinger Z is instead a power suit that Koji wears. Absolutely wild we got that game released in the US. Red Zone's also just the developer just flexing everything they could do on the Genesis, since it's a glorified tech demo made into a full game. My absolute fucking condolences for some of these titles being the worst the Genesis has to offer like Sword of Sodan ( a bad port of a bad amiga game ), Outlander, and X-Perts.

The arcade Street Smart is SNK's original King of Fighters / Fatal Fury. and Mr. Karate from Fatal Fury is a reference to Street Smart. It was their 1st stab at a fighting game, and one of the last non NeoGeo SNK games. Also, theres a sign in the background (of the arcade version) that says King of Fighters, and the theme music is also the VS music in Fatal Fury 1. This port was obviously not done by SNK. I'd be down for some more Arcus Odyssey, Matt! Also, a few fun facts: Earnest Evans, its predecesor El Viento, and its sequel Anett Futabi are heavily influenced by Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos, with all of the games featuring creatures that appear in many of the stories. Additionally, Wolf Team would go on to become Namco Tales Studios, the primary developer of the "Tales of" series.

Without looking it up, I'm pretty sure Outlander is a renamed Mad Max due to licensing. I remember this game when I was young and I'm almost sure it was called Mad Max. This is based on the first movie. mind you. The scene where he one-handed shot a guy off his bike through the window was iconic back then.

Not-so-fun fact about Atomic Runner: It was originally released in arcades as "Atomic Runner Chelnov" with a very different plot and set-up where the titular main character was a Soviet coal miner who was caught in a nuclear blast that gave him super powers. This, combined with the character's name being very close to "Chernobyl" got Data East a lot of criticism from their perceived insensitivity and attempt to profit off the Chernobyl disaster. The company officially denied any intentional connection (though later accounts from Data East employees would partially contradict this), but the character's origins were changed, along with some graphical elements, for the Mega Drive/Genesis port, and the name "Chelnov" was dropped from the title for the North American and European release.

Spanish guy here. I was a SNES owner but I played most of this games as a child. Some of them were pretty well known such as X-Mutants, Last Battle or Alisia Dragoon. You always knew someone who had them and you played them at their homes. It's funny to see someone connected to the world of videogames who has never seen them. Nice video. The Earnest Evans reaction, I can tell you, was exactly the same back in the day🤣

Last Story = Hokuto No Ken localization they did as they couldn't secure the rights outside Japan (this same stuff happened with the Master System game known as Black Belt... which is a localization of the Sega Mark III Hokuto No Ken game), also the demo in text literally tells the entire story of the game without gameplay (and it's a pain in the gut to complete it as you cannot die at all 'cuz it's a YOLO challenge), Sword of Sodan... GODS!!! I dunno why did you have to put yourself to this, X-Perts... yeah, an Eternal Champions spin-off that acted as a sequel for Shadow's ending from the "Challenge from the Dark Side" Sega CD Eternal Champions, and it sucks, I didn't know about some of those games if you ask me.

Nice, I want to check it out Blades of Vengeance is a poor person's Chakan Cyber Cop is a terrible name. It is called Corporation in the UK - and the themes make more sense. The game was fascinating and had loads of really cool things in it Thank you for showing off Dinos for Hire and Ex-Mutants, I used to see those on my shelf and wanted to buy them but heard they were rubbish

I wouldn't call Storm Lord a "classic", but on some other consoles it was a gem - namely, things like the Amstrad CPC and Spectrum, which were not 16 bit systems. It had a number of ports, and while the older consoles didn't do so well in the graphics department, they were fairly playable and compared well against other things on those older systems. IIRC, the Mega Drive / Genesis version was actually produced on their own cartridges, without Sega's permission, due to a disagreement over licensing.

Atomic Runner is actually a really cool game, but it has one hell of a threshold to get over. Just check the options screen and you can see 9 different ways to map your controls. I personally tend to map it so A shoots left, B jumps and C shoots right.

