I prefer a cruise with older people, civilized atmosphere, history, culture. European flavor, no screaming kids, no drunk 20 somethings having a party in the hall. You get the idea.

Just because someone is on a particular cruise line that caters to families, doesn’t mean you will always have screaming kids and drunk people. I’ve been on 12 cruises and haven’t experienced that. Granted, I avoid spring break cruises and attempt to avoid the summer. I’m early sixties but I don’t feel old so I enjoy fun activities. But fortunately there are cruise lines for everyone.

We just got back from an 11 day Caribbean cruise on Holland. Six of us ranged between 55-62 with 2 additional in their 70s. I was skeptical due to not wanting huge crowds of drunken travelers. Pleasantly surprised - this was a relaxing vacation with adults that know how to conduct themselves around others. Maybe I'm just an old soul. Had such a good time we booked a Mediterranean cruise for later this year.

Reassured me about why I like HAL. The two thumbs down images on the cover drew me in to watch what it was all about, but I was happy to learn it wasn’t negative at all. HAL just fits the way we like to cruise. Now once things are back to normal we will look forward to returning to cruising on HAL. We don’t want any port restrictions and want full liberty to explore on our own. If we are to pay good money for a cruise holiday, we want a stress free experience.

HA really impressed us for their generosity. We had 30days Asian Cruise with HA starting on 1/16/2020 at Singapore. The Pandemic started before our second 15 days of journal, our ship was rejected by all the countries to port all at their harbour. Our ship was moving half way to each country before we were rejected by the country. We had to change our flight back home from Shanghai to Tokyo, from Tokyo to Thailand. Finally, HA took over the return flights for over 1500 passengers. They didn't just arrange our flights, they paid for us. In the meantime when we still enjoyed the great food and entertainment on the ship, they announced that we would get full refund of the second half of the cruise, they gave each of us an equal amount of future cruise credit on top of the refund. We were also exempted from paying the daily tips for the second 15 days. We have never seen such generosity by any cruise line. Our ship finally was accepted to disembark by Cambodia government. Their prime minister came to the port to welcome us. Even today, we appreciate the kindness of Cambodia and the generosity of Holland America. We will take their cruise as much as we can once the pandemic is over. Holland America is very reliable and trustful in the difficult time to their passengers!!

We just returned last Sunday from the Koningsdam Mexican Riviera cruise. It was our third cruise with HAL, and also our third cruise on the Koningsdam. It was a nice, laid back cruise for us. The passenger count was way down, I’m sure due to continued fear of the pandemic and the restrictions and hoops one has to jump through caused by it. That said, as “seasoned” Koningsdam cruisers, we thoroughly enjoyed the different atmosphere resulting from the uncrowned public areas and extra attention and pampering provided by the staff. We plan to cruise with HAL again,

The food in the Main Dining Room has always been superb in my opinion. We miss the smaller ships like the Statendam and Zaandam, but our next cruise is aboard the Rotterdam. The Verandah cabins have never disappointed us. We have not been to the B.B. King Lounge but Billboard On Board has always kept us entertained and is usually near the casino. We appreciate the mature crowd and especially the destination. The "Dam" ships never disappoint. The one downside, is the internet has always been slow. We use the internet on the final cruise day to check in for our flight home. Unfortunately the internet has always been lackluster. Otherwise we love the "Dam" ships. Rotterdam here we come!

They did a great job prepping us for our stops. We did have some children on board. The biggest hassle we had was getting to the dining room as you had to go up and over a no access "hump" in the ship to make it back to the correct floor.

Quieter, more refined/luxurious feeling. Onboard shopping was nice where I picked up some really nice Tommy Bahama clothing. I really enjoyed brunch in the main dining room and the filets I had were all excellent. I really enjoyed Pinnacle Grille and the Lido buffet was just ok for me…wasn’t bad but I didn’t feel it was stellar either but there are lots of choices and the salad station was really nice too.( I REALLY loved the egg salad). We got the drink package and I felt all the drinks I had were mixed and had proper pours..I REALLY enjoyed the Amaretto sour the bar next to the casino made…it was excellent. Also listening to the dueling pianos was awesome..I don’t know who the lady was that was singing but man she was awesome. We did the game show Let’s Make A Deal and that was a total blast although the system crashed right after the first guy played but that’s ok…stuff happens and HAL reimbursed us for all 3 game cards no questions asked. I would absolutely cruise HAL again for just that feeling of being a little more luxurious than some of the other lines. I’m hoping to get on an MSC cruise in 2024 on the Seascape as that boat looks incredible.

I just returned from the Mexican Riviera cruise with HAL on the Koningsdam a few days ago. It was a wonderful experience. The food was really good, and the excursions were fantastic. The only drawback we found was the lack of late night snack options. All the food locations close at 11:30 pm and the only choice at that point is the limited late night room service options. If you are looking for a party ship then this is not it, but there was absolutely plenty to do. Every staff member on the ship was unbelievably helpful, friendly and they went above and beyond to make sure people were happy. We are middle aged but did notice that the travelers do seems to skew a bit more mature, but that was not an issue for us as everyone seemed to want to have a good time. I actually felt like there was a good mix of adult ages, and very few children (which is a plus for me). Overall very positive experience and I hope you have an amazing time.

