It wasn't just two signs. She said at the beginning she was expecting at least 3, and throughout the video we saw her trying to teach him signs for everything. More, finish, ball, car, food, book. Also there's no "all of it" when referring to a language. No one speaks "all" of a language. Baby sign language is usually simplified from ASL, when a sign normally requires fine motor skills, but that's not really necessary for any of these words.

My son was delayed in speech so i started teaching him basic signs around your baby's age. It took more than a week but he learned please and thank you. More. Eat. Drink. Play. Ball. Cookie. Milk. Mom and dad. It was his primary way to communicate until he began to speak at three. He was a lot less stressed. More happy. You just have to be consistent. As you speak you sign. Also shows with baby signs will help.

Teaching your baby sign language starts right at infancy, not when your baby is basically able to feed themselves hand to mouth. No, it starts right away before they can ever speak or make a sound. Make the repetitive motions associated with the actions, the infant will learn to connect the two, and then as your baby grows one day everything will just CLICK and all your hard work pays off. TRUST ME. IT WORKS. I taught my daughter this method. It wasn’t easy, but the payoff was well worth it.

As an S-LP, I'd argue you can start teaching your child sign language at any age especially if they have expressive language difficulties and become frustrated. The pairing of sign language with spoken language does not hinder spoken language production. All academic research has shown that it aids in the child's understanding and production of language. You don't know if a child will have an expressive language disorder when they are first born. If they have hearing loss then yes, you'd know to start right away (if that's the route the parents want to take) however for developmental language delay, delayed talkers, or children with expressive language delay/problems you won't know until 11-12 month mark.

I think the reason this wasn't more successful was in large part because it was added so late in his development. The mom said herself in the video that he tends not to use signs when he's already figured out some other way to communicate his needs, especially when his family continues to respond to his other ways of communicating. That's not a bad thing of course; the most important thing is that he's able to communicate his needs, and the signs were just meant to help him do that. In general, baby sign language is more useful with younger children, who may resort to crying as a primary mode of communication, since they don't have the ability to verbally convey their needs yet. Speech requires a lot of fine motor skills, much more than moving your arms in simplified signs. But this child already had a fairly functional system worked out. Additionally, in this case, partially because of the lack of need, the family wasn't very committed in actually teaching him the signs. Regardless, language acquisition of any kind takes time. This could actually be compared to training a dog to respond to verbal or signed commands. I believe the average dog is about as smart as a two year old human baby, at least in terms of understanding words.

I’m not sure cause my little sister turned two in September and she absolutely loves to learn signs, like I taught her mom, tiger, shoes and socks- she knows all the words but she still gets really excited to do the signs. So I’m guessing maybe the mom really isn’t that enthusiastic with the signs so the baby doesn’t want to do it either, or it’s just the babies personal choice?

I work in the infant class at a Daycare center and we always teach the children 2 signs a week, it does wonders for their communication. It's so nice to see them using their signs to communicate when they aren't able to speak yet. I would definitely use sign language if I had children of my own, it's so rewarding when you see the children telling you they are hungry or when they want water. It makes it so easy on us to figure out why they are crying. You just have to be consistent with the signs, I've seen children as young as 8 months already signing words such as Eat, More, Please, and All Done. :)

I love this video so much! Why? Because when I was a baby, I had/have a cleft lip and cleft palate. So I couldn't talk because I had a cleft lip and cleft palate, but, I learned sign-language so I could do that instead of just trying to say what I want. Like I learned to sign simple phrases like, play, eat, drink, the simple signs like that! It was pretty cool. For my cleft lip and palate, I had surgery for it when I was 5 months old (you can actually see the scar going from my upper lip to my right nostril). Because of that surgery, I wasn't aloud to touch my mouth/nose (where they did the surgery), so I had these things that my mum calls "no-no's" and they were like big gloves for my arms/hands so I couldn't touch my mouth XD just thought that was funny to put in this comment :)

I've noticed Buzzfeed does this a lot. They act like they're going to give something a shot, make a quick and half-hearted (sometimes mocking) attempt, and then quit and act like they don't understand the point. It's incredibly frustrating and gives the audience nothing to take away about the subject matter. It also makes them look like they have absolutely zero insight into their own behaviors and attitudes.

I've been doing basic signs with my toddler since he was around 10 months old. He's two now and can sign a lot but is very stubborn . it does help though because he has a speech delay. He knows hot, cold, more, wait, rain, please, shoes, socks, eat, water, banana, all done, milk, juice, stop, help, go, clean, coat, drink, help more, yes, no, bye, thank you, sorry and some others. He can't always say the words that he can sign but we work on both speech and sign together.

We started incorporating sign language dvds (Baby Signing Time by Two Little Hands) pretty much as soon as we got home from the hospital. All of a sudden at around 9 months old, my daughter started actually using signs (baby, hat, more, eat, milk, sleep) and talking came very shortly after. At 12 months she was consistently using at least 10 signs and spoke around 50 words. She's now 19 months and speaks in 2-3 word sentences, says at least 160 words, and has increased her signing vocab too. We're working on potty training and Baby Signing Time has a DVD for that too. All in all, the videos really helped in addition to just talking to my child and reading really helped build her vocabulary and verbal communication. Kids are suoer smart, and even if you think they aren't learning something, all of a sudden they start doing it and you see they've been learning all along.

this was very cute and useful but I think it's important to point out that they have to really know what the sign means to get them to use it effectively. Perhaps it was just a bad example in the video - but you were signing "eat" BEFORE he was actually eating. The key is to sign it WHEN he's eating. It To him, the sign "eat" meant "I'll hold the food here and not give it to you." Once you see him actually use the sign, then you can encourage him to do it when he wants to eat and reward him for using the sign. You could also just model "more" when he seems to want more. Remember teaching communication is about modeling - most babies will pick up signs if you just do them while you're talking -- or INSTEAD of talking, sometimes, so they can focus on the signs. They don't need to know that the "eat" sign has to go with the sound of the word "eat". The key to language acquisition is linking the symbol (the word, the sign, etc) to the actual meaning of the symbol. And it's never too late to start, but you can start wayyyy before 11 months. :) My first daughter - you know, when I was an alpha first time mom, knew a couple signs by 6 months and over a dozen by a year. Helped SO MUCH with communication!

