It's 2024 - more than three years since the Boeing 737 MAX was re-certified following two fatal accidents in 2018 and 2019. Though there have been a few minor production defects exposed between then and now, the plane has operated largely without incident, and it gets pretty good reviews from both passengers and crew alike. My flight from San Diego to Orlando on Alaska Flight 320 (New Year's Day) was proof that the MAX is indeed a smooth ride - but as many of you know, only days later, Alaska 1282 happened. Amazingly no one was hurt/injured, and the crew did a great job getting the plane on the ground. But the incident exposed potential quality control issues at Boeing and its key suppliers... leading the FAA to restrict future production of the MAX until they can get under the hood and make sure all manufacturing protocols are being followed. Now to be clear I don't want to point the finger at anyone, especially as the NTSB investigation is still ongoing, but it certainly is frustrating to both airlines and passengers when planes need to be grounded.
Fortunately, as of time of publishing Alaska is set to resume flights on the MAX 9, but as for Boeing... well, they're far from out of the woods...
In the mean time, come along and let's see what Alaska has to offer up front on a 4 hour flight across the country!!
