They're telling me via email that it's a legal requirement that my gas and electric meters are replaced with a smart meter. They put the words ' ACT NOW book an appointment ' at the beginning of the mail. They don't own me, and they don't employ me, and I hate being told that I have to do something that I don't agree with.

If you google faulty smart meters, many reports come up. & there is a BBC report stating that over 1 million smart meters are currently faulty in UK. I emailed this report to OVO & they haven't bothered me since.

Octopus keep telling me that my meters are dangerous and need replacing. They are sending me emails every two weeks. I emailed them back to say I didn't want or need a smart meter, but they could fit a non smart meter. They told me, via email, they are only licensed to fit smart meters. Never heard of such a lot of clap-trap.

Told the operator this and said that until they were proved to be more reliable I wasn't interested. I'm with you on this Andy, they can stick their targets. Not had a call or email for months

On a side note, If you have a gas boiler you will still need electricity to operate the pump to pump hot water around the system.

I just ignore them. It is not law. To tell me my meter is old is a joke. It was only put in two years ago, because of a fire, had to be replaced. So expect it to work for many years. Probably longer than I have got.

My old electricity meter crashed last year, and a smart meter was my only option. I chose to have it installed in “dumb mode” only. I just read the meter on the first of every month, and send it via my phone. I can either pay online, or wait until receiving the paper bill.

When my electricity meter was close to rolling over back to zero, I was told I had to replace it with a smart meter. I ignored the email, the meter rolled over. I was billed as per normal. I still have not had one fitted. Incidentally smart meters are fitted with a large relay that can cut you off whenever your supplier chooses to do so. Think of govermental rolling power cuts, or you struggling to make a payement.

About 5 years ago I kept getting bombarded with leaflets about getting a smart meter so I thought I would get one. The engineer came out fitted it, spent an hour trying to get it to communicate with head office then took it out again & put the old meter back. Because I live near The Wash the signal ( not sure if its mobile or wifi ) was not good enough & I never heard from them again.

Well try this for size. I was going to switch gas and electricity companies a few weeks ago cos a chap was going door to door extolling the virtues of his company. I agreed to change, then a few days latet I had calls from my current supplier tring to persuade me not to leave and that I didnt have to have a smart meter if I didnt want one. Long story short, the girl cancelled my switch over on the spot. Letters arrived from company, sorry you are leaving, followed by glad your not leaving. The company i was meant to switch to have been badgering me to book an appointment for a smart meter. I dont want one,and I'm not even a customer of theirs. (Over a period of about 3 mnths)

I had a guy knock on my door from Scottish Power who said our meter was sending gobbledekook back to their headquarters. We had one installed and it goes red every time we boil a kettle. We use what we need to use but bills have went up dramatically. We were duped.

Have the calibration checked,a friend of mine had the same issue.The energy companies use third party fitters and don't always calibrate correctly.One other major issue is that they the supplier can do this remotely and can turn your individual supply off.

If 'Smart' Meters were a real benefit to the Consumer then they would be doing everything in their power to not let the Consumer have them, not be pushing and forcing Consumers to have them.

Correct. If you're on a single rate tarrif. Switching off the RTS won't make a difference. It's actually been extended. It was supposed to be March 2024. That's how they got me. Hasn't been plain sailing. Meter went faulty after 3 months and it took 4 months to get it sorted during which time I didn't pay them a penny. This month for some reason the meter didn't send a reading so they estimated my bill at twice what it should be but that was easily sorted.The smart meter has made me more savvy about usage though and reading the meter isn't straight forward but you get there in the end.

Hi Andy, I have a prepayment system for my Gas and Electric and after refusing a Smart meter installation they now tell me i wont be able charge my electric key or gas card at paypoint terminals in the near future. My wife suffered a bleed on the brain recently so the last thing i want is these brain damaging meters. Will fight it to the end!

EDF badgered us for ages. I kept refusing and eventually they said they wouldn’t contact me again. All of a sudden they are emailing me every month to send a reading. Well, I can play that game - it doesn’t take a minute to get a reading. Last week I had a text saying they’d made me an appointment to “discuss” my energy. I could either accept or decline so I declined. Now they are saying they haven’t had a reading for 4 months - but I’ve kept a note of readings and the date I sent them!

