Been an XL BGE owner for about 15 years now. Both lid and base and some accessories have been replaced under warranty several times. Got a lot of dough invested in this system and its myriad accessories. Having a serious case of Kamado Joe envy. It's clearly a superior unit and far better value with comparable lifetime warranty. Not sure but I don't recall KJ's being on the market when I invested in the Egg because I can't imagine not choosing it over the Egg given the option.

This reminds me of the debate between Ford and Chevy owners. In the end, they are both ceramic kettles. One made in China and the other made in Mexico. Both use a Weber kettle style airflow that has to be adjusted for the fire to breath and hold a temperature. I think the KJ has a better gasket system but that style of gasket can be added to the BGE from Rutland. Both have excellent warranty's. I think it comes down to where you live and who is carrying each brand and accessories for the cookers if you decide to go the ceramic route. Either one you own, it will be like owning a Harley Davidson. You'll be buying these accessories for either one that will run you $$. Probes, airflow temperauture regulators, grill grate add-ons, etc.

My brother has a hardware store and sells both the BGE and KJ. He did a lay out of everything that the KJ comes with and then the BGE with similar (add on) accessories. The price ended up being slightly better for KJ. The support for KJ has impressed him more as well. He has no skin in the game, being a dealer for both. But when I asked his opinion he emphatically said to go KJ after selling both and using both for over a year.

@@SmokingDadBBQ The Blaze is about a solid inch of cast aluminum, and virtually indestructible. They've done a bunch of crazy tests with it, like putting 10 pounds of charcoal in and burning it at 225 for 27.5 hours before the temp drops and showing there were 2 pounds of charcoal left, to putting explosives inside it vs a ceramic, to putting it in salt water for a week then cleaning it up and cooking in it, to holding a 6000+ degree torch on it and showing it take 15 minutes to bore a hole in it.

praetorxyn oh I believe it. Think I have even seen some of those videos. I’ve not cooked on one, but I have cooked on other metal Kamado style cookers and there is such a thing as too efficient. One the things I like most about the series 3 vs the series 2 is that with the extra 4” in height they are LESS efficient which requires a better burning fire which improves the taste snd smoke ring IMO.

I literally just saw this video and had to chime in. I have been using a Weber grill for about 30 years and knew NOTHING about these BBQ smokers. My wife wanted to buy a BGE for a specific reason so we bought one. I think it was about $1200 OTD and we have had it about 2 years. Considering I was completely neutral when we bought it, in 2 years I have come to hate it. Why? Here we go..... 1) The hinge on the BGE is an absolute joke. Good luck lifting the lid and having complete access to the grill area. When I make ribs, I continually hit the back of the lid with the ribs because there isnt enough clearance. Its a design flaw. 2) The method to clean out the BGE is an utter joke. Seriously, they make a screwdriver type tool to scrape out the bottom of the BGE!? Seriously?? 3) The gasket is just more bad design flaws. We actually started the BGE one day and had to run out unexpectedly. When we got back, the BGE was like 700 degrees and the gasket was on fire!!! I have never seen that on ANY BBQ before! 4) The lid constantly goes out of alignment and you loose the seal. Im extremely mechanically inclined and know what I am doing. It gets "overbite" and "underbite" all the time and needs to be adjusted. 5) I don't understand why the heat controls (lid and sliding door) have no marks for temp control. Seems kind of basic but its all guess work. 6) The stand is garbage. The BGE is heavy and the stand that is included is absolute junk. Ours is all bent and twisted now and it should have come with a better stand after 2 years. 7) The handle is loose on ours and there doesn't appear to be a way to tighten it. The BGE should have been totally redesigned because many of the problems I encountered have been known for years. $1200 for a BBQ/Smoker with all these issues? Really?? I would love to sell the BGE and get the KJ. Its light years ahead of the BGE in every way. I would NEVER EVER recommend a BGE. They are 50 years behind the KJ and have all the design flaws to prove it.

I have another brand of grill that has the same type of diffuser plate as the BGE. I also have an old original Vision grill that I put the older KJ diffuser plate. I noticed right away that with the BGE style with the wings I would get cool and hot spots around the grill. 3 hot spots and 3 cool spots. Wanted to go with one large Kamado and looking at most of the cheaper brands out there many of them use the BGE style. I have stayed away from those. Just picked up the KJBJ from Costco when they were on sale. I have never considered a BGE due to the diffuser plate setup.

