Wow chain drive rear wheel drive! Revolutionary! Honda still dominates with their NC Series but yes, this is the prototypical overly-refined answer to Everything Japan. Really not into euro-tard machines excepting perhaps the Royal Enfield but for this extreme an activity I think you're spot on for *"going there"* with this here. Still waiting on Toyota hybrid drive systems to finally start making its way into the twin adventure World where fuel and reliability is such truly a premium.

Instead of thinking "how can we make the GS even bigger, more expensive and more powerful? 1200cc isn't enough, we need 1300!", I wish they thought "so the GS is a proven adventure platform with more than enough power, lets see if we can make it lighter!". I understand this would go against what the majority of what the market wants and that's why they have other bikers in their line-up, but a 210kg 1250 GS would be cool to see.

Anything over 1000cc is really just a road bike with off-road capable tires. They are too big and too heavy to really enjoy off pavement riding. Under 500cc for off road use, under 1000cc for dual touring/adventure use and the big ones for gravel but mostly hiway use. This bike is a good dual use capable of a good range of mix on/off road use.

FYI....my friend purchased an 890 last year - loves the bike. HOWever, there were rumors they have camshaft issues - he disassembled the top end last month and sure enough, one of the Cam Journal bearings were eaten away - his bike had only 7000km (4400mi). Him being a Motorcycle Mechanic for over 35 years, did some research and found out KTM has parts built in China and assembles them in Austria. Although his bike has a month warranty left, 2 to 3 months wait for the parts!! A Rockwell Hardness test on the Camshaft Journal vs. a Camshaft from a 1999 CBR found the metal on the Honda cam to be 75% harder then the KTM cam. THAT is major QC issue and another one to the list of ongoing KTM problems I have heard of! Buy a T7 and avoid future headaches!

Ian, I'm really excited about this review, along with your upcoming longterm test reviews. I am EXACTLY where you are concerning my thoughts of getting away from big adventure bikes, such as my R 1250 GS. I test rode a '22 Triumph Tiger 900 GT Pro and immediately bought one. Yes, I own more bikes than I care to admit. EXACTLY as you mentioned, by the time I added all of the protection, aluminum panniers, etc. to my Tiger 900 GT Pro, it all of a sudden lost it's "Schwinn" feeling that initially won me over. Huge BMW fan boy and LOVE my R 1250 GS, I'm one of those "phony" adventure bike riders, who never goes off-road. I simply like the look and feel of an adventure bike. Dying to hear what you think of your new KTM's "highway manners," as that's where mine will spend the majority of its time., in addition to a fair amount of around town riding. My "go to" bike right now is a '20 Ducati Scrambler Icon. I had to dump a bunch of money into it to make it worth a damn. Quite sure the OEM suspension on that bike came from the Dollar Store. The main reason I ride it everywhere is its ease of maneuvering at slow speeds, including moving it around the garage. Not to mention how much easier it is to get on and off it. It's a very average bike at best, but an absolute dream to handle/manuever. I have to get on and off my Tiger 900 GT Pro and R 1250 GS (with the Touratech Ultra Low Seat) like a horse. I'm soon to be 72 years young, 5' 10" and shrinking, along with a pair of "too much football hips." The standard KTM 890 Adventure, with a Seat Concepts low seat, may just be the ticket. Thank you in advance!!!

I think the upper mid-size adventure bikes are so well equipped, so capable and so well engineered that the bigger, full size adventure bikes have now become redundant! The main reason people gravitated to the larger bikes was the long-distance touring rationale, which truly now does not hold water. You can tour on the 700-900cc and other mid-size bikes just as well as you can on anything 1200cc or larger! And why lug around all that extra weight? Important Notes about the warranty periods Ian, did not know that so thanks. My question to you is....will the new 790 Adventure upset the apple cart if KTM decide to price it competitively?