Yeas, PLEASE, PLAY MORE OF THOSE WOLFTEAM games (Arcus Odyssey, Earnest Evans)!!! P.S. Also... 24:42 - actually, Zero Tolerance was pretty decent all things considered. No one can say the same about that attrocious Doom SNES-port, you know. And yeah, Cyber Cop sux ass... XDD 29:11 - Well, here I'm agree XDD 47:14 - XO Manowar was from Valiant Comics, not the Malibu 1:12:10 - actually...if I remember correctly, that's NOT just a helicopter game and you CAN INDEED play as one of those commandos. 1:25:34 - it's Brainiac, he was like that back at the time XDD 1:33:27 - OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! I have a childhood trauma (kinda) about this game, owned the actual cartridge, couldn't get my ass past some point the game (an early point, mind you). And I can't even remember you need to open all those doors to have the squad together o0 That's SO stupid... XDD

SO weird to see this stuff. Cyber Cop was originally on AMIGA Computers and called Corporation and was before DOOM I believe, real-time 3D (sort of). It was incredibly hard and poor frame rate. it had ALIEN-like crawlers that were on the ceiling that would scare the crap out of you. Looking at it now makes it look sad but back in the day, it was incredible looking. Se several of these games are Ports of AMiga games (68000 chip so easy ports, Stormlord, Sword od Sodan 20+ years ago they looked great). Last battle was Originally on the Sega Master System and updated for the Genesis, I do believe it was a Fist of North Star clone.

Hell no, some of those are really good games!! And done additional info: - Alisia Dragoon was designed by GAINAX, that maybe you know them for a little unknown anime called NEON GENESIS EVANGELION. - as other people said, No Escape is a movie licenced game. If you keep playing you will see a digitized version of Lance Henrikksen among others. - Red Zone is a fantastic, yet hard as balls game. If you would have landed the chopper in any of the bases you have to attack (or let the demo play) you would have seen that indeed, you pick any of the three characters on also a top view, to play.

Ex-Mutants isn't bad at all, sorry Matt, you're a bit harsh with this first impression lol. it's a solid product of its time, even if kinda unremarkable / mid tier. there are much, MUCH worse games on Genesis/Mega Drive out there. to me it's a good one - might say that because of nostalgia but I had completed it once again not long ago and had fun, it still plays fine for the most part. X-Perts, on the other hand, does suck imo - a confusing mess with horrible combat. ambitious and gimmicky but executed very poorly. although maybe there are, like, 3 persons across the world who might call it an "underrated hidden gem"

Cyber-Cop did indeed have a PC version, or rather, it originated on PC and got ported to the Genesis (for some reason). PC Gamer had a retro column on it not long ago. From what I can tell, it's honestly not that much less clunky on PC, though the graphics are better and obviously not having to manage that interface with the Genesis controller helps. It appears to play a lot like the original version of System Shock did, where you're clicking out of the view window to navigate menus and such, and then clicking back in to navigate the environment. Seems like it was overly ambitious for what hardware was capable of at the time, and games like System Shock 2 and Deus Ex hadn't been released and kind of standardized how you should design a FPS RPG like that.

Atomic Runner is far more playable if you change button layout in options to A=shoot left, B=Shoot Right, and C= Jump the default settings where you have a jump button, a shoot button and a Change Direction Button is way too difficult, this game is actually enjoyable f given a chance.

At least three of these games, Cyber Cop, Stormlord, and Sword of Sodan, were all ports of Amiga games. In all three cases, the Amiga games were better. Cyber Cop was...well it was still crap but at least it had a full keyboard to attempt juggling its excessive complexity. Stormlord looks pretty faithful, but they made the fairies put on clothes. Sword of Sodan actually sort of played like a game with responsiveish controls and everything, but your character had a shield that did nothing for some reason.

On the surface the snes seems more powerful, when compared to the Genesis and TurboGrafx-16. When you take away all the helper chips inside of the 80 or so games that use them, the snes has more trouble running those first-person and primitive 3D games, when compared to the Genesis at least. The snes library of games is huge and people usually talk about the same games over and over. It would be easy pickings for a similar video on lesser known snes games.