I have purchased 4 BGE over the years. I would not hesitate on buying a Kamado Joe. A local egg dealer sells a $500 gift certificate for $250. Using one of those saves me $250. The cost of the mini with the carrier and platesetter was about $325. If it were not for the gift certificate I would be buying Kamado Joe. I like the fact that they come with more accessories in the base price. BGE does very little in regards to improving the product. They ruled the market for quite some time and have become complacent.

Love your videos and presentaton style! I am a BGE owner, and I really wish a meteor would hit it so I could have a reason to go get a KJ Classic III. That being said, if you are like me and have a BGE, I think it is important to note that a lot of the benefits of the KJ can work in your egg! The slow roller is advertised as fitting in a large BGE, and you can buy a Kick Ash Basket and catch pan as well. The newer BGE hinge is better than the older ones, but KJ clearly is superior. As far as that joke of a gasket on a BGE, I recently replaced mine with a Rutland gasket and that seems to have fixed that issue. So there is a path for us BGE owners to get some of the KJ perks!

Thanks very good video - I saw my first KJ at costco recently and was very impressed and agree some of the features are much better than BGE. I knew about KJ when I first started looking but having nowhere I could actually look at the KJ made me somewhat hesitant. However being frugal and always wanting a bargain I kept perusing the KJ. But in the end I went with the BGE XL egg spander, half moons, and the modular nest system. I have to say that the dealer put a package together that really brought the cost pretty close to the KJ. Not much of a discount on the egg but the accessories were discounted enough to bring it close. On top of that they delivered and set up the entire thing. Since then I had a question about the thermometer and they replaced it without hesitation. I would also say the Red color is a big tun off for me and plastic handles make the KJ look lower quality even if it not. I also love the modular system which is not something KJ does. Having said all that if I am in the market again I would consider KJ.

All great points in green vs red. I have a Char-Griller Akorn. Brother in law gave it to me, but you can buy one for $300, new. Joetiserrie and DoJoe fit in it. You can do 99% or more of what you can do with a Joe. I've run 14hr smokes with one load. If nothing else it's a reasonably priced entry to kamado cooking. If you have become addicted in 5 years, buy a ceramic kamado and keep the Akorn to take to tailgates. Or save $750 and buy another Akorn. I do wish they made a 24" model or oval one. There is nothing at all wrong with any ceramic grill. If you have the bucks, by all means outpace the Joneses . If you want to "waste" your $ on prime cuts instead, buy an Akorn.

Chris Clinger hey Chris, how many people are you cooking for? I can do a brisket and or 3 racks of ribs laid flat on the Classic

@@SmokingDadBBQ Thanks for the reply! I love your channel! I have a family of 4, with 2 small children. We occasionally entertain for an additional 6-12 people about once a month. So more than 90% of cooks will be for just my crew. I would hate to not spend the extra now for the space, but the BJ would be overkill most of the time.. The smokeware grate looks like it could add valuable space without the wasted charcoal of the Big. Every forum I've read has a majority of people recommending the BJ, so I'm conflicted.

Chris Clinger the big Joe 3 comes with a charcoal basket divider so I would just use that for most everything to reduce charcoal consumption. The gen 3 Classic is 4” taller than the series 2 so it gets a three tier grid vs the 2 tier divide and conquer system on the older models. I use the KJ grid extender for more space (it holds two spatchcocked chickens up top). I didn’t keep my smokeware stacker ... for me it takes up more space than you think on the grid and when you swing it open it drips on your gasket, table or deck which I didn’t like.

Chris Clinger I have a Big Joe II, and what helped me make the choice was a comment I read/heard when I was looking at the sizing. “I never heard anyone say they wished they had a smaller grill”. I think you will be happy with whatever you pick. After using it for about 4 years, with 2 people, I’m definitely glad I went bigger, especially when I do two zone grilling where you basically split the grill in half. Oh, and the Costco roadshow deal. You can get a Big Joe with a cover at a 25% discount, but also a free Joe Jr and bag of charcoal. At least that’s what it was when I bought mine.

Great video! A lot of reasons I chose to go with KJ as well. My wife sent me to website since she knows I like to compare numbers. She actually converted me to go with KJ the night before we were supposed to go place a purchase for the BGE. I am so happy with this decision as well. Great videos, keep it up. I still like the OG BGE, I just like team red better. Innovation and price won me.

