Once Thordan has done his ultimate attack on normal, he's expended all his power and because he's not a combatant at all, he spends the last 10% just flailing pathetically (he's visibly winded and has a damage down debuff on him). The Thordan EX fight is a different story, you get the challenge you crave there, and is one of my favourite fights in the game.

I came from 7 years of ESO. I started trial with AuRa man/Dragoon and ADD, so I kind of tried a bunch of stuff, crafted, fishing, etc. ESO story isn't front and center and actually isn't really required to enjoy the game. So when I finally realized I left the MSQ story sit, I finished all the way to Shadowbringers and waited for Endwalker to drop. I saw the male Viera and instantly bought and subscribed. I made a bunny boy ninja and ran through the game (to date) in one big gulp. It made more sense since I wasn't trying to remember who and what as much. ARR became where I really looked at the Scions since I knew where they would go and do. I felt more a part of the team Heavensward on and felt more of the emotions. I can't imagine trying to do this all with people watching and interacting. Glad you are having fun. One thing I wish I thought of when I started was leveling similar jobs together so I didn't have to hold onto or repurchase a ton of gear. Running Dancer, Machinist and Bard, swapping between to level was a blast and made it less grindy.
@25xxfrostxx
6 ай бұрын
ARR isn't "bad", it's just a side effect of the development where they had to rebuild the game from the ground up and then buy time for the team to make Heavensward. That resulted in the very long patch cycle and quest marathon between ARR and HW. It gets slow at times but the entire thing is packed with very important world building information, some you don't even realize was set up until much farther down the road. I have never played a game with music I enjoyed more than 14. In ARR the cities were the only places with night themes, outside it was just the sound of the wind, bugs, and birds at night. Then in Heavensward Soken went to a light piano version of the day theme. Then later... he learned to weaponize it.
@leesakowski790
6 ай бұрын
Once you finished ARR "base" there were 100 MSQ quests you had to complete to be ready for Heavensward. 100 quests, already at max level, that felt like a lot of wasted effort. That is what killed it for a lot of people with ARR. I rolled a new character after Heavensward came out and I was already at nearly max level from the pre-Heavensward quests before even starting Heavensward.

On the disappointing Thordan fight, that is unfortunately a problem the game severely suffers from for max expansion level content. SE simply does not tighten the ilvl requirement for max level duties and it results it everything falling over MUCH faster than it did when the content was fresh. There are mechanics in many alliance raids that players haven't seen for years for this very reason.

It became a favorite of mine upon first hearing it, and I've included it in all of my orchestrion playlists for years now. Zone themes with the same kind of vibe in later expansions: - Stormblood: The Lochs night theme, "Old Wounds" - Shadowbringers: Lakeland night theme, "Unchanging, Everchanging" - Endwalker: the song title is "Neath Dark Waters (Scions & Sinners)" but saying anything else about it would be spoilers ;) These are honestly my favorite pieces of music in the entire game.

I've played WoW forever and still do. I stopped during shadowlands along with everyone else and played FF14. I loved it. The classes feel great, the story was amazing, and your character IS a protagonist. In WoW you are "hero" but one of millions. In FF14 you are the warrior of light, a scion, and the driving force of the story. You know there are others, but you make your choice (despite it not being impactful) and it felt good. In WoW, the main characters talk at you, but FF the main characters have to talk WITH you. The vibe of players in FF is far better than most players bases. WoW does a few things I like, multi spec classes, choices in style of gameplay, and personally I like m+. The combat feels way better in WoW. I love them both so much and they have what the other misses

The improvement to ARR in the form of cleaning up the quests def improved it. I played through it back in 2013, and i think why i enjoyed my time then was because it was new, I had to wait for the patches, and i got it in chunks, instead of having to play it straight through. I started playing 2 months after ARR released. I have fond memories of clearing coils back in the day, including my first Bahamut kill. As for Alex, I did it pre nerf to A3S, and was part of the static killer days, so i didnt do any of the savage alex til much later sadly. Reason, my static booted me, then fell apart weeks later due to A3S. Will say this be glad you don't have to deal with TP, and Accuracy rating. That added an extra level of difficulty to the fights that was annoying.

