Honestly, I can understand an author who repeats the same sentence over and over because they forgot they wrote it before. Writing something takes a lot of time and sometimes new ideas catch your attention. I don't think authors should view this as a criticism of their ability to write, but rather their ability to revise. I wonder if any reviewer of this book, whether the author or a third person, has noticed this uncomfortable repetition. I think people should pay more attention to the revising stage of a story and be more critical, as there are many books that could be better if they were revise.

I'm glad I picked up Portrait of a Thief only from the library. I was very excited to read an Asian centered heist story with social commentary but I gave up after about six chapters. I had the same problem with the author hitting us with themes over the head instead of being subtle, also repetitive phrases... And as you said, it doesn't feel like a heist story - we're just constantly in the characters' heads and in the part I read nothing actually happens and when it does it doesn't feel impactful. So sad because the premise sounded amazing.

Cindy you're such a badass, don't let those writers get to you. Like yeah, putting your work out there is a really raw and difficult experience, obviously. But discussions and disagreements are gonna happen. The writer just needs to filter what's actually beneficial and constructive to their writing. Like maybe have a friend go through some reviews first and show them only the helpful ones if they can't handle seeing negative or neutral feedback, which I think is fine and relatable. Weird, lmao. But anyway, loved seeing a cooking video again, and I totally guessed that u were going to talk about Portrait of A Thief✨🥳
