@@TheWinterwraith yea SG shapes aren't for everyone. I had one because my favorite guitarist in a band called Dir en grey plays them. I picked up an MH-1000 ET late last year and still in love. I did replace the 81/60-TW with a 57/66 set but otherwise it was perfect, the SS fret are literally like glass... with the proper neck relief I'm able to keep the action about 1 mm on the high E and 1.2 on the low... of course the ET allows such fine adjustment I'm not sure I would be able to do that with any other bridge. I bought it for the ET to try it out and once I was able to get it setup for bends I play it almost daily. For those wondering, yes the guitar was in tune from Sweetwater when it arrived. I've found those plastic clips break over time but the LTD ones also use metal screws rather than wood as there are insets so it doesn't wear out over time, it's the little thing I think people miss but to me they mean they will last for many years to come. Was also VERY happy to hear about the neck dive or lack thereof... always loved the shape but sold every SG I've ever had because I hated the neck dive... may have to pickup a Viper this year!

I have an LTD VIPER 1000 DELUXE EVERTUNE but mine is not active pups - It actually has the passive Sentient & Pegasus pairing, but no locking tuners, no binding at all and no stainless-steel frets.. The Evertune is every bit of the sorcery that you describe with it being always tuned flawlessly (as is possible) and I actually broke my D saddle when attempting to set it up with perfect intonation and string action (heights) and frankly I won't ever attempt to set up an Evertune on my own again because it's downright torturous, but there's always someone who is qualified to set it up so that's fine and I agree that it's badass af. Not sure if I prefer the passive Sentient / Pegasus pair over the Fishmans or even the EMGs yours showcased, but they're certainly nothing to whine about and totally hold their own against the best of rest of the field, so.. Yeah, it's a great axe and not much to criticize about it.

As far as the battery cover screws are concerned, you did say that this is a prototype… Maybe it will be easy access on production models? Also the batteries on an EMG pick up should last between 1000-3000 hours if you don’t leave the guitar plugged in… If you can’t be bothered to find the screwdriver a couple times a year, maybe you should play a different guitar? Vipers are great guitars. Good video!
@Andrew_182

It probably won't be a different cover. I have an EC1000 with Fishmans that I just bought last year and it has the same setup for the battery cover. Not the biggest deal in the world (though fishmans eat batteries faster than EMGs), but a flip out deal would have been a bit more convenient.

When I was a kid starting out, the SG was the most metal guitar you could name. The shape, the fast neck, etc. But in the last 20 years or so they haven't had a very high profile in metal. Everyone always seems to like the way they look and sound, so why aren't they more popular? For what it's worth, I think it might be partly due to the balance. Much like strat shapes, they don't generally hang well down low. Outside of punk bands, you rarely see strat or SG shapes slung down low because they're just not ergonomically comfortable by the knees. It's the only reason I don't own an Eclipse, because I play my guitars Jimmy Page low. Just a thought.

The only thing a Viper and an SG have in common are the Devil Horns, that's it. The Viper is hefty and it's really more of a cross Fender Jaguar (the body is really an Offset) and a Les Paul for the heft and sustain. The Viper really is its own thing, it's a beast. Tone wise it's much beefier, even my Seymour Duncan pickups that were stock in my 2006 prototype model.