One thing you have to remember too. A while back they reworked a lot of the earlier fights/dungeons to accomodate the trust systm. For example, you mentioned acian prime. That fight was a lot different before the rework. A lot more stuff involved. Mechanics not so simple. That’s just one example. A lot of the story fights they did that way because the trust system is very calculated. Almost dumbed down. A lot.

Pretty cool to hear a more reserved take on base Heavensward story, and they echo a lot of the feelings I had as a sprout. I think now that I have played full MSQ I am a bit more forgiving in hindsight, but even still I had far more moments in heavensward story that made me frustrated than ARR. Where ARR follows a simple but consistent plot, HSW cannot stop interupting the main plot with side plots at the most jarring moments. Overall I would rate my HSW experience higher than ARR, but I enjoyed base 2.0 more than base 3.0 when I was playing it.

Honestly, a lot of issues tend to get emphasized when you get to the endgame of the game. Honestly, I am glad that you are enjoying yourself as getting into the game and experiencing everything for the first time is a largely different experience compared to when you get to the endgame. In regards to gearing, it really sucks ass that every job is played on the same character because that means you have one lockout per character. This means you can't clear on alt jobs and get different gear for different jobs. As someone who cleared the raid tier week one, it took me around 9 and a half months to get BiS on every single job. That was logging on and doing raids every week and capping on tomestones and buying them. This was the bare minimum, and I even went through troubles of getting sub-optimal GCD speeds just to make it easier for this goal. It becomes a massive hinderance when you have Ultimates, because gearing on that is very strict. You won't meet DPS checks without BiS. So when it takes 4 months to get maybe two roles BiS, you are locked into those two roles and can't play whatever you want in that content. Another thing to talk about is that you are a streamer, and that you have a community to pick through. Most people will sit in PF for hours on hours and will never fill, or struggle to find MINE groups for content unless its peak hours on weekends, even on Aether. Its something that you may get to experience but something not all players get to have. That being said, its your thoughts on the game based on your experiences, its just something to keep in mind ig In regards to blind raiding, a vast majority of players do guides and make people do guides unless its like day 1 stuff. This is really only in like the early game of content, when you do get into the true endgame and not older MINE content it tends to be ALOT different than your experiences now. Keep this in mind as you get there. Blind Parties do exist, but realistically its very very very very very rare to find. Janky Mechs are def just ARR/HW. They tend to be like that just like you said.

While this is old, suggest checking out crafting/gathering for an end-game thing. It's basically a mini-game in itself. Figuring out what stats you need and working your way up through the gear sets. I did it end of heavensward, which was ideal since that stage of materia is easily obtainable and super-cheap. Recommend doing it once anyway, if only to understand how it works.

Re: Enjoying A Realm Reborn over Heavensward, this was a pretty common opinion back in the day. I remember getting hyped for Heavensward but being relatively disappointed for a long period of time. The general sentiment with a lot of friends and myself is that we missed our normal cast of characters, the dungeons felt less inspired (felt like every dungeon was just hallways to a boss), and the zones were both annoyingly difficult and too large. I didn't think about it much because it picked up and became enjoyable throughout the expansion but looking back on it with the first WoW Exodus, it felt funny hearing the idea of "it gets good in Heavensward" I do really miss the remixed dungeons that ARR did, though.

I've consumed many stories to compare it to over the years. ARR is also, without a doubt, the worst XIV expansion story-wise. Many new players are confused about the hatred for ARR and you put it perfectly. Most veterans remember the old ARR. And that includes the gameplay and tedium. They cut a lot of tedious quests and increased EXP gain by a lot. Nowadays, you basically never need to grind for exp to catch up to the story. So the story's pacing is A LOT faster. The fact that you don't need to grind for story progress is something that alleviates issues of ARR, post-ARR and base-Stormblood.

So even with min ilv no echo. The power increase of even filler skills is why things drop dead so fast. For example back in ARR release Ruin the lv 1 arcanist spam spell was 120 potency, today it is 240 potency. This is just an example, but most skills at this point have twice the potency they did back when ARR and HW released. So you are still doing twice the damage even with min ilv no echo. It is noticeable in some fights more than others. Thordan is a fight where instead of a script like they are doing with more modern fights, a lot of things happen based on enemy hp.

man i played wow for 15 years, but was also a FF fanboy on consoles. never did i think FF could be a mmo (not because FF11 isnt, just graphically not my cup of tea even in FF standards) but after giving FF14s free trial a shot just before endwalker came out, binged all of ARR-Shadowbringers in 3 months. like you couldnt pay me to stop playing this game. can't believe i held myself back just because i thought i could never get that "Rogue playstyle" in another mmo. well ninja proved me so wrong. games really good, it has its rough parts but man. its really wild how it can pull you in if you want it to.

