I definitely disagree with the idea that they didn’t explore Reuben enough I think it’s honestly better that they left little clues to who he and his girlfriend are by their tattoos and small pieces of dialogue they had. Adding mystery to their past worked for me.
@andrewreed4924

I think part of what worked about this movie, for me, was the fact that the whole film leads up to the realization at the end that Ruben has to learn to live with himself. Simple enough conceit, but I think the subtlety of the filmmaking and performances is what really drives it home. I don't agree with your criticisms of the writing, apart from the middle section not propelling the film as well as it could have. But the film is far from being didactic or one dimensional, and many of your issues with characterization I feel were more strengths than anything. We don't get an internal look at Ruben at all throughout the movie because he's incapable of introspection. He's only cleaned himself up from his addiction because of his girlfriend, becoming almost a crutch for him, and playing music is really his only method of emotional catharsis. He's so desperate to get back to those things just to avoid confronting himself and his thoughts, that he hastily decides to get the surgery only to realize that it doesn't actually solve anything. The ending of the film works so perfectly for me because it's his first true moment of introspection and actualization, and I love that the film chooses to leave us there to reflect on our own lives and our own relationship with ourselves, and to imagine what the rest of Ruben's life might look like now that he's reached this critical moment of self-discovery. Also, you seem to keep describing films like this, Nomadland, and Minari as "Oscar bait" which is kinda baffling to me. In a normal year where bigger studio films actually got released, almost none of the 2021 nominees would be getting awards attention. Go back 4-5 years and look at Oscar nominees like The Revenant, Spotlight, The Imitation Game, or Theory of Everything to find genuine Oscar bait (or this year's The Trial of the Chicago 7 which was a truly laughable attempt at appealing to Hollywood liberalism). Maybe one indie docu-drama would sneak into a Best Picture lineup here and there each year, but films like Sound of Metal and Nomadland are not even close to standard Oscar Bait in my opinion. Kinda feels like anything that has even a whiff of political or social commentary immediately rubs you the wrong way, which perhaps says more about you than it does about the films themselves.

Very valid arguments you have here. And honestly, on my first viewing, I was more inclined to agree with you on many of these points. But with a second viewing, the skeletal nature of things just wears thin for me, personally. I am not saying I want long monologues for Riz Ahmed to recite or anything. I like that he is a physical character who expresses very little through words. But I think there are ways to present external factors to his dilemma that could've challenged him and provided insight into how he handles tough situations. It would give his journey more of the grit and tangibility of a real journey for redefining ones self. I am more moved by films that express simplicity in ways where the silences carry real weight of the struggle in order for the self-discovery to hit home. But in order to do that, the crucial scenes of plot progression need to give you a little more to chew on for the overarching morals to feel earned. Otherwise it's just a one way ticket to rebirth in a way that waters down the sacrifices made to get to that point. But I am glad that it moved you, and I'm glad it is moving a lot of people. I just gotta be honest when it comes to my own opinion.

I appears you may have missed the point. Where Ruben wants to go after this is immaterial to him finding the ability to sit in stillness and just _be_ without feeling the need to go on to the next thing. Much of what you say resonates with me. The movie felt "on the nose" and simplistic for much of its runtime. For me, however, it's elevated in its last few moments. The character has a revelation, and with effective use of contrasting sound design, the film succeeds in putting us in his head. In those closing seconds, the particular is made universal and we glimpse a larger point about our shared struggle as human beings - the ceaseless quest for "improvement" does not make us happy and we could all benefit from a few moments of silence or mindfulness. So the film isn't really making the facile claim that we shouldn't try to "fix" problems such as deafness, but rather that the perpetual need to "fix" things that cannot be fixed is the wellspring of human suffering. It's the latter half of the serenity prayer, if you will. That ending powerfully refracted the foregoing moments, and I instantly forgave the film its rather one-note characterisations, which took on the flavour of a Buddhist parable for me.