I went from a F850GSA to the 890 Adventure /s and I couldn't be happier. The F850GSA took at least a half dozen "naps" in the 3,500 miles I owned her, one at a stop light. I was just looking at a text message on my phone, which was handle bar mounted, while stopped at the light when I realized I was going over. There was just no stopping that 550 lb top heavy monster from going over. Rear steps out in a clay rut - over you go. Come to a stop and you didn't realize there was a slight rut under your left foot and over you go. On the 890 I just reached 3,500 miles and no "naps". None even close. Tail end steps out off road no problem to bring it back. Slight rut under that left foot - no problem. Seat height, weight and center of gravity are physics, one should stack physics to their advantage. An interesting test of all ADV bikes would be a "lean test". How many degrees to each side can you lean the bike before it takes a certain amount of force, say 75 lbs, to keep it from going over. I bet the 890 would win this test hands down.

Great choice. I should have bought the base model 890 instead of the R model that I currently ride. The extra cost isn't justified and I don't really use the additional capabilities. I do use the cruise control and the most important option, the heated grips. On a few occasions I have used the rain mode but generally I use the factory settings for road and off road. These bikes aren't really light weight so I have reverted to my old DRZ 400 for most off road (trail) riding. Due to the size and weight my 890 has largely become a touring bike that handles gravel or unpaved roads for which it works reasonably well.

I sold a 2014 GS with 95K miles and bought a 2021 KTM 890 Adventure R. I rode it for 10K miles and sold it to buy another BMW GS! The KTM 890 R front suspension high speed dampening was awful and beat you up on sharp edge bumps and I spent $300 trying to soften the the initial hit but no help. Supposedly that's been addressed on later models. The KTM still weighs nearly 500 pounds and unlike the BMW lays flat when on its side unlike the BMW making picking it up a real pain! I'm 6'1" and the wind coverage was awful and a wind deflector helped, but buffeting was still and issue. I loved the power and handling of the KTM and it was faster than my BMW, but ultimately at 71 I wasn't going to ride single track and the BMW GS will do fire roads all day long and cover miles more comfortably.

I added a spong prefilter at the bottom of the airbox chamber where the water drain ports are because lots of dust can sneak in there. I own the Tiger 900 Rally, 54 jears jung, my wife and I are always riding together and are more then happy with it, don't see the motivation why I should carry around so much weight and also love the enduro lighter style, The only time I miss my heavy Bike is on long straight Motorways witch I try to avoid aniway. 😎 appreciate your channel very much

hey man, love your videos, in particular the in depth series. Love the Aprilia Tuareg review. One thing I'd love to see a video on...how do you get your bike in and out of your truck and tie it down so it stays secure, and what's the best way to transport your bike long distances?

You are absolutely right...the large Adv bikes are good for long distance touring, but are a nightmare on the trails, whereas the mid weight Adv bikes strikes that perfect balance between off roadability and Touring. And that KTM parallel twin is one of the funnest engine of the decade.

Great choice on the 890 Ian and defiantly looking forward to the rest of the series. I would love to see a video of a 1290 SAR one day down the track. Keep making great content man, one of the best motorcycle channels out there!

Don't forget to test if you turn off the bike - does your wheelie control and other setting stay as you set - off (for example) or they re-set. I had the 2021 model, and it very frustrating in offroading. Every time you switch off the bike, you have to set back all the settings.

Thanks for the review! I only want the R for the blue color but otherwise would be super happy with the base model. I also like the 2023 visual redesign as well.

Thank you for your help in choosing my new motorcycle! I ended up going with the 2023 KTM 890 Adventure, and your video helped with my decision. Much appreciated!

I'm far from an expert on riding or bike knowledge, and have only owned KTM's. My first was a 640 SM, then a 950 SM, then a 1290 SD, then an 890 Adv and currently a 1290 Super Adventure S. I do several one to two week road trips per year, primarily on pavement where I find hard curves addictive. The 950 was the best of the lot for fun, and the 890 was nearly as nimble, yet more comfortable, but I dearly missed the V twin power of the SD. In spite of it's size, the SA seems to combine everything the others did well.

You are absolutely right. ONLY thing I would like to be convinced of is the reliability of the 890 KTM. I am between the 890 adventure and the 890 SMT. What fresh design it has.

I like a lot about these 890s. I would seriously consider picking one up if I could be confident the engine wouldn’t eat its own cams at 15-20,000 miles.

