This happened to my most beloved record... I was playing The Pale Empreror's Deluxe Vinyl Edition, which I found after some months of trying to get a mint copy of it. So I went home and decided to play it, placed the rercord, took all dust away from it, and I was about to drop the needle when my mom walked into my room in a hurry and accidentally hit the desk, which made me freak out and drop the needle on the record at 2-2,5 centimiters away from it... I just stood there as the music started playing, and decided to drop the needle on the 1st track, one I got to track 2, y hear this loud af pop, that was continuously repeating itself over and over again... That is my favourite record ever, pressed on gorgeous 180g white vinyl, just getting absolutely wrecked... I was dead inside for 2 or 3 hours after that.

One of the many reasons why a lot of people like automatic record players rather than manual ones is the potential human error in handling that tonearm. I think this scenario has all happened to us at one point or another if you have a player with a manual tonearm.

Sometimes I play records during home parties. And sometimes at these moments I get a little drunk. One day, when I just decided to listen to one of my favorite and rare records, I found a huge scratch on it along all the tracks on the side A. Apparently, I made this scratch myself when I was drunk at one of these parties. Thank God, the scratch did not affect the sound in any way, but I was still in shock. My advice - never play your records when you drunk.

Song of the day Strawberry Fields Forever - The Beatles And also the worst damage I’ve ever seen happen to one of my beloved records was when I ordered one online, usually this works great for me because I only get records online if they come from a real record store because they know how to handle them, so I picked The Beatles yellow submarine soundtrack (sealed) and had it delivered in about a week and then it happened... The record was completely warped! I could immediately tell from the packaging because one side was bent upward and when I opened the package and took a close look at the record itself one whole side was completely warped and misshaped. I got a replacement and I just hung the old one on my wall for show because even though it was ruined I still spent money on it and I just felt like I could not throw it away.

“Track three was kaputt.”😅 I’m very pleased to hear German words in an English sentence, very nice. Ja, fortunately most of the superficial scratches are barely audible, but your misfortune is deeply shocking! Sometimes it’s better to have an automatic turntable additionally, as you are with friends and can’t handle your records with care as you normally would do. Greetings from 🇩🇪
@taida8511

German here as well. I just recently learned that "kaputt" is actually more common in the English language than you might be aware of. Sure it's not used as frequently as words like "broken" or "damaged" but I have heard it being used in English sentences quite a few times now. It seems like "kaputt" is used as a more comedic replacement for the other more common synonymes. And I also believe that it is used if something is very badly damaged. Like even more than "wrecked" or "destroyed". I was just as surprised the first time I've heard it.

Here’s my story. So my mum knew that I really wanted a turntable, and saved up to buy me my first record player, which was a really good, brand new AT-LP7. I fell in love with it. Unfortunately a couple months later I clumsily dropped the dust cover onto the tone arm, which caused the tone arm to skim over the platter, damaging the stylus, and creating multiple chips in the smooth matte black surface of the turn table base. I was so gutted, that I couldn’t look at my turntable for a month. To this day, every time I spin a record I beat myself up about it. But I eventually moved on, and I regained my love for it. Now every time I move the dust cover I’m extremely cautious. Well I guess I learnt my lesson, and will never make that mistake again!

Modern turntables usually come with a 'locking clip' to hold the tone-arm in place. It's good practice to get in the habit of always using the clip every time you want to flip or change a record and only open it when you're ready to put the needle down to play. Cue-up levers can be fixed/adjusted. There's usually a screw in the middle of the banana-shaped thing under the tone arm that you can adjust to where you like it.

I find when I use the cueing lever on my Rega RP-1, the tonearm always drifts off from where I placed it as it lowers. It's literally just so much easier to be careful and precise doing it manually. I still use it for taking the needle off again. Nothing disastrous has happened yet. My worse mishap was when I dropped an inexpensive, very common 90s house 12" and it bounced against the sharp corner of the table my turntable was sat on. A similarly painful experience, and left some noticeable marks, but absolutely no damage to the audio. I'm just very lucky I guess.

I had also built this thing to go over my TT so that it's fully protected from my cats. At this time, my cats were pretty hyper and running around so, just as you were, I was in a hurry. I always use the antistatic brush before playing so I move the tonearm over the record not realizing I hadn't lifted the cue-up. So I moved it over dropping it right onto the record and it bounced twice. Just "Pop" "Pop" right out of the speakers. I felt my stomach drop. THANKFULLY my record is fine! And the new set-up sounds great. I _almost_ scratched a record. I had "The Day Is My Enemy" by The Prodigy and played it on a cheap turntable. It took me 5 mins to realise it was looping - I thought it had a scratch so I bought a replacement. A few months later, my dad found an old, automatic record player in the loft and said I could have it. The counterweight was broken and the start/stop button would stick (EDIT: The queue up lever fell out, so there was no way for me to manually drop the needle onto the record). I put my "scratched" record onto it and hit the start button. The needle dropped and scraped right across the record making a horrible noise as it did so. I could see a visible spiral scratch along the whole length of the album. A few months after that, I bought a new turntable (An AT-LP120XUSB) and played the same "scratched" record. It played perfectly. I now have two copies of an awesome album.

