Reading different things for different languages. Getting into the Readle graded reading app for my more beginner languages and also using it a bit for Japanese…surprisingly a lot of higher level newspaper words like biodegradable and medical certificate and STD 😁 - except they don’t have a Readle app for Korean. So for that language going back and forth in Korean reading from 3 different sources: 1. T’Choupi (Preschool picture book series) 2. Kiwi Korean (Comprehensible input YT channel) 3. TTMIK Graded Reader app.

@@janelle.loves.languages wow that's some high level vocab for a beginning graded reader! What do you think of the TTMIk Graded Reader app? I'm not planning on putting money into a paid Korean graded reader app since I could just buy content for native speakers that suits my level, but I've been so curious what the app experience is like! Part of me is jealous I didn't have this when I was learning Korean, but then a bigger part of me knows that my past broke-college-student self was way too frugal to spend money on paid language learning apps 😂

@@SomedayKorean Oh I should have explained better. I'm reading A1 material on Readle for my beginner languages, but the advanced Japanese vocabulary was from their N2 articles (they don't have N1 articles yet). I am happy to report that that the N2 material on Readle IS higher than Satori Readers highest level. Also, I think higher than the app that DuChinese made for Japanese. The TTMIK app is a bit on the boring side haha And it doesn't allow you to click on every word so that leaves me to look up a lot of words in a regular dictionary... sadly. I just need graded material so badly in Korean that I am willing to pay for it for the time being. I'm planning on ditching it as soon as I can.

@@janelle.loves.languages Oh now that look back at your original comment, I see you specified both beginner langs and Japanese separately haha. that makes a lot more sense! 😆 I was like "dang those are difficult topics to break down with simple vocab" lol Awesome that they have such a wide range of content though! Bummer that the TTMIK app is boring and doesn't allow for every word to be defined. Now that I've experienced apps like Satori Reader and Du Chinese that allow for every single word to be defined, whenever I encounter apps/sites that just define some words, I'm always left wanting more. I've been spoiled!

I’ve tried making flashcards based on what I watch/read so many times and I just never go back to actually do them 😅 Also, I’ve been meaning to tell you that you’ve definitely inspired me to try and start reading in Korean again! I’m on my second book since the beginning of the year (both are by 게이고 히가시노), and while I’m far from being the confident reader I want to be, I definitely think that my reading skills are improving

Yeah I very rarely make flashcards, and I almost never maintain them long-term.... I always lose interest after a few days. The only time I've been successful reviewing flashcards regularly for a long period of time was during my 5 months of reading Japanese every day, and the only reason I could do it then was because the Satori Reader app made the flashcards for me (and automatically included the context of the sentence the word was found in). And even then, the second I stopped using that app every day, I got way behind on my flashcard reviews, felt overwhelmed, and basically didn't touch them for several months 😂 Glad to hear that I offered a bit of inspiration! 😊 I've definitely been inspired by your videos in the past as well. And I've only read this one book this year, so it sounds like you've read more Korean than me so far this year! 😂 It definitely takes quite a bit of reading to build up that reading speed and confidence... 😅

I’ve been watching a lot of your videos lately so just wanted to say thank you for motivating me to make language learning a part of my daily life. You are so relatable! I would love to do this sort of project (without the time restraint 😅). I’m currently making my way through the TTMIK graded reader app but would love to read more physical books. Do you have any recommendations for places I can find Korean books that will ship internationally (I’m in the UK)?
@SomedayKorean

Thanks so much! 😊 How do you like the TTMIK graded reader app? I've heard about it, but haven't tried it. As for international purchases of Korean books... honestly, I don't really have experience buying things internationally -- I didn't buy any Korean books until I came to Korea in person, so I can't give recs to services that I've personally tried. I typically buy from Kyobo bookstore, and it seems like they do offer international shipping on some items apparently, but I have no idea how much they charge for it. After some googling I found some other sites that offer the service of shipping Korean books available at a variety of stores to you, but again, I've never used them so I can't vouch for quality or pricing, unfortunately. I believe Kyobo offers ebooks, though, which could be a more cost-friendly option!

I’m loving the app so far. Similar to how you could spot the vocab in the book as you went along, I’m finding how they’ve repeated words in different contexts is really helping to reinforce retention. I’m nowhere near your level in Korean so I would imagine you’d breeze through! 😅 Thank you so much for the advice on the book recs as well. 😊 p.s. I am also intrigued to know about your other project!!

What a great challenge project! I am reading The Little Prince in Korean - 여린 왕자 - and there are a TON of words in there that I don't know. In all honesty it is way beyond my level but I'm doing it with my study partner. I was going to make a vocab deck but I know a lot of the words won't stick since they are not currently words I would use. However, I found a pre-existing one on Memrise and that's helpful for learning some vocab ahead of the chapter we are tackling (sadly it doesn't help me with the grammar I don't know yet so I'm grateful my study buddy is much further ahead than me!)

Yeah, I think if you're going to specifically learn ALL the vocab, it should be for a text doesn't overwhelm you too much, or else it turns from a fun challenge to just a stressful overwhelming one. I remember when I first tried reading Harry Potter (which was like 8 years ago), I literally would get overwhelmed after a paragraph or two of wading through vocab and grammar. That pre-existing deck idea is a great one! Saves a lot of time, and it's a good way to prime your brain to understand words for a topic that's a bit above your level. That's also nice that you have a study buddy to keep you motivated with challenging material!