I get lots of correspondence from these people about smart meters. I don’t want one, and indeed will never have one. I would advise anyone to contact the citizens advice bureau. Or anyone in the “know”. I’m 67 and I’m sure they will try to intimidate me. But I don’t give in so easily. Do your worst tyrants!

Over four million Smart Meters in the UK are not working correctly. That means reading the meter personally and sending your own readings. I don't think that they sound very smart to me.

The readings that are transmitted from your smart meter should in theory make up your gas and electric bill. But energy suppliers can't resist interfering.just who is watching and regulating these firms.

It's all about the change of gas, as smart meters are already compatible, we have had a lot of groundwork in my area and new pipes fitted to the meter, so when North Sea gas stops being delivered sooner than later now Labour are in charge everything is in place and ready to make their £billions.

My "so called" Smart Gas meter hasn't worked properly from day 1....... Never synchronised into the Smart Hub unit...... Perhaps it is time for me to have a few words about this to my Dual Fuel supplier...... Assuming that I can actually get my call answered. Dumb meters always worked and I was coerced into..... I was tricked into having smart meters by British Gas but as u say they not too smart my display unit only displays my Gas not Electricity. And the app on my phone is vice versa u couldn't make it up 🤣 the only good thing for me being Disabled I don't have to struggle down to basement or ask my neighbours to for topping up as I can do that using the app and that happens to work 🤪🤪

Just moved into a new place, and immediately had the smart meters removed, they cannot refuse you. You only need the electric meter changed as the gas is linked to that meter.

They have been thumping cards through the door for years, I have told them I am not interested, they ignored me and carried on. They then ignored me when they decided to change my provider and I was unaware until the estimated read bill came through the door. If the cards continue I shall be charging an admin bill for each one I receive.

That sounds like a first generation smart meter SMETS1. Since the 3G signal is being shutdown and these meters use 3G then could be true.

They emailed me and my boyfriend, on the same day, that our meters had come to the end of their lives and could be dangerous/not charge us correctly. One meter is 10 years old and the other approx 30 years old. Funny that!

They’re saying my meter is 15 years old ..so what. It worked then, why can’t it work now. Sticking to my own principles. My choice, my right I always say 👍

Just before the Covid outbreak my electricity meter stopped working. When an engineer called to replace it with a Smart Meter, he couldn't get a signal. I'd explained over the phone (landline) that I had no mobile signal in the house and had to go outside to make mobile phone calls, send and receive text messages etc., so it shouldn't have been a surprise. I was told it would take a while to find a standard electricity meter but that was a problem for British Gas, not me, so I had free electricity for several months. Then Covid started and the engineer couldn't visit. That was followed by an industry strike and when that was settled priority was given to fixing faults so I continued to get free electricity. Eventually, British Gas tried a new Smart meter and that worked because the signal had improved a little by then. I'm disabled so reading the old meter was extremely difficult and I'd resorted to holding a digital camera above my head to photograph it. With the Smart Meter I have no need to take readings myself which has been very helpful. My electricity consumption is stable and only fluctuates a very little. Even in the winter I see almost no significant increase in consumption. Gas consumption varies considerably, of course. I don't worry about the ability to disconnect my electricity supply as that can be done without entering my premises so having a Smart Meter doesn't place me at any disadvantage. I'll be getting half price electricity tomorrow between 9a.m. and 5p.m. when I'll do my laundry and use the oven for cooking. As I don't use much electricity for either, I'm not going to be saving a significant amount but every little helps. The scheme lasts until 8th September.

We have been made to have a smart meter, there has been new rules made on the quiet if your electric meter is over 20 years old they can insist that it is changed and if you want another old meter then it will cost you £80,you can check your electricity meter it will have a code on it write that down and then go on line and it will tell youhow oldit is ours was 22 years old still working fine but we had the smart meter which had problems reading the gas usage but now seems to be working.