I'm 54 and usually feel like I'm at the midrange age group...many older and some younger (My 31 year old son drew quite a few comments about how nice it was to see someone so young cruising with HA). We both prefer HA because we like the more relaxing atmosphere, the food (agree tamarind is delish!), the variety of live music, the destinations/excursions, and the lack of young children. They also have the best casino player perks I've come across and I get to cruise for less than I can on any budget line...plus, I pay no upcharge when I cruise solo. I highly recommend giving this line a try!!

I’m 61 and I have an 11-year-old and my family just took a seven day Alaskan cruise on Holland America’s Eurodam. We are tech savvy from Silicon Valley, and definitely used the app a lot. We tried to take advantage of most everything that was offered, including the kids club. The arcade was very small, and the kids club activities were very unexciting… But just getting the kids together where they can talk and plan trips to the pool was sufficient. Very few children were on the ship. We ate mostly at the Lido market, which was extremely disappointing. I’ll leave it at that. We enjoyed each of the ports of call (not including Victoria, because that’s just an international stopover requirement), and did a lot of hiking and sightseeing, so that part was good. The clientele on the cruise ship were definitely older, and on top of that, there were a lot of mobility issues. Of course, we are compassionate, but it was very hard to get food at the Lido market (and there were many older passengers that were quite grumpy shall we say-As there was a lot for them to navigate, and the staff did not help). The cabin crew worked very hard, and we loved them, but the dining staff did not leave their stations to even provide beverages ( to save you several trips, back-and-forth to get beverages …unless you tip them and then they’re all over you 😒). The decor was extremely dated unlike the Holland America Cruise ship, Rotterdam. You can see this in a KZitem video by Ilana S. on “life well cruised.” I really expected more out of the entertainment. The enrichment programs I attended had very low turnouts; the musicals were a cacophony; the trivia shows were fun, but only lasted 30 minutes; the music was entertaining, but for those people who want something different, there wasn’t a lot offered. In addition, their shopping area was basically one gift shop with souvenirs and Aggressive jewelry vendors. We don’t want a party atmosphere, but would like to get on a bigger ship, where you can actually take a walk on deck or have a bigger variety of activities. As far as artwork, I will quote a 20 something on board “ it’s just a bunch of paintings of a white man” …. The hallways and cabins were extremely dated, and the dark carpets and wood made them look even smaller and dirtier. Thank God we had a balcony to brighten it up a bit. Appreciate your show and all of its information. I provided my comments to Holland America, via their requested survey. We won’t be returning

I just returned from a 7 day Caribbean cruise on the Rotterdam and it was great. I’m 60 and would say I was slightly above average age. That being said, there was plenty of good music and things to do on the ship. I don’t need a bunch of 20 something’s drinking till 3am. It was NOT stuffy or pretentious. The food was very good (Rudi’s was fantastic) though service was a bit slow all around.

I worked on board Princess Cruises ships for several years and last year went on a HAL ,7 day round-trip, Vancouver/Alaska cruise and loved it. Ship was Zuiderdam, which was a perfect ship in my opinion. Staff were fantastic and the deck 9 Lido Market eating area (Bistro) was perfect. No, they don't have full-on production shows, but what they had was enjoyable. I could not fault them.

Thank you. I cruised HAL and Celebrity. I used to like the piano bar on the Statendam-class ships and generally the standards played and dancing in the lounges. That's really what I enjoyed most about ships. On Celebrity there was the Rendezvous Lounge and an aft lounge with different names that played standards as well and had dancing. I'm glad to see the different music venues on this ship and would definitely be mostly in the standards bar and the Classical music areas. I don't like what I saw on the newest class of Celebrity ships, a bunch of restaurants and very few lounges. Decor is nice on both and I guess the clientele is every so slightly younger on Celebrity. But I'm not looking for young as I'm around the same age as you are. So, what you presented on here sounds good for Holland America.

It sounds like the way we like to cruise. We don’t need slides and excessive noise. Good restaurants, casino, and a room with a balcony and we are happy.

I just left the Konigsdam This morning (12-17-22) on their Mexican itinerary. I experienced the following problems: 1) The food in the MDR rarely was as described. Significant components on the menu were missing and when called to their attention, it was the "supply chain" which is hard to believe in San Diego. The number of menu selections were much more limited than either Carnival or Royal Caribbean. 2) For a Dutch themed line, the desserts were mediocre. Many of them appeared to be purchased from vendors than produced in house. 3) The service was neither efficient or particularly friendly. For example, you always had to ask for coffee or juice. Then you had to ask for cream and sugar with your coffee. You would get dessert but not a fork to eat with it. Also, they wanted you to order everything at one time. Once the food was delivered, you would not ever see the waiter again. They would not check back to see if you were happy with your meal. Compared with prior cruises, I have to say that I felt neglected. 4) On the Lido, there were nine stations of food. However, more often than not, there was "theme creep" meaning that many of the stations were offering pretty much the same old things. And only three desserts in the Lido. I will admit that while many of the Lido employees were relative "newbies" by their own description (1st or 2nd contract), what they lacked in experience, they made up for with their "can do" attitudes and enthusiasm. Many experienced HAL cruisers told us that we should not judge HAL by this one cruise as they agreed with these points. They said that prior cruises were a lot better food wise. I hope so. The entertainment was by far the best of the four cruises that I have been on. They have definitely hired the right professionals to pull it off.