I disagree that we didn’t get any sense of who Ruben is inside, or what he wants. I think it’s pretty clear that what he wants is to get back the life he had prior to his hearing loss. He’s constantly thinking about his old life, checking in on his girlfriend, thinking about selling the RV to pay for the surgery in order to get back to the life he feels he lost. I think his character is expertly and simply displayed when he goes into his quiet room for the first time when Paul Raci’s character tells him to sit and write. Ruben gets angry and smashes his donut with his fist, then almost immediately takes all the broken pieces of the donut and tries to reform it back together, almost instinctively. It’s pure visual storytelling at that point, what more could you ask for ?

I started following you almost 2 years ago and at first I thought that your opinions are different just for the sake of being different. But no, you really can explain every little thing you say and you can provide a solid argument for everything and I really admire you for that. As for sound of metal, I agree with you in some aspects and disagree in others. I really enjoyed this movie, eventhough that it lacks a little depth in the characters, I figured that that's the point of the movie. Like it is a slice of this character's life, it's here just to tell you about certain things that happened in this period of his life, other details aren't that importent to this story, at least in my opinion. It would have totally benefited from a real friend character that rubin can communicate with and that could provide a little more conflict in the movie, but I think the beauty of the movie is it's simplicity. It presents a very simple story and a conflict to the main character and it works throughout the runtime to resolve this one conflict. I really appreciate how it avoided a lot of the clichés that are shown in these kinds of movies and it really sticks to its narrative from start to the end. Yeah I think it can be more unique if it was approached from a different angle but I'm really satisfied from what was shown here. In a weird way, it really reminded me of the movie prisoners (2013) not in the main themes but in its concept. They both present a simple idea or a simple conflict and managed to flesh them out in a professional way (though I think prisoners had a little more meat to the bone). I really wanted to know how did you feel about the scene where Rubin's gf was singing with her father as it's my favorite scene in the movie. I would really like if you could recommend a similar movie but done in a better way in your opinion. Keep up the great work. Interesting review and viewer comments section. I used to struggle more often with my own reactions to films like these. It seems we’re witnessing an influx of docu-inspired dramas lately; films that aspire to find a sweet spot nestled somewhere between the quotidian and the profound. And perhaps therein lies the dilemma - their agenda may be all too transparent. Because when they don’t succeed, the results can seem clunky and contrived - and at their worst, can be utterly pretentious (the plastic bag blowing in the wind in American Beauty comes to mind). Granted, films like Tokyo Story, Pather Panchali, and Badlands are extremely high water marks and God bless anyone throwing their hat in that particular arena - and I mean that sincerely, I don’t begrudge any artist’s ambition in that respect (and I’m sure you don’t either). I was personally nonplussed by Nomadland (I mean, for what it is, it’s nice and McDormand always kicks ass), however I really warmed to Sound of Metal, probably because I felt its themes were a little closer to the curb and not totally reaching for a kind of ethereal somethingness out in the universe. It felt a little closer to something like Leave No Trace, although that 2018 film is the more successful since it keeps its modesty in check and bypasses any stylistic flourishes.

"with the main characer, Rubin, I get a major sense of what he's like externally but very little in terms of the internal" I almost feel like this plays into the themes of the film; themes of who are we really once very superficial attributes we use to define ourselves are taken away? I feel like we as the audience struggle with identifying Rubins internal character because he also struggles to identify it, I see the film as that exact journey

