I can't believe I'm about to defend SJM, but the stair thing actually does make sense. As a long distance hiker I have learned the hard way that going down for too long if you are not trained for it can be incredibly painful, because it destroys your quads and then your knees pay the price. Going up actually feels good after that, because it uses different muscles. Yes it's more demanding cardio-wise but you can go up slowly and it is less impact on your muscles. I am not sure SJM has actually thought that through, but I could relate to that part very well, haha

I started reading acotar back in 2015 when I came across your channel for the first time. I absolutely loved those! I remember being so excited for this release after having waited so long for something to come out and as Throne of Glass was finishing up (I read the books as they were published alongside your reviews) When I read it, I was glued to it and very shocked at her writing (smut). Very conflicted as well after reading, whether I liked it or not. I felt like it was very overwhelming and took away from Nesta’s redemption arc. But also at the same time, they (Nesta and Cassian) had been so worked up over the course of the original books that instead of giving us a little bit here and there and being sweet/sensitive about their connection (showing each other softness when Nesta is a hardass and Cassian is private) she’s practically just shoving it down our throats and it didn’t feel like, I as the reader, could connect with their story. I feel like it having been a couple of years since having read this, I’d most definitely say it’s not the best out of her writing. If I’m asked for a Sjm recommendation, hands down Throne of Glass over everything.

Absolutely hated this book in the series, I loved Nesta but ended up feeling negative about the main ACOTAR cast which sort of ruined the original trilogy and makes me less excited about crescent city 3? SJM is missing good editing in her latest books, because publishers know people will buy and read it no matter what, her books end up way too long and the plot is not as tightened up. This book reads like a first draft, it should've been 400 pages max and the sore character work and plot holes ironed out. I'm also split on the emotional journey, like SJM googled healthy coping mechanisms but never thought to write therapy into her world building. Just make friendship bracelets and do breathing exercises guys. /s

For YEARS I’ve felt insane cause no one has talked about the absolute violation of boundaries and autonomy in this book and I’m over here like “hello? 100% agree with everything you’ve said in this vlog! Loved the main plot but didn’t feel there was any chemistry between Nesta and Cassian 🤷🏼♀️

The first time I read this book I also thought it was a LOT and kinda out of nowhere. I’m currently rereading the series and coming fresh off of ACOWAR Nesta and Cassian’s storyline makes a little more sense to me. I feel like a lot of their initial getting-to-know-you happened off the page in previous books. I picked up on it more in my reread since I knew what was going to happen/what to look for. Still not my favorite SJM book, but I like it more the second time around 😅

This book is so insanely bad it’s almost comic. Like it’s just such a mess. Rhysand and Feyre also really had me on my last leg in this book, Rhys especially they were at their worst 😭.

I think we need to stop using the term ‘bad’… books are so subjective - it’s not a ‘bad’ book, you just didn’t enjoy it/the writing (which is obviously fine), but using ‘insanely bad’ just puts others down for enjoying it.

@@L1lijan No the book is bad. There is an object truth to that, her sentences are poorly rendered, her characters lack the proper depth for the narrative she is trying to tell, the plotting and pacing suffer from a genuine lack of direction. If YOU feel bad because of that the onus is on you. The book is bad by nearly every metric. That’s fine. You can enjoy it, I, like everyone enjoy things that have genuine structural and compositional issues. Tying your own worth to what someone feels about or the critiques made of something is an issue you’d need to work out personally, because that’s a bit alarming.

Firstly, I was just saying that maybe we could come up with a different adjective to ‘bad’, so no need to compose an essay. Everything you’ve listed about the book is once again, subjective - I personally disagree with the characters ‘lacking proper depth’, but once again we’ve all got our own opinions. No need to be ‘alarmed’ by my comment 😊

@@dreferre21i just think you're being mean for no reason and the other user made a valid point. there's no "objective truth" or "metrics" in art and i think an issue YOU need to work on is needing to push down other people to make yourself seem smarter or more knowledgeable on a topic. if you didn't like the book you can just move on

I kinda think that just because you're getting one trope doesn't mean you'd get another one as well for X Y Z reasons but miscommunication is a craptastic thing in books and slow burn and the build up omg need more

I think Nesta may have weak knees! XD Because if you have weak knees, going down can actually be more painful. I know the pain firsthand as my left knee is very sensitive and going down when trekking in the mountains can be tough.

obsessed with your red hair 🍒🧣 it’s wild to me how hit or miss SJM is for me! ToG is one of my favorite series but ACOTAR wasn’t for me. the books read like a 500+ page unedited brain dump of fantasy concepts with an emphasis on smut rather than intentional or expansive storytelling. many book girlies enjoy that so I respect the niche it serves but its not for me! as you said, I love slow burn and need to FEEL the chemistry between characters to feel the stakes of the tension and enjoy the intimacy (emotional and physical!) that much more.

Petition to buy Azriel a house. 😆 First of all, thank you for a hilarious video. You have captured, on screen, the essence of reading SJM's books. I think the general opinion of Maas's books lately is that they are just way too long. I don't know what happened to her editor, but somebody needs to cut down the material. Another thing is the weird "character-plot twists" where we really start to hate characters we used to like. I absolutely hated the entire subplot of Feyre's pregnancy and genuinely think it's not really in line with the character who wanted to see the world and be a high lady to suddenly decide to have kids - immediately - and kind of lose all of her other ambitions and goals. Nesta and Cassian's romance was weak. You are completely right - there was no substance to it and it was difficult to root for them. Still, Nesta remains one of my favourite characters. All in all - cannot wait to see you read next books in ACOTAR series😉

I liked the first 3 ACOTAR books but had to force myself to wade through Frost and Starlight which was a complete waste of time and I eventually dnf’d Silver Flames about half way through. Needless to say I won’t be bothering to read any more of this series.

I just reread the entire series because I too had never picked up acosf and I waited to watch this video until now as a I finished the book last night. I agree so much with what you’re saying and I also realized with this reread, that it seems like all of her books have so much going on in the last 100 pages that seemingly make it feel like the book was worth reading, but were they ever worth reading just for the last 100 pages?
