Honestly, I would say the Crescent City books by Sarah J Mass are worth a shot. There are adult themes and things going on in the books, as she is well known for. But it is actually handled well, fits into the plot, and doesn't overstay its welcome so far. The story is interesting, and it has some downright action-packed and brutal moments in it that are awesome. However, take all this with a grain of salt. As I learned with this author, she can turn everything on its head and not in a good way, and there are only 2 of the five book series out at the moment.

@@sk4348 i actually prefer fantasy romance myself, (tho not interested in any of the popular series) but hate that it is mixed with with regular fantasy because they are so night and day. the bookstores aren't even consistent about it, like stuff like fourth wing and acotar is in fantasy while similar stuff such as plated prisoner and fbaa are in romance. which means if the reader wants similar stories you have to look in both sections and its really hard trying to navigate the fantasy section because its not romance. i think it would be good for both readers to separate the two so readers get what they want more easily.

Literary would be shelved in general fiction here. But romance would basically include smut, erotica and regular romance stuff you see in regency and contemporary. There is also paranormal but fantasy romance has started to replace that. It just needs to be better understood bc adult fantasy should be for books that focus on fantasy elements first. General rule of thumb is if you can remove the romance and still have a story then it’s not romance. If the story falls apart it’s romance first most.

The thing the botters me the most about those "romantasy" books is that they read like YA, in both the writing and the more superficial exploration of themes, and at the same time posess A LOT of gore and sexual content. It causes confusion, since it feels like the writters dont really know for whom they writting for, teens or adults. I loved your video tho 😂 your reaction was so funny

I think when you say "it reads like YA", you are probably referring to the fact that it has... subpar writing. Which is often the case for 90% of the books published in the YA genre. However, the issue comes when these subpar writers are also horny adults who are eager to write smut and 'adult' themes. So they go ahead and write these books, but because their writing capabilities are nowhere near actual literary authors, they just shoehorn it into the YA section where they know it will be accepted. Hence, there's no real audience they are writing it for. It's just their own smut fantasies vomited out on a page. Now, I'm not saying that ALL YA books are subpar. It is just that in the last few decades the genre has become so inundated with mediocrity that people don't even question it anymore.

There is a warning in the book telling you what it contains and the front cover isn’t subtle so the publisher or author cant be blamed on this one. The book community as a whole needs to stop listing books as YA just because there is romance or because it is written with a female audience in mind. I'm only 2.5 minutes in and the amount of times he called Fourth Wing YA already has me screaming. Don't get me wrong, I found Fourth Wing mediocre at best but IT ISN'T YA!!!! It is adult fantasy. It's not good fantasy but it is adult. Same with Sarah J Maas's books in his last video that was called YA multiple times. While both A Court of Thorns and Roses and Throne of Glass started in the YA section, they are no longer considered YA and both are now listed as adult fantasy. Sarah J Maas's other book series, Crescent City, was released as adult fantasy. The reason this gets me riled up is because YA typically is marketed to maybe around 12/13 year olds to 18-25 year olds, maybe even some older people. There are scenes in these books that I personally wouldn't be comfortable out right marketing to 12/13 year olds. Sure, they can get their hands on these books and can even read worse online but it's different if these books are being out right marketed to them. Especially if there are scenes or themes that they might not be ready to come across. The same themes are out there in age appropriate texts. I don't believe in banning books and believe anyone should read whatever they like as long as they are aware before hand what it is they are reading. Just because a book is fantasy with a heavy emphasis on romance, written by a woman, and is marketed largely to a female audience doesn't automatically make the book YA or somehow less than other fantasy works.

The part about their dragons being horny is actually so… minimal? It’s talked about so much in this video that it sounds like it’s recurrent or super important but it’s not. It’s a single scene from the MCs POV who happens to be feeling what they’re feeling, but the scene is focused on HER, not on the dragons. It is weird to sexualize dragons and I did find it weird to read, but about the dragons themselves, it’s very minimal! I think it’s a bit blown out of proportion in this video, tbh!

The bond isn’t that she’s horny because her dragon is horny-the bond in the beginning makes it hard to differentiate her feelings from her dragons. This emotional leakage, you could call it, is important-because the narrator tells us that dragon bonds become stronger each time a dragon bonds. The theory is also that Violet and Xaden’s dragons being bonded leads to the likelihood that they are fated mates as well. The plot is actually super interesting. The potential directions the plot can go are what make this book what it is. Romantasy isn’t for everyone. 😂

It begans so good (well, I could live with less whinning about how weak the MC is) the story has good potential, there was the dragons bonding magic mystery... then screeching halt to the action... I hope to give it more than 3 stars but...

the worst part about this book was that the book without the screwing dragons and obsessed humans was awesome imo, she wrote a good book and added sex into it for no reason, I am 36 years old and was listening to the audiobook while playing BG3 and got embarrassed for the writer a couple times lol

Yes. It would have been better without the explicit sex. Also, I think that if a male author had a male character speaking about a girl the way Violet talks about Xaden, it would be heavily criticized if even published at all.