I enjoy your reviews, but I think this is a political disagreement on your part and less of a fully fledged criticism of the film. "The movie says that deafness is not a handicap. I mean yes it is, by definition." This comes from a lack of understanding of the deaf community. I'm not deaf, and I don't understand this fully either. But one important message is to show deaf people to the rest of the world, but not as weak and unable. If you watch Riz Ahmed interviews, he often states that deaf people are better equipped to truly listen, express themselves, and live. Consequently, there is something that we can all learn from deaf people as a result. There is obviously controversy with this and you can remain unconvinced by this. This is also controversial, but many members of the deaf community and deaf culture are proud to be deaf, refuse cochlear implants, and other hearing aids for their children. You can go further into this rabbit hole if you'd like. So I don't completely understand this either, nor do I want to glorify deafness. But I do think we can learn something from the deaf community, which is what the director probably set out to do. In fact, I don't think the director, Darius Marder, has a preconceived notion. I think he had a clear goal that goes against the status quo's preconceived notions of the deaf community. He provides good representation with real deaf actors that are fluent in ASL. Riz Ahmed had to go through real training in both drumming and ASL. So even if you think this film missed the mark, I don't think you can knock it for it's motivation which I think comes from a genuine and authentic place.

I really disagree with your interpretation of Reuben's arc pre deafness. You said that the deafness was in some way his salvation, but he had been clean for 4 years prior to going deaf, he had a successful career, partner and community. Deafness threatened his whole world and therefore sent him back on the path towards addiction (hence him being at a rehab facility I guess). Deafness isn't the destruction of a downward spiral, deafness was the destruction of what had saved him and the meaning of his life, hence his crisis. You also said 'deafness isn't a disability' and suggested it was a kinda daft plot point to have characters claiming it wasn't, but regardless of your PoV, people really do think that and it seems like a totally valid narrative devise to me. Don't mean to be too negative, love your channel, keep up the good work x

I saw this last Sunday in the theater and I believe that Joe (Paul Raci) was only disappointed with Ruben not so much because he got the surgery, but because he asked if he could continue living there. Maggie, you sort of pointed these things out, but had a different reaction than I did.

Like you said, the first third of the movie was the best. I thought the movie opened perfectly. There's some good scenes and shots here and there, and the different things they did with the sound was easily the best thing it had going for it. Not entirely sure if the movie was "Oscar-worthy". I also felt like they could've handled the deafness better. When someone loses their hearing, aren't they kinda not able to hear the tone of their voice? Shouldn't he have been talking too loud or too quiet at times?.. And this might be controversial, but I'm also not entirely sure if Riz's performance was Oscar-worthy either. He did a fine job, but it just didn't feel like anything special. It felt more like he got the nom solely for having to play a deaf character 🤷♂️

While I really enjoyed the layering that the director gives us in how deep rooted the main character’s addiction lies, how his self worth is all tied up with his love of music, his girlfriend, and his hearing ability, the underlying issue of the film is that the director never wants to add other characters in the mix who are not just reacting to what the main character is doing and that does hurt the film. The point of view of the camera is always the through the lens of the main character’s selfishness even when the character has reached the end of the film, no longer interested in his previous plans and is genuinely taking time for introspection. The inner substance needed is non-existent and I feel the film is kind of laughing at us like the main character laughs at the head of the rehab center during his first day of mandatory stillness in the study, going along with what the audience is asking for by putting on a facade of depth. The atmosphere of the movie carried it for me all the way throughout because, well, I am a sucker for atmosphere. I agree with all of Deepfocuslens analysis. Brava! A great review!

I think the director pulled back too much on showing deafness by cutting between muffled first person and normal sound. It would have been tough but better if the film switched to a silent picture with subtitles halfway in. That aside, what I really liked about movie was the honest fact that it's hard to survive a relationship if you are not equals in some way. Ruben making his choices and sacrifices because his bond with his girlfriend is through music, and their talents. When two people have a kind of superpower like being musician or celebrity or superhero ect, one becoming weakened and not being special anymore, you can be left behind.