My second cruise was on HAL to Alaska in the early 2000s my first year of college. I loved it and didn't realize its reputation for olds when one vendor at Port voiced his surprise that I and my partner at the time was cruising on HAL. He said " I'm so surprised you two are cruising with them...you know what they say Royal Caribbean is for the newly wed and HAL is for the NEARLY DEAD!!!" It stuck with me.

I turn 70 this year and HAL fits my needs perfectly. I don’t like party ships like Carnival nor do I like being on a ship with a lot of kids! I think Holland fits the bill for me perfectly! I also like Oceania and have cruised with them also.

Here is a tip on Holland America; their "Have it All" package says it covers crew appreciation but only tips on beverages are included you still have to pay $16 a day crew appreciation for cabin crew etc. I was so disappointed when I was out in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and found out for the 47 days I will be traveling that I will be paying $752 in tips that I was not expecting.

I appreciate this video as I've seen other people comment negatively about HAL and their food experience. We are heading to Alaska this summer on HAL and are anticipating a great experience both on and off board the ship. If possible, can you do a video on what activities exist other than formal entertainment? I'd like to know what passengers do on HAL when they have a bit of spare time.

I think this underscores very clearly that you need to go on the cruise line that suits your expectations. My wife and I are Holland America cruisers now as we get older, I am 65. We have been on all of the main line cruise lines from Cunard to Carnival. The party boats with lots of children are no longer our cup of tea. It would pay those complainers to look at your video about choosing a cruise line for your needs, it would be well their time.

Love HAL! Music Walk, enrichment activities, itineraries, food are all wonderful. However, without a doubt, I think they have the best staff of any of the lines! Always so well trained and focused toward exceptional customer service. We will never change to another line.

Thought about cruising HL several times, however friends we met on a Princess cruise mentioned they loved their previous HL journey (the Med) except the majority of guests were from the US. Our holiday preference is always for an eclectic list of passengers, preferably European and Far East Asian.

As a Diamond Member on RCCL, the majority of my cruises have been on Royal Caribbean. But as I have gotten older, I have noticed that RCCL offers less things that I am interested in on the whole. Having taken HAL several times before, and after watching this video, I think I need to give them another go.

I’m not old (59) but I’m also not looking for a party boat. HAL gives us a classic cruise experience without the dress code issues. Except for one obnoxious instance the kids on a HAL ship are well behaved and not a distraction. I didn’t find the cruises we’ve been on boring. The Music Walk on our last cruise was awesome and I didn’t get to all the venues. Docking next to a Celebrity ship at one port proved that I’m not interested in a cruise that tries to turn the dock into a dance club. Food? Zero complaints. Staff? Excellent. Alaska access? Best of the best. When I go back on board it’ll be a HAL cruise, for sure.

I usually calculate the age groups in thirds. The average age around the world is 30. So 0-30 is early or young. 31-60 is middle aged and 61-90 is Old Age (90+ is the rare, REVERE and Enjoy while you can because soon they will die category)

My first Alaska cruise was in 2013 out of Vancouver BC on the Sapphire Princess. While waiting to embark, there was a HAL ship, Zuiderdam, next to ours which left first. I liked the ship's style and paint scheme, the classic lines. Wondered what it would be like to sail on one of their ships. My first HAL cruise was the Panama Canal out of Florida. Was looking at three cruise lines and selected HAL as they disembarked in San Diego where I live. Other two went up to Long Beach. Didn't want an after cruise shuttle home. Loved my time on the ship, was never board. Enjoyed good concerts at Lincoln Center stage and shows in the main area. Since then I've been on several more HAL cruises. In 2019 it was a European cruise including St Petersburgh. Our ship was the Zuiderdam. First HAL ship I saw in Vancouver back in 2013. Had the most enjoyable time. Have another HAL cruise this October, 26-day Mediterranean area. Should be a blast. Ship is the Oosterdam. Another one of HAL's Dam ships. hehehe

Just got off a 30 day cruise on the oosterdam from Buenos Aires around South America, then up the coast and through the Panama Canal over to Fort Lauderdale. We chose it for this itinerary and also for the classical music quartet that used to be a tradition on America. After we got on board we found out that they deleted the quartet entirely. The food in the dining room was actually abysmal. About 10 meals actually had to be sent back they were so bad. Most of the time the meals were passable. Maybe five times it was very good. The people on the ship were absolutely ancient cripples in wheelchairs or people with weak knees who could barely step onto a bus. we are 68 but these people were likely in their eighties to 90s. Three times during this cruise had to be rescued from the ship because they were so sick. we had a good time despite Holland Americas failures, but it’s unlikely we ever get on the Holland America cruise again.