I'm going to start playing FF14 in a few days, but unfortunately because Dawntrail comes out in 3 months, I fear that I will feel pressure to blast through everything (MSQ, etc) in 3 months in order to be ready for Dawntrail. What would you do in this situation, still take your time?

Don't worry about rushing through a decade of content in 3 months. Take it at your own pace. You'll enjoy it a lot more that way. Being caught up with current content just means you don't have any MSQ to do until the next major patch.

@@JustRuss The extreme version was traumatic for me because i'm a sprout and went in blind -- I think i frustrated the tank. and the tank and healer got into an argument. but the tank was blaming the healer (and some others but he didn't name them) so idk who's right. i checked a guide and it turns out the tank might have been right ;w;

The way you voice your disappointment with Thordan makes me think you need a certain level of difficulty with your game so that you feel you truly triumphed, and I have to say... in the MSQ, you're never going to find it. In the main story, you are the hero, you are the amazing, what is impossible for others is effortless for you. You might recall a moment where Thordan looked up at your character in full shadow and asked "What ARE you"? - The WoL is just that terrifyingly powerful. You'll still find the challenge you're looking for in Savage raids, Extreme trials, and Ultimates, but you should learn not to expect it in the MSQ. Glad you're enjoying yourself otherwise.

I'm with you on that A Realm Reborn isn't bad, but I did also experience it pre-pruning, so everything, every absolute aspect between learning about Titan and fighting Titan, was just atrocious, but before Titan, and after Titan are great, because as you said, the base content does what it needs to do, lore building and so on. A Realm Reborn also has the advantage over all expansions in that there are so many dungeons and so many trials and then harder level 50 versions of dungeons alongside the extreme trials combined with the very cool raid. So many blue quests to make sure to unlock =)

For tab targeting. I been playing ff for 5 years and found a nice keybind is just having it target "nearest" enemy. And if a healer theres a keybind for target top of the list party member (which is always a tank).

While I would also say that ARR is the worst part of the game, it is more streamlined than it used to be and playing jobs through 1-50 is a lot more enjoyable (maybe not as a healer). I feel like for many people it's like saying the appetizer for this 6-course 5-star Michelin quality meal wasn't as good as the other courses.

If I’ve learned anything from other streamers, no one quits WoW :) Also it doesn’t matter how “behind” you are on the story since it will always be there. The important thing is if you’re enjoying it and doing what you want. Take as long as you need to do whatever you find fun. That’s the kind of game it should be :)

lol yeah. and tbh I don't even mind; as we like to say (repeatedly trotting out the one yoshi-p quote), ff14 is deliberately made so you can take breaks from the game. It _is_ nice however, that a lot of these streamers do go back to WoW, but never _just_ to WoW, and they end up playing a whole bunch of other things too

As a former WoW player myself(quit early in BFA), and someone who played through ARR before the trim, I can honestly say It gave me main line FF vibes, there are points that slow down yes, but I figured you had to do legwork/groundwork to set up a big pay off, which FF14 does so well. Something I like to say on the Shadowbringers vs. Endwalker debate, for those that don't pay attention to all the details in ARR, Shadowbringers will definitely be better, but as for those that DO pay attention to details, Endwalker is such a great payoff. Also definitely suggest doing all raid/trial series quests before you get to Endwalker, and the more jobs you level the better too; the attention to details in FF14 is super high, your choices and things you've done DO come back to visit you in unexpected places. I do agree, Thordan needs to be rebalanced to be more difficult, the outgearing it thing is a bit much; they had the same problem with the Endwalker final boss, but then they limited the item level of gear for that queue and now it plays out decently, challenging but not extreme level. They need to do that with Thordan too for sure. Replaying lower level content is part of why I became a Mentor in FF, as a former high end raider/raid leader in WoW I have a hard time not just telling everyone how to do the new content, but I ask them if they'd like an overview or if we continually wipe to a mechanic I'll explain what the mechanic is and see if they understand how to counter it. Example: Sastasha(Hard) first boss will put a DoT on the group and then cast Tailscrew(drops target to 1 health), which isn't normally lethal.... BUT the DoT then ticks when you're at 1 health.... and dead. So I explained the DoT+Tailscrew interaction and let them work it out. As for targeting in PvP... make a macro consisting of /targetenemy this will target the nearest enemy (player) to you, which while not foolproof allows you to more easily switch to a target more likely to be the one you need(especially as a tank or melee dps)

