Hey how are you guys I own a bmw f30 335i m sport package and I had the same thing on the screen drive train malfunction one of the rod bearings went out so I had to get a new engine it's a common issue with the m3 e92, f80, m4,f30 and n54 engines.make sure you are always checking your oil and change your oil accordingly and putting too much stress on the car and driving it reckless will crank your hub or rods at some point. But if you drive your car normally like a normal human being before you hit 70,000 miles you should definitely change your rods because it's a time bomb on BMW's bearings to go out and if they go out you will need a new engine like me. And it's not fun and cheap especially for M series! Just and fyi for people that are looking to buy a bmw.

Do you have a 335i m sport, e92 m3 or a f80 m3? The three are different motors. The e92 M3 has a 4.0 v8. The 335i M sport N54 has a six cylinder single turbo open deck motor. The f80 M3 has a closed deck twin turbo motor with no issues of rod bearings but has issues with the crankhub. You are comparing apples to oranges with the different motors. Rod bearings was an issue with the E90 series motors alone and has never been an issue with the F series B58 340i single turbo motors or F80 S55 twin turbo motors because the rod bearings are not the same.

on bimmerpost, it is considered a rare occurrence. Mostly when people are stage 2 and up, especially e85. The general consensus is that a crank bolt capture plate, will keep the bolt from loosening itself off, hence keep the little sprocket wheel that is being clamped from spinning. BUT there is still a small chance of the sprocket wheel spinning, with the bolt clamped onto it tight. This can happen to stock m3/m4's as well but very rare and it is said that, usually its just a timing adjustment issue.