I think your conclusions are totally fair! I enjoyed Fourth Wing but I liked the first half a lot better for the same reasons as you. I'm more of an Epic Fantasy reader than a Romance Fantasy reader myself. I'd love to hear what your wife thinks of it XD

I loved this style of video! - I've definitely dnf'd books where the smut gets to much. As a Christian myself, I just don't want to read that sort of stuff. It's meant to be kept between you, your spouse & God. If you're looking for Christian sci-fi/fantasy, I highly recommend Ted Dekker's Circle series as well as his book with Frank Peretti; House. It's more horror but as I know you've entioned you've read Stephen King, you'll be fine. God bless & keep up the good work 💙

Great video! I'm reading Jade City and i was not expecting the very detailed sex scene (Hilo&Wen) especially not in the first 50 pages. I'm still liking the book and will most likely read the rest of the trilogy but it just gave me strong smut fan fic vibes and I haven't been able to take it as seriously as i'd like despite reading over 200 more pages since.

I felt the same way! I DO NOT want or need smut or religion in my fantasy . HOWEVER, Joe Abercrombie does the odd bit here and there so well and with humour!

@@tanja9364 I still haven't read any of hiss books. the first law is on my list though! i don't mind religion when its part of the worlds lore, Sanderson has different religions in both Mistborn and Stormlight and i think they add a lot to the world-building and the story

I haven't read this book and I think I wouldn't like it either (magic shools, dragons and horny triangles are tropes I don't value much in general). However, I find quite distracting that you avoid so much using normal words like "sex", or "horny". I think it becomes detrimental for this review, because you end looking overly prudish and partial, instead of serious and objective as usual.

This is how I felt about book 1 the Bound and the Broken. It felt like AI had mashed together Eragon, Magician and WOT and thrown in plot craters and zero ability to write females. Petrik assured me book 2 is a huge step up, and most give book 2 a 4 star rating. So I am confused at the huge rating book 1 gets ?? The hype is enormous round this series. However I do note main KZitemrs are avoiding rating book 1 on its own, always pairing it with a later novella. Probably the worst book I have read in years on prose, plot, characters and complete lack of anything original, but it’s a YT darling. So seeing Fourth Wing get similar hype I have avoided Fourth Wing 😊. It’s as if the hype blocks most from giving a serious review in case the fans go for them. Most fun dragon bond find this year is the SPFBO 9 The Blood-born Dragon by JC Rycroft. Squid is just adorable, and Des not your standard “heroine” very engaging and easy to read. I finished it and just wanted more so grabbed the prequel novella A Hired Blade, also great ❤

if you're looking for Christian sci fi and fantasy I'd recommend: Brother Wolf by Eleanor Bourg Nicholson - Christian take on werewolf stories A Bloody Habit by Eleanor Bourg Nicholson - Christian take on vampires Eifelheim by Michael Flynn - first contact story in Middle Ages Germany A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter Miller Jr - Catholic monastery in the aftermath of World War 3 And Tim Powers' work in general has a Christian undercurrent but especially in his novel Declare. Though his work does lean towards historical fiction than just fantasy.

Fourth Wing made me genuinely surprised to learn Rebecca Yarros has a partner and a family after reading so much about how much Violet, sorry I should say Violence, likes to suck on tongues. Yarros's depictions read more like a sexually frustrated teenage girl's sprawling on what she thinks sex is like.

in the dragon classic by Anne McCaffrey Dragonflight, which is not a romance book at all, there are dragon riders : men bonded to male dragons and female bonded to the Dragon Queen, and there is also the same idea : dragons have sex and the male-female dragon riders as well. Book written in 1991. Not at all a romance story, the union wasn't romantic between humans so ... embarassing. And that is how the author describer that - as weird. The most classic dragon writer of the classic canon. So thing is as old as the hills. Also, I'm afraid the reality is a lot, I mean a loooot of readers (both sexes) is used to that "abs" & such vibes in fantasy books.

It is just Twilight 2.0, big media repercusion and publisized under the fantasy tag, may be good or an ok romance novel but also a terrible as a fantasy novel because as i said they use fantasy as the bait not as the main focus of the story.

Wish there was more focus on the human-dragon relationship, like, sometimes there are whole chapters in which there is practically NO dialogue with dragons...