This is (apparently) an experiential film - much like "cinematic video-games" put the onus on cutscenes over game-play.. it hardly ever turns out well. They are separate experiences (for now, pfft to VR)(short of an ARG) An exception, imo, is "Linger In Shadows" on PS3, but, it being the exception is "its a game you play as the editor of a surreal movie in 'real-time'." Interesting how an agenda'd film could be lackluster, yet be Oscar-bait for the gimmickry.. (I found this to be a helpful review)

Nice thoughts. Not sure about your theory that deafness is meant to be a purification from his previous lifestyle though. Where did you get this idea? Especially since you later say that deafness is indeed a handicap, which it is, then why would it be a cleansing? The film had its ups and downs. I do understand the insistence on part of the handicap community centre that not hearing is not a handicap. That kind of mentality is what gets people through things and it's an instinctive survival mechanism. What I completely disagree with was the way that this community guru was "helping" a recovering addict. As a psychologist, I can tell you that sticking somebody in an empty room is the exact opposite of what a person who's trying to overcome something needs. The right idea was working on the roof, repairing things, doing the group classes with the kids, etc. So yeah, that whole "sit quietly in a room" bit was preachy and completely absurd.

Your comparison between the now and the past is fair comment but as far as 2021 I think it is one of the better indie films particularly Riz Ahmed who is very powerful - sign language is difficult if you haven't experienced that in your life

So far I've agreed with every single review and criticism of yours..I'm often afraid to say the things you say etc. But you're brave. I found the film not engaging enough. Great performance by Riz Ahmed though. Wonder what you think of Nolan.

If you like Riz Ahmed, please watch Four Lions. It's the only film about Jihadi terrorists that will make you laugh and cry. Also, it's director Chris Morris is a genius of satire.

I struggled with the fact that movie seemed to have a vendetta-message that surgery is bad. So they just rag doll this poor guy like a modern day book of Job because he wants to hear.... anyone else feel this way?

6:10 my exact thought when I was watching, it was an obvious woke thing to say. However I did like the film and felt Ruben's struggle and his "tragedy". I agree that another deaf character next to ruben would've added more depth to the matter. This was better than Nomadland imo.

MS.MAGGIE,Please do Runaway train movie,i presume you may like very much this film indeed,or i could be wrong...at least some mention, like,Did you watched it maybe, you know something of this film? I THINK YOULL MISS SOMETHING IMPORTANT BY IGNORING THIS MOVIE ,RUNAWAY TRAIN,ANDREI KONCHALOVSKY, WITH JON VOIGHT,ERIC ROBERTS,REBECCA DE MORNAY, AN AWESOME POWERFUL MOVIE...DONT MISS IT MS MAGGIE, FOR ME THAT FILM IS ONE OF THE PEAKS OF CINEMA,BASED ON A FORGOTTEN SCRIPT BY AKIRA KUROSAWA!!! You could be thankful for this if you havent seen it yet...or i could be wrong.......AND NOW I GIVE UP WITH THIS,MS MAGGIE,HOPING YOU WOULD ATTAIN Someday maybe MY HUMBLE REQUEST TO SOMETHING TRULY GOOD...truly deep, THAT IS «RUNAWAY TRAIN».i would be certainly interested in your words about that one...Thank you.

I'm getting tired of lazy film makers resorting to look what life is like on the other side of the tracks, never mind story, character development, great dialogue etc but we can make it look and sound pretty!

I prefer simplicity, but it's hard to pull off and not every film gets it right. There's shallow simplicity and there's profound simplicity. I haven't seen the film, but framing increasing deafness as a path to enlightenment sounds offensive. Acceptance of deafness is a byproduct of having no means to restore hearing. If one had the choice, a deaf person would indeed jump at the chance to restore hearing. I may watch it ironically.

Also, he got the surgery. It didn’t work. It was better to be deaf than to have that really distorted hearing.

I feel you and I are on the same wavelength in the sense that we see the good parts and even the potential of this movie but at the same time realize that at the end of the day it's exactly what it is. Potential. Personally, I felt like there could have been more to explore instead of just regurgitating the same ideas differently throughout the film. To me (and this will piss off a lot of people) the movie's overt simplicity is a facade to make it seem like there is more to the movie than what we see in the surface (when really there isn't). The movie relies on the audience to come up with their own interpretations to give it a sense of depth when in reality it's a very simple story.
