Fix-a-flat is a huge no-no in the tire industry. The people who change the tires at the shop will hate you for life if you bring a tire with that garbage in it. And it doesn't even work! Green slime is really good stuff. Fix a flat is just a liquid that leaks right back out after you've put it in.

Enjoyed this episode. As a motorcyclist, sport tour, road adventure kind of guy this was way more interesting than just wrenching on 20 car projects that never finish. As a story it had an actual beginning, middle and end. I had forgotten all about Iron Butt, and while I never understood the attraction of droning a lean machine in a straight line on the slab (interstate) for 24 hours in a row, it is cool that you went for it and had a proper bike experience as a result. Good lessons too, gear up with tools, supplies and a compressor... if not for you for the next stranded rider you come across. Cheers!

I learned years ago to carry a 12 V air pump. Don’t trust CO2 cartridges, because like you and your situation, you would go through a dozen CO2 cartridges, just to get the tire up to 50 pounds one time. The CO2 cartridges can only equalize with the tire. Once it’s equalized, and you disconnect it, you lose half of whatever air was left in the CO2 cartridge. I have seen those string plugs that look like shoelaces with tar on them fix a slice 2inches long in the sidewall of the tire and hold.. make sure you carry the glue to vulcanize the string plugs. They will work without glue, but glue makes them much easier to put in and a better patch. I have one of those 12 V air pumps in each of my vehicles, on each bike,And I give them away as Christmas presents to people. They are approximately $10 or $12 at Walmart. The brand and I tested it pops a motorcycle tire up to 40 pounds in less than five minutes are the slime brand. They are not very big,Will actually fit in the rear pocket of your jeans, but I would not suggest that.. while you’re at Walmart getting one of these pumps, get the plug kit that looks like stream covered with tar. Those type of plugs don’t get cut by the steel belts in the tire overtime like rubber plugs do. And don’t forget to get The vulcanizing glue and make sure the plug kit you get has the rasp for making the whole the correct size to fit the insertion tool with the plug. The reason I switched from trusting CO2 cartridges to an electric pump is, I got two holes in a rear tire on the interstate while I was riding alone one day. I learned very quickly that two CO2 cartridges would not even be enough if I only had one hole in that tire. Motorcycle consumer news said that you need at least a dozen CO2 cartridges to inflate a motorcycle tire up to the correct inflation to proceed. my plan if this ever happens to me is, to call enterprise and rent a car or a pick up truck with a trailer hitch on it. Drive to U-Haul and rent a trailer. It Hass to be a low wide trailer, you’re not gonna get a gold wing into the back of a lot of the trailers that they rent, seen it.. another option would be to rent a U-Haul truck with a lift gate, but you have to be sure to have tiedowns to secure the bike in the back of the truck. it would be a good idea to buy a couple of those tiedowns, And carry them on your bike.. In my experience, I have found that 90% of tire failures happened in the last 25% of the tires life.. I wish anyone riding a motorcycle alone at night a lot of luck. I have had two deer collisions while riding motorcycles. One at 25 miles an hour on my Honda pacific coast. I did not go down. One at 70 miles an hour on my BMW K 1200 LT. I did not go down, but the headlight area of the BMW was crushed all the way back to the gauges. $5500 damage. So after 700,000+ miles of road riding, I do not ride at night anymore if I can help it

In 1982, I rode my 1978 Honda Hawk 400cc with Quicksilver fairing from LA to Flagstaff Arizona in late Winter in 10.5 hours. Then rode to The Gran Canyon. Bike ran like a champ. But I wanted a cruiser. So I bought a beat up 1977 Goldwing, with Vedder fairing. Rebuild it from the ground up. Then I got broadsided by a 75 year old man in 1984. Almost lost my left foot. I retired from motorcycling screaming my head off from the pain that night in the ER. If I was on my Hawk, I'd be dead. Riding on the street is like Russian Roulette: one day you'll get on the bike and there will be a live round in the chamber. Then BANG! Down you go. Not worth the risk.

I had a small air compressor and tire tool kit on my GS. I always had some patches with me to fix a tire if needed. I had a bird strike in the Yukon in 2006 on my way to Dawson City. It was two Ptarmigans and they took out the windshield and hit me in the chest. Obviously being startled and rolling the throttle of in gravel did me in. I flipped the GS and she went down the embankment. It took me about five hours of work to make the bike run again. I worked on it every day to mein another 4000 miles to go all over Alaska and back home.

Anyways...you could run this of two ways. The Gauntlet: Wichita to Kansas City Ks (197mi), turn and burn West to Kanorado (422mi). Kanorado to Hunnewell Ks (391mi). Grand total of 1010 miles. State Line Run: You go from Wichita to Kansas City KS (197mi), Kansas City KS to Chester NE (216mi), Chester NE to Kanorado (266mi), and finally Kanorado to Hunnewell KS (391 miles. 1070 miles.

I was down there for work and apparently it's love bug season there and all of those splats are the result of them swarming across the highway. it got so bad i hardly had a place to see out of. Bad side is i was WAY down in Florida almost in Miami so it was a long bug riddled drive back had to stop like 4 times before i got out of Florida just to wash all of the bug guts off. not a problem once i crossed into Georgia. glad everything turned out ok for you though. I think i would personally be looking into a run flat tire for that bike if i were you though*

I always thought goldwings were for old people. My mind hasn't changed.

Here in Florida they are. But nearly EVERYTHING is for old people here in Florida.

I rented a 2019 car this week to drive to Cincinnati and it had less features than your Gold Wing.

Dude! Always keep a plug kit and a small compressor on the bike, especially if you're going to be more than an hour from home! $40 and you'll definitely use it at some point, as you've learned :)
