Plus, the energy loss when one metal tool strikes another is quite high. You impart all of the energy of the swing directly into the wood when you just use a splitter, whereas I'd imagine quite a lot of energy is lost to noise and heat and absorbed by the wedge, so the log experiences less impact as well as having that impact more spread out.

It’s a splitting maul, so essentially, yes. One side is an unhardened sledge hammer for driving wedges. The other side is like an axe, but with a really aggressive taper to the cheeks and a less acute sharpening angle to give the edge higher durability. They work well, especially in softwoods, but if they aren’t ground properly, they can have a tendency to bounce after a swing.

Yeah, I'm not defending it. It was clearly made by someone who doesn't actually do the work (like many things made by engineers). I'm only saying that if you were determined to incorporate this concept somehow, it makes sense to attach the "X blade" directly to sledge; separating the 2 just causes metal on metal impact with no added benefit. Maybe if the cutting edge was sharper, with a more narrow edge, that quickly beveled out to divide without sticking.... Or the idea can just go on the trash where it belongs.

I miss helping my dad chop firewood, I think he misses it too but we moved down south years and years ago so don't need it anymore. I was always so proud carrying as much of the aged wood as my arms could hold to first fill the bin in the house next to the wood stove and then filling one side of the front steps then strapping a tarp down. We would do that before starting to cut new wood so dad could condense the older wood we would use first and make room for the new wood. I would set up the logs and my sis would move the cut pieces to the side til dad was done splitting logs for the day and then we would carry and stack the wood on the wood pile pallets. I also was in charge of grabbing the wedge the infrequent times he needed it. One of the moments that caused me the most respect for my father was while chopping firewood when i was 8. The axe hit at a bad angle or something the log went one way and the axe continued its motion into my dad's thigh. He quietly said fuck then told my 6 yr old sister to go get mom and just tell her they needed to drive somewhere so she would bring the car keys, but not to tell her he was injured. Mom can handle any of us hurt as long as she learns about it while being able to see us or hear us tell her ourselves but if she can't see/hear us she panics that it is worse than was said and we are dying lol. He also told her to bring him a beer and a towel on her way back. He then calmly turned to me and said he had to leave it in for the doc so he needed to use me as a crutch so he could keep leg straight and hold the axe in place with one hand and grip my shoulder with the other. I walked with him to the driveway we got there just as my sis and mom did. He reassured mom he was fine and it wasn't bleeding enough to have hit an artery but to be safe he was gonna let the doctors remove the axe. He then told her she needed to drive, he took the beer and downed it then took the towel wrapped the axe head and leg to keep it steady got in the back seat with me and had me press on the the towel on each sides of the axe and he held the handle with his leg stretched across the back seat and me on the floor boards. Mom drove to the hospital they took it out and gave him stitches. He never yelled, cried or panicked. He stayed calm to keep us calm and so we wouldn't be scared. It had to hurt like hell but he maintained his composure and did what was needed. And 3 weeks later he took out his own stitches with a fork and scissors. He went back to chopping wood 2 weeks after he got hit cause according to him "winter ain't gonna wait for me to heal and we need to get this fully stacked and dry before the snow comes". Last winter back home we got 20 feet of snow. He told me years later that was the second hardest time he ever had staying calm for us, so we wouldn't be scared. The first was when he was using a chainsaw to cut branches while my mom held the ladder and somehow he dropped it and the running saw bounced off my moms clavicle. She could so easily have been killed. She still has a visible scar 30+ years later. She didn't cry either though her hands were shaking and first thing she did was reasure me and dad that she was fine. Both of my parents are fucking badasses. Mom didn't even want to go to the hospital cause she had to make dinner and didn't want to scare my little sis. Woo sorry for the novel these videos just bring up so many strong memories of my childhood.

People without the physical ability to safely swing an axe do use wedges to split, but usually they use a straight wedge rather than a cross like this. They are faster, take significantly less effort to use, and are safer because you can stay out of the direction that the pieces will fly. This wedge puts you in danger while using it. If it was designed for persons with physical limitations, the designer did a terrible job of actually evaluating the process of using the tool and considering the needs of those persons.

Try putting a tire around the logs, so when you break them they stay put

If you have ever chopped wood you know that thing is not only taking way too long to insert -but it will do you dirty every time one of the blades is pointing towards a big knot in the wood, which a lot of firewood have.

I love that wood he’s using a lot better split than wet live oak 😂

I like how he told us to think about the time of the set up and then dramatically straddled the log to “start it” like he couldn’t have done that standing and any faster. Then proceeds to conveniently cut out the retrieval and placement of the next logs with the regular axe from the video… smoooooth

Reminds me of a set of sentences: 'If you don't need it, it ain't for you. If it ain't for you, it ain't about you. If it ain't about you, it ain't for you. If it ain't for you, you don't need it.'

I haven't seen the first one yet, but I can infer that, whatever that wedge thing was supposed to do is the lumberjack equivalent of trying to re invent the wheel.

Seems like the kinda guy that would wear suspenders, but then cast them off his shoulders as a signal that he was working extra super hard.

The thing is i guess it should be sharpened. This is like trying to use an old dull knife to cut and complain about it not cutting because it’s not designed properly
