Fidgeting is just the natural reality of how humans are meant to live and rest. People see it as a negative thing, but really sitting motionless in one position is only possible with hyper-normal comfortable modern furniture. You're supposed to be constantly moving when you're awake. As they say, the best position is the next position. The reality of floor living is that your'e going to be changing positions every few minutes. That's a good thing.

I was sitting with my legs crossed and folded and had my computer setup on a small coffee table. I can get comfortable(it was likely after I put my bed cushions on the floor) sitting on the floor, but the result of that is that my legs don't get circulation and I couldn't stand up for 0.5-1 minutes, that was the case for both having my legs crossed and folded.

Chairs are among the 4 inventions bad for our bodies: beds, chairs, sitting toilets and shoes. Sitting on the floor, or anything not chair, causes you to sit more dynamically. Move more, shift your center of gravity and engage muscles - especially core and reflexive ones - that improve stability. We aren't meant to be cushioned to disability. Ditch over-comfort.

Hanging is the BEST chiropractic doctor. It opens up the discs and re-aligns the spine. It's great for people who get slipped discs, bulged disc, or worst, pinched nerves in the spine, or just people who lift a lot of heavy things day to day. It was one of the exercises that helped me re-align the spine and start healing the spine. My dad even built a pull up bar in his back yard, that's how beneficial it is.

I STRONGLY support the purchase of rings or any pull up equipment for EVERYONE, but especially people who suffer from spine injuries or pinched nerves. It was a game changer for me and my dad. And much less $ than going to a chiropractor or surgeon who have the potential of making things WORST if they are too harsh or don't know what they are doing. And yes, I've heard of chiropractors who have injured their clients and made them crippled.

Incorporating movement into your daily routine is so much easier than trying to carve out exercise time. I have a floor bed and a floor desk, and I also have a freestanding pull-up bar. I do draw the line at living and dining rooms though for my guests' sake.
@natashatheresa
3 ай бұрын
Yes I agree it’s easier to incorporate movement in daily routine! For me, in my old house I used to have one couch but then also a pillow mountain so it was the best of both worlds for the living room. In my kitchen I actually had a regular height dining table and then a smaller floor dining table off to the side depending on our mood. I might do something similar but for now we do have some regular dining seating if we end up having guests. But I don’t have many people I’d invite over anyway so I guess we are fine lollllllllll

Ive been trying to find ways to incorporate movement into my life more and this statement has been eye opening. I unfortunately struggle with circulation in my legs so even sitting criss cross for 2 minutes makes my legs numb, but i never thought to consider that if i incorporate movement more in different ways than i have been thinking maybe it will help. When I first started at my standing desk I was only able to stand for about 10 to 15 minutes and I was tired. Over the course of months I came to the point where I wanted and was able to stand eight hours, the whole work shift. Was wonderful. I actually think standing is better than sitting on the ground. But that's just my body not being comfortable sitting for a long time. The hours I sleep and lay in bed reading is the time that my Body is resting.

I randomly stumbled upon your video and really love the way you present yourself-- it's really authentic and refreshing! I do have to say though, as someone who has a lot of back problems, many of my chiropractors have said that sitting cross legged on the floor actually isn't good for you because the pressure accumulates at the base of your spine/lower back and there's not as much blood flow going through your legs over long periods of time. I imagine moving around definitely helps but I hope no one in the comments gets dissuaded from a standard setup with a chair as well. Your setup honestly looks fun, and I would try it if I didn't have so many issues myself.

But I felt like, perhaps there were other things I needed ot look into which could be the source of my back pain. Personally, for me, I started exploring barefoot shoes and over the course of a year, my knees, ankles, and my lower back all seemed to get stronger. my lingering back pain faded into distant memory when it had been a companion for decade. It made me think more intentionally about how i move my body and how everything is connected from my toes all the way up to my head. I could write a whol eessay about how little changes I've made over the years have produced the limber 40 year old you see in this video LOLLLLLLL. of course, results may vary and one thing doesn't work for all, but as I sit here on my newly acquired zafu cushion, with my legs stretched undearneath my desk, i can see how it's helping my posture. In a few moments I'll switch it up as well. I realized that part of my issue was i was spending sooo much time sitting - i would drive for many hours each week for commutes and for church purposes, I'd sit at my office desk hours on end barely moving. I had to find ways to counteract this, and while I worked out regularly and lifted weights, it really wasnt' enough to undo my normal actions throughout each day. So that is why I started modifying how i do things, at least the things within my control. I thank you for being here and for sharing your knowledge as well! Ideally, I want to be able to do a mix of floor sitting, sitting at a chair, AND standing. That would be ideal to just keep mixing it up hehehe!

