I get sensory issues with my hair also but didn't when young. I hate the way it feels on my neck and even on various parts of my head. I also totally resonate with feeling like you are needing it long and blonde and also being slim - I grew up in Southern California and that was part of my identity for the majority of my life.

I keep mine pulled back in a pony tail and clipped at the top most of the time to keep my hair out of my face. I’d love to shave my head. Maybe I will some day. My family hasn’t gotten used to me letting my thinking hairs grow out on my chin yet! I shut them up by saying I’m grateful for what god has given me lol. People automatically question my sexuality because I am a masculine female. I used to think I should’ve been born a man to get along better in the good old boy system since I really hate having to alter myself to be acceptable. So bravo to you and maybe I’ll do the same in the future 👍

I've always hated having hair. It was long as a child until I was old enough to choose to have it short. I grew it long for our wedding to "fit in" but hated it and hacked it all off as soon as I could afterwards. I've had a shaved head for about 25 years now. My kids aged 23 and 18 have never known me with hair so it's normal for them. Over the years I started on a Buddhist path and between the sensory issues and being Buddhist I'll never go back to growing it now. You look great with a shaved head Ella. To me, it seems that once a person shaves their head their eyes become the main feature when you look at them. I have a problem with face blindness so it could just be me that sees that lol. I have no problem looking someone in the eye because my brain isn't busy processing facial features, expressions or anything very much that will help me identify you later. I'm just staring at your eyes 🤷♀️

Cool! I've had shaved head repeatedly over the years as well, & it can be really freeing. Your explanation was perfect. You do seem a lot more unmasked in your overall presentation compared to your earlier videos on here. Once, when I was younger & in my drinking & clubbing days, I'd borrowed a blonde wig & went out wearing it. Then it bothered my head & I took it off. The difference in the way people (guys esp) looked at me with & without hair, I found hilarious. Thanks Ella & all the best x

Your hair doesn't define you, your worth, your beauty or whatever. It's just hair. And it is yours. So do whatever you want with it. The only person that has to like your hair and be happy with it is YOU. For me personally (also autistic and other disabilities) my hair is important as a form of expression. For over 10 years I have been shaving, dying, braiding my hair and it still brings me joy. I love my Mohawk, I love to dye my hair (blue, pink, purple), I love to put wool dreads in or other accessories. I've also lost my hair for 6 months because of health reasons and it was an amazing experience. Still can't decide if I want to grow it or cut it again lol. In my opinion the most important purpose of hair is having fun with it :) I think colour would suit you, too. Maybe a small purple heart or something? Also I would love to see a video about body image and autism. How do autistic people perceive themselves, how important is their body for them, is the fashion style part of the mask, is there something most autistic people enjoy maybe because of sensory overload and so on
@tracik1277
Жыл бұрын
Your comment was interesting and I think a heart would look cute! As for the autistic body image thing - yeah, I struggle with that a lot. I always feel ‘conspicuous’ regardless how I dress/hair/makeup. I hate attention of any kind, but like self expression. I have no idea if I’m attractive or ugly or whatever. I don’t really care what other people think, and believe that ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’, but I don’t want to have to deal with attention on me. I usually feel that I make myself look ‘nice’ in order to not offend anyone rather than to ‘attract’ or please anyone. I’m not young.
@serasvega8448
Жыл бұрын
@@tracik1277 omg yes, I feel exactly the same. For me it's so irritating when people comment on how I look, no matter if it's positive or negative. I dress (and style myself) the way I want and however I feel that day. I would go to a wedding in sweat pants and go grocery shopping in an expensive dress, just because I feel like it. Why would people make comments about other people's clothes or bodies at all? It's none of their business anyways. I always think "yeah, no, thank you, just leave me alone please"

@@heedmydemands I think most people like compliments. For me ist just that I don't care, I don't know how to handle the situation (I'm not very good at social interactions and when a stranger talks to me unprepared it's stressful) and I'm used to people making negative comments a about how I look (sexist stuff or "haha look at that goth girl" or "ugh, punks are filthy" or "you would be pretty without those piercings" and stuff like that) so I always expect the worst. So I think it's just me lol. Sometimes when I'm in a good mood and I see someone who has clearly put a lot of effort into their look or when they look sad, I compliment them, too. And they always seem to be very happy about it. So it seems like this is just my autistic PTSD brain that doesn't like humans in general lol also I make it very obvious that I don't want to be distracted (headphones, walk fast and look down)

I shaved my head for an unrelated reason, but as someone with autism, the amount of sensory freedom it has brought me is insane. I just wish people would stop talking about how much prettier it was when it was long. If I wanted long hair I wouldn't have cut it. You partly inspired me to shave my hair off. It literally was getting to the point where it felt like death lived on my head, plus on really bad days it was a sensory nightmare. I was diagnosed with ADHD (and was told I might be autistic too, not had the executive function to get the assessment yet). I always hated washing my hair, drying it, how it got in the way and I have been thinking alot about what gender means to me. So far, I am pretty happy with it. It takes no time at all, feels nice (to touch, with the air and to wash). It's also given me a kick up the backside to look after myself a bit better because I can't hide. Having something that ultimately takes less time, mental energy and that is essentially free to cut is pretty great at the moment. There's a part ofe that misses my hair, but not as strongly as I thought. Thanks for sharing your experience, Purple Ella!

I’ve been trying to grow it out, but the sensory feeling of it is why it’s been bunched in a bun for weeks now. I like your perspective of how our hair holds onto so much of our past experiences. I felt like I could finally be as androgynous as I want and that I no longer had to have long hair as a way to look more "normal". It also helps with sensory issues and is more convenient and changing the colour every few weeks is great for my ADHD lol

Interesting. I recently discovered there is something like a holistic hair stylist that cuts your hair intuitively and makes in into a sort of ritual. So you go into that hair cutting with a specific intention. Was thinking about doing that because I feel burnt out and depressed and am recovering from ptsd. So coming across your video on how trauma is stored in your hair as well I find very interesting. Your message also gives me confidence to go to that hair stylist and give away some control (I was afraid the hair cut would not suit me, I am overweight and ‘hairstyles should compliment you’/ and I should be attractive and other societal expectations of a woman…).