At what level was your literacy in each of your languages when you started reading in them? These days ive been focusing on manga translations for slovenian, theres a nice magazine that used to run here and i was lucky enough to pickup a whole set for cheap. My reading level is somewhere a2-b1 now. Trying to read previously was a headache as i haven't studied a slavic language before
@SomedayKorean

What do you mean by literacy exactly? I generally use that term to mean reading/writing ability, and since I didn't have strong reading skills until I started reading regularly, I would say my literacy was very weak when I started reading in all of my languages until I had a decent amount of practice. If you mean general language ability, then I started at a much more intermediate level for Korean than my other two languages. I started reading children's books in Korean roughly 7-8 years into my language journey when I was maybe low-mid intermediate. Prior to that I mostly just listened to grammar podcasts and watched dramas to learn, but at that time I made in-person Korean friends and started reading, so my skills shot up very quickly. For Mandarin, I read little bits and pieces in my classes throughout high school and college, but I didn't start reading content on my own until a few years ago using Du Chinese, and my vocab knowledge at that point was much lower than when I started reading for Korean. I started reading Japanese using Satori Reader at basically a beginner level (maybe low A2?), but since it has a built-in dictionary and the grammar is very similar to Korean, it was manageable. I would say I'm VERY far off from being able to read native content for Mandarin or Japanese without the built-in dictionaries that those apps have.

@@SomedayKorean Thank you for taking the time to write that wonderfully in-depth reply. Yes I meant reading/writing ability. I should've clarified I was referring to reading outside of textbook examples like you mentioned content. I've never had an app with dictionary for any languages I study except now for Japanese. If you say it really made a difference then I might get over my apprehension and get started reading with Satori soon :3 Good studies to you!

Ah vocabulary. How to make it stick. I think the best way is to use it in conversation but who has conversation partners handy to go do that? I don't know how many words I've looked up and later forgotten. Unbelievable amounts. I'm putting Anki on hold and focusing on immersion. I've noticed that if I'm reading a book, keeping a list of the vocabulary from the book to study while I'm reading the book works great. As soon as I finish the book, not so much. For obvious reasons that vocabulary is just not so relevant anymore and I don't want to review it. And I inevitably will forget it. Unless I try to force it with Anki but then I'm really still forgetting it but just relearning it over and over the hard way. Basically I think it's a bad idea to review stuff in Anki to brute force it into your head. The moment this word isn't relevant to your current situation it just becomes an ineffective grind. I haven't made the effort to re-read books for a while but I think it would be a great activity. Oh, I've had the experience you described of re-reading (or re-watching) something I haven't seen in ages and not remembering what happens next because I forgot it lol. It's a bit depressing but it makes re-reading or re-watching stuff more fun and gives you motivation to do so.

Yeah, like you said, I've also found that I'm only motivated to look at that vocab while I'm reading the book, and after that I lose interest 😂 I don't try to force it -- I just move on to the next activity pulling my interest and trust that at least a few of the words will stick, or at least be more primed to stick the next time I encounter it and need to look it up. It was so bizarre how the majority of the book I remembered the general plot, and then the last two chapters I had literally no idea what was going to happen 😂 I was probably really tired when I read those chapters last time, but as you mentioned, it did make those chapters more exciting to read this time around ☺

Based on your unknown amount of words per page, the book was definitely above 90% comprehensible possibly very close to 95% - 98% comprehensible so that’s good. I personally wouldn’t do flash cards because I’ve seen no research indicating they boost acquisition. But yeah seems like a good level of book for you.
@paulwalther5237

Flash cards do boost my acquisition at least temporarily. She said she didn't forget words after she had looked them up for the remainder of the book. I doubt that would have been her experience had she not put some time into doing the flash cards etc. But after the book is done and this vocabulary becomes less relevant.. yeah.. reviewing the flash cards becomes an exercise in repetitive failure. I'm curious to see how many words she retains long term. I'm guessing it's just a handful. But that's better than nothing which is what she would have if she hadn't done this.

Like I mentioned at the end of the video, I'm not planning on doing the flashcards long-term. When I would review the flashcards, I would try to recall the phrasing of the sentence they were in, and I did find that mental retrieval of context to be helpful at least anecdotally for remembering the meaning of the words. i would usually do the review of the flashcards approximately 15 min after reading, which I found was extremely helpful for mentally recalling the sentences the vocab was used in and attaching the meaning of that word to its context. When I waited longer or overnight, it was much more difficult to recall those contexts and therefore the meanings of words. While usually while reading books like these, I find myself seeing a word and thinking "oh crap, what did that word mean again?" and looking it up multiple times, this time, every single time a new word/phrase was repeated, I could recognize it and its meaning without needing a refresher. That being said, I do agree that actually just seeing the words used in context again would be even more helpful than just the plain word/phrase and meaning. That's why in the future, I would spend less time just reviewing flashcards and more time re-reading the sections I had read the next day (or something similar) to reinforce those words in their contexts, However, I think I might continue the flashcard review immediately after reading, because like I mentioned, I found that quick reminder of the new words I had learned shortly after reading to be immensely helpful for retention of that word, its meaning, and its context in the story.

@@paulwalther5237 Yes I agree flashcards do work in the short-term. She proved this in her video. However from research on second language acquisition, we know that it's a subconscious process that makes words stick. Long term (6 months, 1 year, 2 years, etc.) those words from the flashcards will be forgotten. They do not enter the subconscious. And for all the mental work and time waste they have caused to create them, that's not worth it. Better to let words penetrate your subconscious almost effortlessly by reading and listening to things you can understand.
@paulwalther5237

@@janelle.loves.languages Yeah I don’t think they work well ever the long term either. I mean, they do work to an extent but they’re inefficient. The forgetting curve is over rated. If the forgetting curve really worked I would get a perfect retention rate in Anki and I definitely do not.