I ditched my desk and big office chair long ago😅 I thought I have to have them but always ended at the floor as in my childhood😂 Hubby just told why do keep they if you are not using them? So know when I rearranged the bedroom I sit on a carpet on the floor with 2 types of portable mini-desks for my notebook to choose and have a giant teddy-bear as a support for my back against a shelf (or just a giant pillow😅). Thoughtworthy is a great YT channel . . . as is your channel and excellent content! As someone who lives simply, it is a joy to observe how you are finding the sweet spot of needing less and less furnishings and finding what suits your lifestyle. The way you are getting up from the floor and sitting back down is wonderful for your being. Ability to do that is considered a real bonus for me and my senior friends. Your future self will thank you. 😃 Olympic rings have my vote! I take any chance I get to hang from the playground bars. "They creakin'" fo' sho! I share this sentiment looking at my friends and coworkers. Coming from an pacific islander background all the seniors in the village (70yo and up) are super flexible and mobile well beyond that age. Everyone sat on the floor and slept on futons or tatamis. "Floor Desk" or coffee table? Easier to clean + more room for activities! This is also one of the reasons there is a strict "NO WEARING SHOES IN THE HOUSE" policy.

I've been doing furniture free living for a few years, too. I'm thinking of going back to chairs, if I'm honest, because sitting on the floor is really starting to hurt my ankles (they press into the ground when I sit). I also didn't foresee the problem of the dog snoozing in the space directly in front of my desk, when I need to use it. That's a non issue when the space in front of your desk has a chair on it. I'm also thinking of putting in, not a bed, but a stage about the size of a plywood sheet, with storage below it. This would be my new sleeping place at night. I want this because 1. I'm often at risk of being stepped on, while sleeping on the floor. and 2. I've had knee injuries in the past, and now am getting older. Either issue by itself is reason to consider occasional mobility issues, where a raised "bed" would be a lifesaver! That said, furniture free living has eliminated my back pain, improved some neglected muscles, as well as my posture (I keep my tv/computer screen at face level), and kept me limber. Overall I'm very glad I did this!

Hi, fellow hypermobile person here and first time viewer! I too have switched to having my desks low where I can and a Japanese futon. Beware of stretching without relaxing muscles, because our ligaments will just keep stretching. It's likely that low back tightness is keeping you from putting your foot behind your head, not a lack of stretching! In the hypermobile body, ligaments never really shrink, muscles just get tight instead. As a cheaper alternative to rings that are less likely to dislocate your shoulders or your son's, I recommend leaning your weight on the edge of a sturdy counter and holding yourself up with your shoulders. Your back can still relax and stretch that little bit, but you don't have that potential to accidentally relax your shoulders all the way and have them pop out, like they did when I was a kid in gymnastics. 😅

I laughed out loud when I saw you take off n cut the table legs to make them closer to floor. 😃😃😃 For months I am trying to convince my husband to shorten the dining table height by cutting the legs by 2/3rd or get a floor dining table :) After all being Indians it is in our genes to do everything sitting on floor, right from morning exercise, daily worship, studying, book-keeping, cooking, eating, reading scriptures in the afternoon in front of the home alter, sleeping, literally everything! Bending back and forth to eat is healthier than sitting up straight and gulp. Even our toilets are squat ones like Japanese. That's why colon cancer is not that common in eastern world compared to Western world. I am trying to go back to traditional ways as much as possible in day-to-day routine as well as a spiritual life goal (after being in the rat race of modern life for 2 decades) because they have proven to be most healthy and have long lasting effect on our mental health too.