Released every single and they’ve edited their songs for an album called Buckled which I have that makes it 14 releases. On ELC 006 Side A has a permanent marker that is way old that didn’t come off and it smudged the label... which made me horrified... and what’s worse on In Rock EP’s Side B, Wonderbra has some scratches and pops in the beginning and the rest to the middle same for Live In Frankfurt has it on the beginning as well. I might find a replacement for that release, maybe they might put all the songs on a CD format with the 12” inch as well! Which my favorite song of the day is Cow by The Jeep Grrlz.

I was cleaning records on my Kirmuss record cleaner and drying them off with lint free optical fiber towel however my fingernail slightly was exposed and I put a 2inch scratch in a 400usd album. My heart stopped for a second or two and felt sick to my stomach. :( now I wear a special fiber glove when drying my albums. First time I’ve damaged a record in about a decade :(

Well, i have an automatic Technics turntable, so something like this can't happen, but i have a few janky italian 45s where the lead-in groove part isn't wide enough, so the needle slipped down to the mat. I also slipped a record after cleaning right onto the corner of my PC. The scratch looks ugly, but it's inaudible, because it was a 12" maxi-single where the grooves are deeper and thicker.

I remember i went to a record store and found an extremely well preserved US 1st Pressing of Let it Be. I played it on the store’s turn table, but the store didnt have a lever to lift the stylus up. When I was finished listening, I tried lifting the lever up. I am a naturally shaky person, and so the stylus ended up slipping. The stylus made a fresh, clean “ZIIIP” sound and I watched a new, fresh white scratch form as it went from the last track to the run out. I was extremely shocked that nobody heard it, so I immediately put it back like it was nothing. I dont know if anyone knows about it to this day, besides the unfortunate lad who probably bought it with the scratch there not knowing he could’ve gotten it a week earlier when it was still scratch free.

Even this cautionary tale demonstrates how much more personal the experience of physical media can be...you’d never remember the WiFi cutting out during a download, but I’ll bet you remember this accident every time you hear track 3 from now on haha! Glad it was ok in the end!

1) How are you sure that the stylus is not damaged? You might have changed the azimuth a little, judging from that scratch... 2) I have seen some vinyl tips from Henry Rollins and he recommended to lower the que arm when it rests- I would rather replace my que-lifter than replace my record or stylus...

I got a mint copy of The Jazz Messengers “A Night in Tunisia” and listened to it while enjoying a glass or two of bourbon. I got up to flip the record and dropped it. My guitar put a big scratch right across side 2. Ouch. The scratch looks bad but sound wise it’s not terrible...I was kind of lucky.

I feel so bad for you, but I also understand your pain! I was playing my "An evening with Belafonte / Mouskouri" record and I accidentally dropped the tonearm instead of slowly putting it down which scratched it sadly, it pops and cracks slightly at one of the songs. I plan on ordering a replacement.

a few weeks ago i was trying out my new record of room on fire by the strokes on my brothers turntable since i am upgrading to one with the same stylis and wanted to hear what it sounded like, when i dropped the needle with the level i was horrified when it dropped at maximum speed toward it instead of slowly lowering it. it jumped and skidded across track 2. it left one extremely large surface level scratch mark and one small deep scratch, but I was insanely lucky that the deep scratch was during the loudest part of the song so when i played over it i couldn't even hear the scratch being played on through the speakers. super lucky but now i am VERY careful of tonearm levers

One time I accidentally took the entire record stylus off of my turntable trying to take the cover off. Didn’t notice and then went to play one of my records. AAAAAAAAAA Thankfully it didn’t even scratch it or anything surprisingly

This exact deer in headlights moment happened to me about a month ago. When I was placing the needle on DSOTM, my hand slipped, and the needle scratched the whole side 2 of the record. Luckily, it doesn’t sound too bad.

I done something similar recently. I was standing over my turntable and I’ve taken out a record from its inner sleeve, the record slipped out of my hand and hit the slip mat, then my needle.......blowing my amp and speakers. Thankfully I had got the amp and speakers from a charity shop, but still not a good thing to happen. My wife told me to buy a new set up and upgrade at the same time. From now on I will be keeping the needle protector on until a record is sitting on the turntable.👍

Yes. A visible scratch across a track of my MFSL Pink Floyd DSotMoon album. Luckily it is totally undetectable in playback.

Being impatient on showing a friend a good record Is a huuuge mistake. I’ve done that. It didn’t go as bad as your accident (sorry for that!) but a Dream Theater’s limited edition album and my stylus were in danger.

Everyone makes a boo boo at some point if you're into vinyl. Now I'm nervous because I have an rt85. I don't have any issues with the cueing lever so far. Too expensive for a faulty lever.

Yep. That is why there are also CDs, digital music and in the old days I used to record my records to cassette. But yes, I get it. Be careful with your records. I recently was careless with a tshirt that somehow banged into a record I was playing skating the tonearm across the record! Arrrrgh!