Smart metres = dirty electricity, they kept on to me about having one both gas and electricity, I said no the frequencies that come off them make me ill, so they tried to tell me that there was only a SIM card in them. I told them that they didn't know anything about smart metres, plus there is no law or legal requirement to have one, and I wasn't going to let them damage my health. What's more they can up your fuel price or switch your metre off any time they do wish to do so.

A couple of weeks ago my energy provider called on the 'phone after six months of no calls (I requested they did that six months previous). She said she's calling about installing smart meters at my address, I told her I don't want smart meters and requested to be put on the do not call list for another six months. She then proceeded to ask me to confirm the first line of my address (she ignored my request), I said "I DO NOT WANT SMART METERS" and hung up. My guess is that the time will soon come when we have no choice.

Can't add anything but I am in the same situation. The only power available is electricity via night storage and day use. I do have a gas (container) fire as supplement. I am resisting a smart meter because I have no access to the meter itself and am too far away from it to have a gadget inside which tells me what is supposed to be what. I send meter readings each month.

I've had Ovo energy on at me for the last month or so saying i owe them £8000 since 2015 until 2023 so I've told them to take me to court.Ever since i moved into my property i had the electric company at the time to put a key meter in and now i have a smart meter for the last year so where they get all this shit from i don't know

There is no requirement in law for any household to have a "Smart" meter fitted. A simple piece of research will show this to be the case. I've had all manner of threats and lies, I just tell them that I'm happy with my curtent set up. It's the same with water meters. However, it's important to know that, once you've had any of these meters fitted, you cannot reverse the arrangement....ever!

Smart meters will become compulsory at some point. There purpose is "Supply Side Energy Management" which will be necessary in our brave new world of renewable energy. It's as simple as that. Tariffs will be instantly adjustable. (Net zero is BTW unavoidable, the debate is pointless.) As are smart meters.

I've been receiving emails that claim I could win £2,000 if I install a smart meter. However, £2,000 is a trivial amount; I might consider it for £2 million. Additionally, part of my electrical system needs updating due to an old connection. I'm not certain of the specifics, but an electrician would know. I was informed that this could be done free of charge, but there's a waiting list that could take two, maybe three years. I was told this four years ago, so until that work is completed, I can't have a smart meter installed even if I wanted one.

My smart meter stopped working 8th May 2024. It was only replaced 25th July. Ofgem state ' when customers have problems with Smart Meters, it is swiftly resolved' . This obviously does not apply to So Energy. In addition I find my home is on the National Database as a business. It's time all this poor customer service stopped and CEO's concentrated on their job, not overinflated salaries.

I had one fitted years ago (when I was more gullible 😏) but when I changed supplier it became obsolete as it wasn't compatible (new enough). That was when I became more suspicious about them and have never had it 'updated'! Would love to know how to 'safely' remove it 🤔🤷

I've had calls and emails for two years now to replace my gas meter, but I won't be able to ignore their latest scheme. Apparently they will send a person to do a safety check on my gas meter - I can guess they will say it's not safe for some reason.

If you have a gas/electricity safety certificate there is nothing they can do. They will tell you these lies. If they took you to court they can only have a case if your meter is unsafe

I used to get weekly calls from my supplier EON so I barred the number , now I have had 2 letters this week already .Everything you say about the radio signal is a scam if you have access to oil or gas , everybody can refuse to have smart meters. My digital meter says it's the property of Scottish and Southern and I'm wondering if another company can steal it ?.

Don't do it. I woke up freezing and the meter is powered by electricity. If you run out of electricity how can you top up the smart meter or power it up to find out that that is indeed the problem and not a blackout.... Don't do it. Took me 3 hours to figure out how to get my supply back on. An elderly person with cognitive difficulties would be in serious trouble. -2 no heating/electric/hot water. Don't do it.

I’m concerned about why they want to control everyone’s energy. I keep have texts and calls, but I don’t want one. If you have one, what’s stopping them from cutting you off, if they don’t like your social media comments? What’s stopping them gradually increasing your usage, they said that the Post Office system was working and look what happened after all the lies. Smart meters only benefit the energy company, not you.

Gas and Electric meters do have to be changed, my house was built in 1970 and the meters were changed in the mid to late 90s, EDF keep hounding me to have smart meters