@@ambassadorofconciliation my brother has a norden, which uses the same engine as far as I know for the most part. He has 23k miles on his bike. A lot fair bit of dirt and commuting. He just did his valves at 22k and had no issues. They were in spec our local race shop said. Just this past weekend, he burnt out his clutch in deep sand while we were riding two up. I got my "18 Africa Twin stuck in deep mud. Plan was to ride out on his bike... that didn't happen hahahaha. All in all, these bikes so far are pretty awesome. I love my Honda though.

I agree about cruise. Ian going back to having only 1 bike soon and that is a must for me. This 890 seems to hit pretty much all I am looking for.

I just went from the 890 Adv S to the 1290 Super Adv R... I loved the 890 but the 1290 power is really addictive 😉😀 But for sure the extra weight is more work... especially in dense traffic and after a long ride it really starts to make a difference. Except for long haul on highway being in advantage of the 1290. Overall the 1290 is superior of course, but also much more expensive. So I think the ratio performances to price is in the advantage of the 890. And also, I still can not get out of my mind that lighter is better, so I might well go back to the 890 in a while 😀

No doubt smaller bike is always better off-road and more fun on twisties, and big bikes are always better for long miles and highway. As always, it comes down to how you plan to ride and where on that bike spectrum you should be.

I started making plans to sell my R1250GSA the minute I rode a T700, despite the significant drop in output. Unless you are doing extremely long interstate jaunts, there's just no real need for that sort of power in an adv bike, given the weight penalty that comes along with it.

I support 100% your decision. Too much reviews of 1250GS so many of this 2023 KTM890 adv base model. I hope you can compare it with the Norden 901 since the upgraded suspension may cut some of the differences between both. Eager to see your detailed and professional review of this bike!,

That’s cool I just bought my 2023 KTM 890 Adventure base model bike just like that one 2 months ago and for all the reasons you just explained Ian, but I did upgrade the suspension to 220mm from Ted’s Beamer Shop to the TracTive suspension from the Norden 901 spec page and they had told me I was the first to have done this on the 2023 KTM 890 Adventure base model. And it is still way lower than the R version and more comfortable to ride anywhere and it matches my 260 pound weight!

When they came out with the Adventure in 2019 Brett Tkacs did a video on the std. model and said it was more than enough for most ADV riders. The new 890 is even better and agree with your reasonings and assessment. I have a 790 R because I do pound it off road quite often and appreciate its capability for that. Going on 20,000 trouble free miles. Fantastic bikes!

Like you I have just downsized, from a Yamaha SuperTenere to a Yamaha T700, and I would just as happily ride the T7 across Australia, with more scope to get slightly more off-road. Basically I am looking at 60Kg difference, so why would I not. Only item really necessary to upgrade is the fuel tank, I went for the 25 litre Safari tank. Happy days.

for me the way its SIMPLE mechanic system and ligth weigth and so it becomes cheap to do mainteinance and reduce the cost of it. so yeah that bike its already a beast and a luxury in itself its more than enough.

What a great idea, I really believe that the mid size bikes are way better than the huge "full" size bikes, and thanks for get the cooking model, totally agree with your thinking. I am about to change my current bike, and it's down to the 890 or a Honda Transalp 750, so watching your great channel as well as "Rocketman" great reviews. Thank you

The base model 890 Adv makes the most sense to me since I'm not experienced off road and I don't anticipate extreme dirt roads in my future. I like the tires and the tall windscreen. I think I'd rather still with the mid range models on the market because I'm not loaded with dough. I do like the BMW boxer engine sound, but the big bike is quite big relative to it's distant ancestors.

I purchase the exact same bike little over a month ago, don't even have a 1000 miles on it lol. Love it! When from Ducati to Honda and now KTM. Unfortunately, mine is currently in the shop for it's second warranty repair. 1st was crankshaft oil leak, had to wait for parts. Now it's the engine case gasket, so more parts and a lot more labor. I have zero intention of selling because I've never ridden a bike with cruise control that is as fun (and easy) to ride as this one.

Can't wait for the full reviews! I test rode the Adv and Adv R. I'm 5'9 and the Adv was so prefect for me. R was a bit tall, but doable. Now I want to test ride the 901 Expedition to see if maybe that is the perfect in between, with all the lux items that the Adv has, but also the better suspension that the R has! Bring on your reviews of the Adv Ian, thanks!! 🏍💨
