This is my favorite KZitem video ever! I've watched it several times and every time I get goosebumps! When the training session starts with the shot of heavy snow falling, sounds of the waterfall, picture perfect snow-clad countryside Japan, snow falling on Ryotaro, the sounds of the chime and the horn, Takeharu's Japanese chants and his life experience and that final shot of both Ryotaro and Takeharu in the distance climbing the mountain, along with very clever and beautiful choices of background music with your documentary style commentary, the video could not be more perfect. Thank you, Chris-san.

It's easy to forget about 'being in the moment' when all of your 'moments' are spent working. Working on yourself, your children, your finances, your work, etc. If I wasn't a Florida boy and could, at least, stand the cold I'd be there in a Japanese heartbeat.

I think of this frequently, and often spend my weekends looking up how to do this. How to survive, grow food, build shelters, etc., and you should check out the Primitive Technology channel. Take a look at the Shojin Ryori cooking style, it is almost entirely vegan (with the exception of a few modern dishes as milk and eggs just weren't available to the Japanese Buddhists). Also you may be happy to know that shojin ryori doesn't use onions or garlic due to their strong flavor, which would go against the philosophy of balance by over-powering other ingredients. I have one cookbook but I hope to expand my collection. Also, vegan as well.

One of the reasons why I went to Japan alone is precisely because of the silence thing the old man said. When I was there in a lonely temple, in the woods or just having a walk in Kyoto on a rainy night, being alone is what made me enjoy it at its fullest. When you travel with someone else you spend more time talking to the other person or making sure they are following you or they like what they see, etc. If you ever go to Japan, go alone.

As a Norwegian from Ye Olde Place of Snow and Ice, I am quite puzzled by Japan's lack of insulation. There are a fair number of places in Japan that get genuinely cold in winter, so why? This will never cease to mystify me...
@lulu9759
6 жыл бұрын
I've never thought about that, so I googled and found an interesting article in Japanese (style.nikkei.com/article/DGXKZO81592170W5A100C1TJP001). It refers a famous passage of "Tsurezuregusa" by Kenko Yoshida: "houses should be made based on summer. We can live anywhere in winter." Although I don't believe we can live anywhere in winter, I think these words summarize a Japanese tradition. For instance, my grandparents do not want to use heater and cooler as much as possible. I asked them why, and they said because it's unnatural.

I was so excited to see how Risotto, I mean Ryotaro was going to try to kill you in this vlog! He didn’t even try! Maybe he thought you having to be quiet was punishment enough 😂

A kerosene heater in a house with paper walls seems like a fire hazard

Well, it is. Accident involving kerosene heater is actually quite common.

Yeah it is. But it's not like you can't just open a window/door and walk/jump out

In the west of Japan, There is no snow. So I was surprised when I watched this video. I live in Hiroshima, I've never seen such a snow face of the mountain. You should come to Miyajima, by the way. You can enjoy a different atmosphere at Itsukushima shrine and Misen mountain compare with Yamabushi. Oh, I forgot to tell you guys, It is not translating for my Japanese ;)

In Finland we have this saying that "silence is gold". Looking at that wintery scenery was already a very calming experience so I can just imagine how it'd feel like actually being there, surrounded by the nature and its sounds.

It's interesting we Japanese too have a similar phrase that Chinmoku Wa Kinnari or 沈黙は金なり, meaning silence is gold.

Hey, in Poland we have a saying: "Talk is silver and silence is gold." So that is very similar.

We have that saying in Romanian too. "Tăcerea e de aur" - silence is made of gold.

That opening deserves to be longer with that music and views. Maybe a video in itself.

That snowfall in the mountains was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. Being in that moment just to appreciate the world around must be another level of existing. Bucket list material.

To be more precise, Yamabushido is called Shugendo. 山伏道は正しくは修験道(しゅげんどう)と言います。 東京八王子の高尾山薬王院も修験の寺です。 京都の醍醐寺も修験の寺です。 彼らは特別な行事の時にのみ山伏装束を着ます。
