Unless I'm missing something, my almost 6 year old August Smart Lock already does what Apple is hoping to have ready next year, it's called Auto-Unlock. Works great for me. 90% of the time the door is unlocked by the time I get to it. The other 10% I have to wait maybe 5 seconds for it to catch up.

The difference with using the U1 chip is that it’s way more accurate, and doesn’t necessarily rely on geolocation to unlock on arrival. You could be in your yard, but still in range of the lock, and walking back up to it would auto-unlock it, rather than having to essentialy leave the bluetooth range/zone of the lock with current solutions. It also knows which side of the lock you are, so it won’t do this when you’re inside.

Unfortunately not a direct integration with Home Assistant right now that I'm aware of. What I'm using for my Schlage Encode Plus is a HomeBridge switch that turns on when the locks is closed and turns off when the lock is open. That way I can at least run automation in Home Assistant if the lock is open or closed. It's been working extremely well and I would just use that same setup for the Lockly. Hopefully Lockly gets Matter support eventually.

The palm detecting lock sounds more interesting to me out of the two, but I have to wonder what would prevent it from working. Gloves, whether for fashion or winter weather? Accidentally getting ketchup or something on your hands from a messy lunch, or similarly basically any dirty hands? If it goes off of the veins in your hands, does it get confused if it's a hot or cold day and there's more or less blood flow in your hands? What if you get a mild cut or bruise on your hand? Granted as long as you can enter a numeric combination you can get in anyways, so maybe I'm overthinking it.

An important point with the Lockly is that you can wire it in to the power and do not have to worry about the battery going flat. A key issue with a short term rental in another city a long way from where you live. A real problem if you have not been there for months and have guests arriving and battery goes flat. Just install a powerpoint with an inbuilt USB socket next to the door and run a standard USB cable from the powerpoint to the charging socket on the battery and keep it fully charged. Then cycle the two rechargeable batteries twice a year to keep them fresh.
@KimmoJaskari
Ай бұрын
I haven't really done any research beyond the video but the Lockly seems to have an actual key slot. So if all else fails with the powered part you can still get in. The Phillips doesn't have any such thing visible at least, if that is fully dependent on batteries, it's only a matter of time before you stand there waving your hand and going nowhere. I certainly hope there's some other mechanism that isn't immediately visible.

I will give any device without standard AA or AAA batteries a pass. Regardless of whether they supply extras, manufacturer-specific rechargeable lithium batteries will eventually degrade and have to be replaced. When the supplier eventually no longer supports the model you may have to replace the entire lock. There's a method to their madness. I hope thousands of others echo this so that the manufacturers take notice.

I'd love to combine these smart locks with a regular security camera that has person recognition. If the camera detects me and the lock detects my palm or face, good to go. I'd also love to have the active side of the lock on the wall, instead of on the door. Batteries for devices like this suck, no matter how convenient they are. About the security tests: try pictures taken from further away, i.e. a picture of most of your arm and most of your upper body. I'd love to see if the security still is good when you fill the entire POV of the lock's camera with a picture, so it has no outside clues that it's looking at a picture. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if some of these companies just programmed in something that the lock won't open if they see a rectangle, like an ipad or a picture printed on a sheet of paper.
