Our today’s interviewee:
Leszek Żukowski (born 1929), Warsaw Uprising fighter and prisoner of KL Flossenbürg. During his detention in the concentration camp, he worked at a factory producing Messerschmitt aircraft parts. Whenever he used up his tools in a standard manner, he was beaten by the Germans for alleged sabotage. Another prisoner who would plead on his behalf using rational arguments was beaten as well. The camp routine included morning and evening roll-calls, which were relatively brief when the headcount was right. If a prisoner died or escaped, the roll-call would last until the situation was cleared. Escapees had no chance of survival - they were hanged before dawn for all to see. Sometimes after an evening roll-call prisoners did not receive their bread ration and instead were sent to obligatory “delousing,” which involved a short bath and a long period of standing outside completely naked until the morning - regardless of the season. Leszek Żukowski, who wasn’t aware of this process, naively asked for a chance to bathe and was maliciously sent to such “bath.” He survived three nights in a row without sleep or food.
