On last Monday's BVR practice, I shot down my #3 @k3yb04rd Sorry!
My SA was really bad. In my mental picture, I was the last fighter, and bandits were closing in from the North. I turned around to face the bandits and defend my flight.
Unfortunately, as I locked up my #3, a MiG-29 from further away was showing on the inner ring on the RWR and started spiking me, further amplifying my delusion that I was about to merge with a bandit.
My AMRAAM was PITBULL immediately off the rail, there was no way stopping in now.
Only then I zoomed in to realize that I had shot a friendly.
Lessons learned:
- Helmet fire and loss of SA is a thing. Everyone is susceptible to it. Accept that it will hit you, and be extra careful when things get wild.
- Your sensors can be deceiving. Don't trust or rely on only one of them.
- ALWAYS ID your target. There was enough time to zoom in, look at the TGP, or start an IFF round. Unfortunately, I did none.