Had my red komado joe for approximately 1 year now. Looked after it really well as in stored properly undercover. Both heat deflectors just cracked into 2 and 3 pieces. Ok , both were replaced under warranty although that took 5 weeks to happen from their end. Next was the felt gasket that's falling apart. Sadly this isn't covered by warranty! So chunks of the gasket have fallen apart leaving big air leaks. Urgh , really disappointed! ! I nearly sold my offset stick burner when I got my komado , really really glad I didn't now! So after paying $1500australian , I really feel letdown by komado joe. Can't say I really wanna recommend them to my friends.

Kris B sorry you’ve had such bad luck. Do you have the first generation which has the felt gasket vs the fibreglass mesh? The second generation and newer got a mesh gasket, new firebox design, new vent top and air hinge etc. I know lots of egg people who have had gasket trouble.... you can’t use the new KJ gasket since it needs to be stored without weight on it but you can use a “Rutland gasket” which I’ve seen amazing reviews on for durability and seal
@dirtrider88

@@SmokingDadBBQ can you elaborate more about it needing to be stored without weight on it? which gasket and why? seems like a horrible design if the lid needs to always be left open.

dirtrider88 well lots of people don’t know that and leave it latched all the time so it doesn’t ruin anything. I just read it remains bouncy / cushion like if you leave it un latched when not using it. My eggs dome would shift when doing pizza (hot, around 800) and then I would have an underbite or overbite which the fire would damage my gasket during the cook. This doesn’t happen on the airlift hinge so I don’t mind un latching it when I remember to do so
@ProBassGuitarPlayer

Sorry sir, but I disagree. The ceremic form the BGE is from a better quality = better temp control. Kamado Joe is more innovative but isn’t taking the time for quality control. Both kamados have lifelong warrenty but the BGE has better service. I’m speaking from the Netherlands, maybe its better there where you live. Kamado Joe is very active on social media what possibly put you on a misstep. Sorry for my english
@SmokingDadBBQ
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. I am not a scientist and can't test if the ceramic recipe leads to better airflow / temp control. What I can say 100% is that the KJ 3 with the SloRoller is more stable at low and slow temps and does a better job with smoke rings. Primo has better Ceramics than BGE by that Logic... but neither grill can reach the temperature that they are kiln fired at. Its like having a tire on your car that's rated for 200mph on a vehicle that can't go above 100mph. It's not really a benefit when either grill can't reach the temp to make this a problem and even if they could, they both have lifetime warranty. Glad to hear have a good dealer, the dealer experience is so important. I am lucky to have good dealers for each and the manufacturers both have a good presence in Canada so I had no issues with either company

I’ve changed my mind multiple times b/t the KJ, BGE and Weber Summit Charcoal. I’m partially leaning BGE b/c I’d rather look at a green kamado than red. I know that’s superficial and like the air hinge and gasket and top vent better on the KJ, but gotta trust your gut on this one. Convince me I’m wrong, haven’t made a final choice yet.

I would say having owned several colours they all eventually grow on you despite preference early one. Black, Red, Green etc. isn't something I think about a year or a decade after buying a grill. You're shopping the best of the best, so there isn't a wrong answer. BGE has a better handle, and I like that the vent cap is cast iron vs. cast aluminum as the finish stays better years down the road. KJ IMO is the best breathing ceramic Kamado that I have ever used. The food tastes and looks better (smoke ring from gen 3 is easy peasy)... then there are benefits like the hinge, the gasket, the divide and conquer included, charcoal basket included, sloroller etc. its way more grill for the money

FLIP if you own anything electronic chances are it was made in China. The egg is made in Mexico, after buying and using both there is nothing to suggest one countries quality is better than the others. Both have lifetime ceramic warranties. At this point into ownership my EGG firebox and fire ring had cracked and my bands had become misaligned and needed to be replaced... I haven’t had those issues on either Joe. I doubt this is due to country of origin more so the design approach each company has

3 reasons? i only hear one and that is price! Yes you have more bang for your buck, and there are some handy accessories but nothing BGE can't have too! Except for slow roller and the pizza thing, i don't think they add that much value, but how about looks? No way i have such a ugly thing in my backyard. There is only one, that is even more disgusting and that's a primo ;). I let the girl choose, and green it is!!