I’m amazed at the backlash for her trying this when he’s in “talking age”. SO WHAT? In case you all didn’t know, it’s still a language and there are so many people who can’t talk and can only communicate in sign. I’m sure they would appreciate having more people to communicate with. People always want deaf people to learn to talk but those of us who can speak shouldn’t learn to sign? How selfish to want to stay in a bubble only with the people who communicate the way you do. My daughter is growing up in an English/Spanish speaking family and I would like to start teaching her to sign ASL (American) & LSM (Mexican) as well.

ASL is a language. The language of the Deaf Community. I am really having hard time believing that you took ONLY a week to try to teach your baby ASL. It takes your and your husband effort to learn ASL first and then teach it to your baby. How can you expect your son to sign back at you when you are not consistently signing to him? He needs to be exposed to ASL consistently if you want him to understand that what you are signing is actually language and has meaning. He is young enough to benefit from signing if you are taking the correct approach. Remember, deaf babies use ASL - it is their natural language. Don't insult the Deaf community but brushing this experience off because it takes time and effort ( that you don't have. Are you going to try to teach your baby another language? French or Spanish? Remember ...it takes time and consistency. Good Luck!

I taught my baby sign language and it helped so much. A lady that worked at the store thought he was deaf.

It would have been interesting to see how this would have resulted, had my parents tried to teach me to sign as a baby. I was a child quicker mentally than physically, who spoke at 10 months, but walked at 14, in the reverse of the usual progression. (I have Asperger's Syndrome, and this is typical. ) I must wonder how this would have affected my ability to learn signing, or for that matter, vice versa.

I think all children should be taught sign. Maybe hearing children don’t need to learn everything that a non-hearing child would learn but enough to communicate with them. You never know who your children may meet that are hearing impaired or have a disability. Sign really is a universal language. ❤️❤️😘😘🥰🥰

My mum taught me signs by accident (she works w disabled adults and some might need sign cues when you talk to them) and I don’t remember much because I was so young. But when I see sign language I actually have an easy time understanding it? Like I read Matt Fractions Hawkeye comics and I understood what was signed 100% haha, it’s weird

My mom did the same thing with me from about 3 months to about 11 months and it was really great and useful and I knew how to say anything I wanted, like any of my toys or food or blanket but my speech became delayed because my brain didn't start working on my speech because I could get anything I wanted with sign language. But when I did start to talk, I had heard my mom repeat the words I was signing so many times, it was a breeze for my to learn to say them by myself and by the time I was like 2 and a half, I knew how to say my name, my mom's name, and the entire alphabet as well as sign it. Definetly some pros and cons but over all I think it really helps. Plus I remember everything and I built upon my skills and can have a basic conversation in sign language now

We did this for our son. Only downfall was when we were trying to get him to talk (he didn't really want to start talking til he was 3 because he could sign) Basically the doctor said to ignore the sign language and get him to use words. It was a rough few weeks but it was worth having him communicate with us when he was younger. He's about to be 10 and still remembers all of it.

I taught my kids sign language, and had a speech therapist tell me that is was a bad idea. That it would make them not want to speak. But I'm teaching my 7 month old sign language. I think it's fine if you're also speaking and signing. They did just fine. It's hard when people tell you how to parent and say you're doing it wrong..

Some thinks you can’t put a time frame on such as learning languages. Things click differently for different ppl at different times and it can cause frustration when one is learning in the given time frame. Time frames are good for getting started on many tasks but I love that they tried so keep going. The baby is learning many many MANY more things than you can possibly imagine! And one should not get frustrated or upset with the lack of progress when introducing new education such as a language because what can end up happening if not careful is the parent teacher may overlook the many new things learned by the child and not reward or praise them for the things the child learned on its own because it’s not what was on the parents agenda or list of things to learn.

all-done/finished is one of the easiest signs to learn for little ones in my opinion as an ASL tutor and aunt. But I'm curious to know if she was teaching using baby sign or ASL, which are completely different.

I would do 1 sign a week and start with something my baby needed everyday, like food or milk or water. Do my baby would remember it quicker the more they wanted it.

I found interesting that those words/signs been taught are not really learned until late. 10 months old is more like no, bye-bye, yes and the rest is just normal interaction, in this case, with ASL.

My cousin is now about 14 months and she has been learning sign language for a while and has been doing very good. It’s a good way since she can’t talk. She now understands most simple words like how to get things or say sorry.

kids are very smart and it is easier for them to learn other language. My almost 2 years old grandson does sing language too and I talk to him in Spanish and his mom only in English. I know a 2 years old girl and she knows 3 and sing language too. The sing language helps the kids a lot, when my grandson does not know how to say something an English Or Spanish he used sing language.
