I just watched a Montana historical society lecture on Mary Maclane. I have been in Butte many times over the years and thought it's only exports were Copper and Evil Knievel. Mary Maclane is a person I need to find out more about and somehow I lit upon your channel. Your enthusiastic description and assessment is why I suspect her book sold 100,000 copies when first published.. Thank you

i appreciate the review. im older, 55, and can remember when my mom couldnt get a loan from the bank without my dads authorization. at ten, i clearly understood it was oppression and mom and i talked about it. -in the 1800s women, including susan b. anthony, fought for womens rights. organizations such as nwsa and awsa merged with the National American Woman Suffrage Association to strengthen the fight for womens rights. you mentioned the book was written a hundred years ago so mary was in the middle of mix of women finally getting mad enough to build the courage to fight for their rights and freedom of oppression. i can only imagine her fury.

Thanks :^) glad you liked it. it's crazy how recently a lot of what seem like very basic rights for women have been won!

Hello, @fictionesque! :) I stumbled on Mary MacLane in the chapter dedicated to her by Per Faxneld, in his PhD thesis "Satanic feminism". Probably you know about this book, it provides a lot of context for the times Mary MacLane lived in and what could have inspired her. And her cultural impact is also developed there. (and the description of steak and olive can be read as a very subversive stance if compared to the eating manners inculcated to women of the time...) Thanks for this genuine and honest review of this text which in its time was an inspiration for young girls who felt that women can and ought to be allowed a wider spectrum of choices and perspectives in life.