Now, to be fair, a lot of the content you do was A LOT harder back when it was released. Even when playing on MIL. See, classes have gotten potency changes on their abilities (changing how strong they are) since HW was released and then there was the stat squish, which had an unfortunate effect on pretty much all the older fights (the older, the harder they got hit) combined with how ilvl syncing works. This makes it so that older fights are just, kind of neutered in terms of healing and DPS. Tanking as well, but to a lesser degree. There are some exceptions, like the Coils of Bahamut, but very few. Actually, I can only think of Coils...

Very understandable about the Heavensward issue dissapointment... they haven't touch the Thordan trial since it was release in 2014, they should fix the issues of being super weak and anti-climatic to be epic like they did with ARR Gaius, Ultima Weapon and Lahabrea. Lahabrea used to be a 8-man fight but was very anti-climatic too...since he just died too. Ultima Weapon was 8-man.... you could eat every aoe back then and didn't even do 15% of your max HP lol Gaius didn't do anything either beside a fire puddle around him that everyone ignored because it barely did any damage.

Yeah, after a while. I still love ffxiv but I'm kinda at a point where i hop back and forth-- Generally for difficult and multiplayer content i play ffxiv and in WoW i play solo content as much as possible. Ive actually found that playing with a controller and the immersive addons in wow- using npcs for later dungeons, i have had a far superior experience. On Thursdays every week i raid with my group in ffxiv savages. We started with the earliest savages and now we are at p4savage

I still feel that the Vault should have been the natural end to the Heavensward story. Discovering the truth of the war, returning to Ishgard to confront Thordan, fighting through the Vault and taking on the HW as bosses would make perfect sense. Instead it’s like “No, you have to now go to super technological place in the sky that clashes horribly with the medieval vibes of the rest of the story”. Azys Lla feels so disparate and at odds with the rest of Heavensward for me.

I think the normal version of Thordan might need a difficulty tweak, for max level players there's the Unreal version currently and it has the epic feel the story deserves. I do think the normal version of the trial is one of the weakest and the trials get thematically better in Stormblood - although lots of people also say that expansion has one of the weaker storylines I also think that ARR expects you to slow down and smell the roses. It has a lot of ambient storytelling that requires you to be curious enough to poke around and figure out what each group of people are about for the tasty world building. Later on they pack a lot more action and melodrama into the MSQ, which I don't personally think is better or worse, it's different, and easier to get a full experience without needing you to go looking for story

When you get there, I feel like you'll love DSR, but yeah, HW was not great when it was current, and it almost destroyed ff14 raiding. It was definitely a learning period. Can't wait to hear your positives for Stormblood, the expansion that also gets put down.

On the toxic positivity side There are some rare toxic moments where certain players say stuff like “you pull you tank” etc but that is more of an issue with those players than the game itself(they’d be the same in any other mmo) to the point where doing that is actually against the games terms of service, and is reportable, the game itself is heavily critical of toxicity and intentional team killing(ofc if your in a small group of friends and just doing it to meme around it’s not really an issue) there’s no actual penalty in place via the game automatically, but if you report them they can get in trouble for that behaviour

I once had a pretty rough experience in a duty roulette as a new healer. The tank kept pulling way more mobs than I could handle, so I politely asked him to slow down. Instead of adjusting, he got super rude. By the time we reached the final boss, I was dying repeatedly and asked for someone to explain the mechanics. I had already mentioned at the start that it was my first time in the dungeon, but the tank just got even more annoyed. Frustrated, I finally said, "If you’re going to keep acting like this, I won’t heal you." Guess who ended up with a 24-hour ban? Me. After years of playing, that’s still the only time I’ve run into such a toxic player.
