Going with what the wife likes. And buying her lunch? You are truly a wise and kindly man. Sir, I think I speak for the majority of viewers on this channel when I say we’ll watch your content no matter where you post. Whatever is most beneficial, cost/time-effective for you, I say go for it. Variety is the spice of life. I’d love to see more woodworking, leatherworking, or other hand craft videos. Another excellent video sir.

John, you inspired me to upgrade our old cabin. It's similar to yours, except built from 18th century shipwreck wood. It's very sturdy, but drafty. So dog rolls beside (Brit-speak for sausage rolls) and a mug of hot coffee, I've inserted thin strips of very hard Greenheart, the type used in building breakwater groynes. Greenheart comes from Venezuela, but in 'raw' form is poisonous if one gets a splinter, so it's best carefully cut when raw, then left to harden in the sun. Our cabin should last at least 100 years. I loved your video, appreciating how much prep went into the filming of it. All the best from Wendi 🌻

I saw those 2 Muzzleloaders on your wall. When I 1st started blacksmithing, about 45 years ago; I started making replacement parts to repair flintlocks and caplocks. Bending, forging, filing, drilling, boring, heat treating, case hardening, tempering to make or repair parts for the black powder crowd. Making of main and frizzen springs was a challenge. Making a non sparking frizzen; spark! Eventually I met up with a guy that was a welder that part of his apprenticeship was blacksmithing at a shipyard. I learned a lot from him‼️ I really enjoy all your videos, no matter what the subject or content is.

We're somewhat kindred spirits. Some folks are laser focused on one thing, and they are wonderful to watch, but I've always been more practical. Learn more skills and develop them so they are useful. Getting really good at some, but being satisfied with doing acceptable work on most. Lifetime learning is a fulfilling pursuit.

Good idea to expand the BBF channel to include the cabin build and other things around your place. Another craftsman I watch is Dave Engles (channel is Engles Coach Shop) who builds/rebuilds horse-drawn vehicles. He recently started adding his after work projects, which he posts on Tuesdays with his coach shop videos continuing to be posted on Fridays. His after work projects are typically what he does on his properties. He has some off-grid ranch land and some rentals in town that he works on. That content ranges from things like fencing, water system installation, working on his old tractor for the ranch and he's also renovating a 100yr old brick hotel that was later converted into 1bdrm apts (that project has become something of an archaeological dig). This additional content adds to the value of his channel, not detracting from it. Maybe you could add a day when you post non-forge videos or maybe do every other week. WRT shorts, I don't like the format so rarely watch them in general. (I guess I'm not so flighty as to get bored with a video if it's over a few minutes long.) In addition to not liking the auto play where it goes to the next short (that I may or may not be interested in), what I really find frustrating with them is that I can't rewind a few seconds if I miss something that was said or want to see something I glimpsed, with the only option of being to rewatch the video from the beginning so I try to avoid them. Looking forward to whatever you decide to do!

As always I really appreciate the transparency John. I've started to avoid shorts all together, since the vast majority of them are useless and exhibit all of the worst tendencies of the wider KZitem culture. I do actually enjoy yours (since I love blacksmithing) but I happen to think that separating your main channel from the shorts stuff is a good move. It may make sense for you to keep producing shorts for BBF2, that's up to you, but in my opinion that channel seems like its mostly a distraction and confusion on top of the two others so I wouldn't be upset if you abandoned it formally. Seems like that would allow you to focus your time and attention on the main channel and the vlog channel. Three may be a crowd. In terms of branching out into some non-blacksmithing content, I think that would be great. Every blacksmith has other projects too, and at the end of the day we all love seeing projects worked on regardless of what their subject is.

7:11 great that videos on BBF are coming back, love them!!! But I have a comment on the horrible plastic clinking applied on the cabinet... ugly, not sustainable.. like abusing this fantastic old wooden structure. Apply a authentic method to it, is 100 times better prettier and costs a lot less. Looking forward to the videos of BBF

Here's an idea John, When you make hardware for the cabin, show us the making and where it's going to go in the cabin. Also, when you do something like a spring pole lathe, forge the cutting tools and gouges as they would've back in the day when spring pole lathes were on almost every homestead like in Colonial America.

The gray stuff you put behind the chinking material is that official thinking foam I’ve only ever seen them use like the blue board that stuff you had looks a lot quicker and easier🤷♂️👍?
@JohnSwitzer

That is backer rod and it comes in different sizes for filling the gaps and providing insulation prior to chinking or caulking. Blueboard isn't recommended because it can off gas and cause the chinking material to blister.
