The emotional trauma both Francesca and Michael had to overcome to finally get together was really amazing to see unfold (I love how Julia Quinn can write these slowly unfolding relationships). Also YES, the scenes with Colin and all the brothers in general were so enjoyable.

I didn’t really make any connection between Penelope’s weight loss and Colin falling in love with her. I was talking about her weight loss in general and how it’s portrayed. I read 6 of the books some years ago (in order ) and I am now rereading them after watching the second season. I love what Netflix did with the books and how they changed them for the better, especially in the 2nd season ( which I loved and watched twice !). I can’t wait for the next season. I also want to read the last two books. My favorite and least favorite books are very different from yours though. I really liked Eloises book for example. I don’t agree AT ALL about Sir Philip and the description of depression. Did we even read the same book 😅 In an age where people did not know about depression the way he dealt with his wife is relatable and makes total sense to me. Even just a couple of decades ago depression wasn’t considered an illness or not taken seriously by most people. This is all quite new. Also he married her out of duty not love and did what he could to make her comfortable. I know from experience how hard it is to deal with people who have depression. It always feels like there is just nothing you can do to make them feel better. Depression doesn’t only affect the person but also always anyone around them. And that’s what Julia Quinn describes well. To call him a ‚vile‘ person is so harsh and not at all true. So I encourage every one to read Eloise’s book and make up their own mind.

Sorry, Allie! I disagree with much of your ratings and assessments of the later books. I really, really like “To Sir Phillip, With Love” and I think some of your interpretations of what occurred in that book simply weren’t accurate. He was a floored hero, yes, but he simply didn’t do most of what you accused him of. And as for the epilogues all being light and fluffy? Francesca deals with the pain of infertility and Lucy almost dies in childbirth! However, life would be boring if we all viewed art through the same lens and differing opinions can be interesting to consider….thought provoking. Shall we agree to disagree?

He didn't rape his first wife! He tried for intimacy after the birth of the twins and, although she at no point refused him, she lay like a log. Kindhearted man that he is, he respected her enough to not approach her again yet remained loyal to his marriage by being celibate for 8 years. How many men would do that? You've completely and wrongly misjudged Philip. Who knew about post-partum depression in the 1800s? And, to be fair, Eloise said that her cousin was always miserable in personality - even before ths children were born. Eloise's story is lovely and he's one of my favourite Bridgerton heroes.

I feel like concern for mental health is a more recent thought. Idk just an insight. Like I thought it was so crazy how manic Anthony was about bees and dying at 35. I still can't comprehend it. I really like the adaptation, honestly. I think it feels almost like historical fantasy at this point, and it’s a lot of fun. I also love the way they’ve cast the show 😊 I would say that’s probably true, but her books are such a weird blend of historical sensibilities and modern sensibilities, I’d rather it be consistent. And tbh I probably wouldn’t have had as much of an issue with the depiction of depression if Phillip hadn’t been such an ass. Like Eloise wasn’t so understanding, but at least she was nice about it lol I’m kind of surprised they didn’t include Anthony’s obsession with his father’s death in the show. Makes me wonder if it’ll be mentioned more in the second season or if they’re just going to gloss over it.

By now series 2 is out. Say what you will, it definitely did not follow the book and left out some things that built the relationship. I was so disappointed but then I started loving it for what it was, it was the series. So the series is definitely different from the books and need to be treated as such. I am with you on Eloise's book. She definitely deserved better. But book Eloise and show Eloise are not the same. There were some things I disagree with you on but I think it is just the difference in our generations. Since time began for historical romance, way back, men characters have always been the way they are. The women in the story usually changes how they see women when they fall in love with them or in their marriage, they change. I have spent over forty years reading these type of books. Believe me, they ain't gonna change. We aren't gonna suddenly have 2022 social mores in 1700s England. There's a formula to these books and it works. Very well. It's a crap shoot for what will happen in the Netflix series. We know they will depart from the books. The characters and feeling of the show is very different. And I say it is nice to see the queen being part of the cast. I am looking forward to Pen and Colin's love story next.
@alliewithbooks

I think it’s less of a generational thing and more of a just me thing when it comes to anachronistic historical fiction 😅 I usually stand alone in enjoying historical fiction with more modern sensibilities (though as someone who loves studying history and has for years I hesitate to call all “modern sensibilities” solely “modern” as there were plenty of people throughout history with what we would now call “modern sensibilities”, anyway that’s a tangent). But I do agree that there are just certain tropes, good and bad, that come with the territory of historical romance, especially historical romance from even just 10+ years ago. I was also disappointed by some of the major changes they made in regards to season two. I loved the season for what it was, but I think it could’ve been even better if it stuck closer to the book. There were so many scenes I wish we could’ve seen, but I’m not totally unsatisfied. I think it all worked out in the end. I’m SO EXCITED for Pen and Colin’s season!! No one can dampen that excitement for me 😊 glad you’re excited as well!
