I really appreciated this video. For about three years I have been waiting for someone to make a smart watch that you could use solo as your cellular device. Mostly I want to do some digital detox but also I am not excited about any new phones. I’m still rocking an iPhone 8 plus with no intention to upgrade phones any time soon. I like seeing other people’s attempts at running with smart watch only. This gave me some new information that makes me think I could go this route in the future. The fact that watches are only seen as add-ons makes me think a watch only eco system isn’t on the minds of major developers in the industry.

I have been thinking about the qr code and camera limitations a watch has, but what alot of watches and phones do have is Nfc. It came to mind when I was doing a workout on a Stairmaster step machine and you could link your smartwatch to it using nfc by tapping it. I think an nfc tag is even more intuitive for most people, just tap your phone and it pops open, instead of having a hassle with the camera and some qr codes not being recognised etc...

First, without watching the video: I asked to do a video like this around 6 months ago when Apple watch 6 was just launched & I was debating to ditch my phone altogether for this. But my research that time told me that it’s not possible, mainly due to poor battery life on cell service + connected to AirPods while taking calls, max battery life was 2 hrs on call, which I have to attend a lot. So I decided to wait till a smartwatch comes with atleast 12 hr of battery life on call to complete a whole day w/o worrying about running out of battery. Now back to watching the video. Cheers Brien, keep up the good work!

Great video, thank you. I would say though that although I kinda agree on the conclusion, the reasons are only valid for Apple. For Android, there are planty of smart watches which are actually better as solo smart phones. For example, the kospet optimus 2. My wife has completely moved to that smartwatch as the main phone and it is kinda perfect for (I would say) 80% of the use cases. The main issue with this (except for it being klanky and big with small screen) are apps that can't handle some screen ratios, like square for example (and the lack of nfc 😔)

This is a good exercise of imagining the future. However, there is an alternative to what you are experimenting. The way I look at it, is similar to what history has taught us. Laptop cannot replace desktop, no matter what producers throw inside the laptops. So, network connected smartwatch will replace the connectivity section of smartphone: the calls, the video chat, network connection. The bar-shaped smartphone will be phasing out and extinct later on, and tablet PC will replace them. With the screen folding technology maturing, people will bring a folded tablet of 7" - 11" to replace smartphone. Think of it this way: bigger-stronger processor, more works can be done in PC, bigger screen means more effective work/play time spent, bigger storage, flexible connection tethering to smartwatch, a lot better entertainment, and so on. I believe, we still bring a portable computer around in the near future, but instead of smartphone we'll bring around a light-weight, folded tablet PC tethered to smartwatch that has network connection. This is far more feasible in the near future.

Thanks for making this video. I was thinking of replacing my iPhone with an Apple Watch Series 8 41mm. The mobility of the Apple Watch Series 8 with the Productivity of the iPad mini 6. Is an incredible combo in my opinion. The Apple Watch Series 8 definitely seems to be able to replace at minimum a dumb phone. I make 1-2 calls a day, send 1-2 messages (via iMessage), use Apple Pay, check bank balances, and may use google maps (on occasion). So it may work for me. But I totally understand why someone may still choose to have an iPhone 14 pro because of the cameras, many apps you can use, and the battery life

the thing is in my country ( India ) we don't have to pay extra amount to get LTE services on apple watch. I have considered the Apple watch, but I always have pockets when I go outside to exercise and my iPhone 7 is not a hassle at all to take with me. Plus, I feel really uncomfortable with the idea of replying to texts with my voice in public, as those conversations are private and walking down the street on your phone is a jerk move. I could wait until I get home to reply, but I can also simply pull out my iPhone (after looking around to make sure it's safe) and quietly type a quick response. Maybe one day, when the Apple watch is better, I might be interested, but for now... it's just not compelling enough to buy one more device that comes with planned obsolescence. Great vid!

I have only two problems, battery life, lack of camera and reliance on iPhone. I don’t have a iPhone, and I want an Apple Watch to send texts and call, play maybe some quick games while waiting, scan QR codes and stuff, actually set it up (IPhone is needed, though I could use a family members), use GPS and maps, fitness stuff such as heart rate, workout stuff, etc.., and use siri. Alongside this I have a few questions. After I set up an Apple Watch (that has cellular) with my moms iPhone, will I need a iPhone at all for anything in the future (I know I will but I’m curious as to what), and can I do all the stuff I want mentioned above without a iPhone. I have an iPad, and so battery isn’t a super big issue. Battery won’t be a big issue, as I’ll mainly only want to send messages and call, maybe use a little google, use GPS and maps, do exercise / fitness stuff including heart rate, etc.., can I do all that without an iPhone?

My biggest complaint with so many devices of different formfactors at disposal is that it really blurs the line between themselves for the same set of use cases. If you think, you only need a smartwatch (LTE), a tablet and a wireless headset to go through everything you deal on a day to day basis. About clicking pictures though, tablets can do that but I really don't think it's that user-friendly.

Many of these “limitations” you’ve mentioned are not limitations at all. Annoyances but not limitations. Let me tell you what the true limitations are. $530 for a cellular watch. $70 activation fee, and a separate phone number. $10 a month. Calls frequently drop or can’t be made at all, despite being in an area of full bars. Siri likewise is not consistently reliable on cellular. You’ll lose most of your battery life making just four calls and sending twenty texts. Cellular might not work as well in buildings versus your phone. Turning off cellular antennas doesn’t guarantee you’ll save battery life. Your apps may not work at all without access to cellular if your out of range of Wi-Fi or your iPhone. The watch can get hot from extended use of the cellular antenna system. Longer phone calls could be dropped if you run out of battery life.

This only works if you're totally gonna replace your phone. Otherwise, it's a worthless investment only a few people can afford. People would rather buy a new phone for that price (not to mention the headache of upgrading the watch every few years and the deplorable battery issue). And unless you're in charge of a country's nuclear launch codes, you can actually leave the phone at home without incident. A lot of people do that and they work out alright. You really don't need the smartwatch at all. Only for people with excess money problems.

A watch popup cam would be really cool if you could make it small enough

It’s like you said,,the smart watch is good for a walk/run with EarPods and listen to music until you get back home,,thanks man.

Standard SMS is not received and the watch face (complications) stop updating, when iPhone is off. This was a bummer for me (forgetting to put iPhone on a charger). Also the voice mail box is not functional with some carriers/countries - a big no no for me. Carriers here are also not helpful with AW.

Thats a very cool test. I am a diabetic. The App that measures my blood sugar is installes on my iPhone and also on my Watch. The problem is that the app from the apple watch only works with the app from iPhone. That is why i have to have my phone with me in any situation.

Great video, I like the scenario based videos. I still aspire to the scenario you do here on the Android side. Do you think smart glasses like a modern Google glass would be a better phone replacement tech. Floating directions and interface, camera in the frames ?

So, do I understand it correctly that you *must have* some phone somewhere with your phone number and a line with a provider?

You failed to mention you still have to actually have a phone to setup and use a smartwatch. This is a huge problem and defeats the entire purpose, at least it does for me. I’ve been trying to get by with only a smartwatch for a good 3-4 years
