Love that you felt / saw how cool slab city is. I lead a ride from San Diego once a year, and stop at Bombay Beach and visit the artworks that get added every year. You should Also look up Desert X Art Instilations that happen in the same area with artists from all over the world every 2 years. Think Amanda is missing the point.

Dude! You were in my backyard! I live in indio and have been out to Salvation Mountain many times. I had the privilege of meeting and chatting with Leonard several times. I even got a personal tour from him. He was definitely a unique person. I was always amazed at how he could live out in the open desert year round. Temps over 120' are not uncommon. It's nice to see the foundation is maintaining his message. Happy trails!

Big cities are broken. We got out of Toronto (Canadians are SO nice) after 2 people were shoved in front of subways and a third was doused with gasoline and set on fire. Toronto is full of homeless encampments under the freeways and in city parks because the shelters are filthy. I'll take my chances in Slab city any day.

Slab City and its people are pretty neat, TBH. Venture there with respect and you'll get respect right back. Go there and act like a DB, you'll get checked real fast, and leave without your belongings. :) Darwin, CA is another neat little place. It's relatively close to Cerro Gordo. It, too, is a town without laws. Most of its residents are wealthy hippies who the are live-let live type of folks. Peter Santenello did an episode on the town and its people.

Hyperbole much? I watched a video where one of the "freedom lovers" talked about what an inconvenience it was to have to spend an entire day just to sign up for food stamps. Imagine, being annoyed at spending one single day to get free groceries the rest of your life. In fact, he said almost everyone out there is on food stamps. Freedom and peaceful? As long as their living off the backs of Americans who are willing to work hard and pay their taxes so these folks can eat. What a joke.

So how about this, stay three days alone. Just three days. You can also maybe ask what happens to people when their neighbors disagree with them. Mankind's own conscience is a law unto himself. Even in a place like this without State law enforcement, every individual would feel violated if stolen from, angry if murdered, betrayed if lied to, and so on and so forth. People don't need the State to tell them right and wrong. Conscience isn't cultural.

I think most people in the RV community know about the Slab. The slabs are old foundations. Its an old army base. Its an interesting town but with all the things that have happened over the years, most stay away. But you can tell by all the RVs, a lot end up there. Some of the residents are there to disappear though. Several youtubers claim bad experiences, presumably because of bringing camera around. How much is true an how much is just youtubers trying to invent content is hard to say. Several other places in the US where you can move in an set up camp for free that are much safer though.

Back in the day, I had some friends who would winter over in Slab City....snowbirds. One of them said that was where all of the RVs in Independence Day came from, he got paid $5 an hour in cash for driving back & forth across a stretch of desert several times along with everyone else. And food from the craft service table. I went through that scene frame by frame, his pickup w/camper was on screen for about half a second...lol.
