This is as good as any product evaluation we've ever seen an artist conduct! You did an amazing job designing and executing these tests. We would love to see the lightfastness evaluations! We are so glad you mentioned the cost to manufacturers of conducting tests with special equipment to conform to ASTM D6901-15 standards for colored pencils. The Colored Pencil Society of America (CPSA) has devised its own tests for artist-consumers, which are available to members, along with the organization's own results.

Definitely get the purples and dark greens and the super pale blues. I’m in love with them and use them all the time. I was perfectly happy with a combination of Caren dache and polychromos, but lightfast have something to offer on top, so now I use all three. What a shame! I have learned though, not to buy full sets. I never use all the colours. Now I get a handful, and if I like them I get the colours I typically use. I won’t buy full sets again, it’s actually not cost effective for me even if the cost per pencil looks good on paper.

I've just taken advantage of Black Friday deals and got a great price on 120 Polychromos and 100 Lightfast for my art stuff, I have Chromaflow for my fun projects and colouring books and I still have my Crayola which was my staple for a long time that I think I'll keep for nostalgia and just doodles now I have invested in other pencils. When deciding on the Derwent ranges, I actually brought one of each pencil for the different lines in the same/similar colour to see how they handled, and I actually found a couple that didn't feel nice to hold, I've learned I like smaller and smooth pencil barrel.

As a newbie - Black Widows work great for burnishing + blending + color range and the Brutfuner square is still the best value, hands-down. I have a very hard grip though so that affects things. Also a special nod to Kalour 280 - they aren't the best, but for the price, the number of colors you get can help with different shades without relying too heavily on layers and blends.

for broken wax barrels, microwave the pencil for about 15 seconds or so, on possibly 5 sec increments then let the pencil sit to cool down and repair itself. You can also sit them in a hot car or by the sunny window until they seem hot enough that the core melted enough to repair itself after cooling down.

I am extremely impressed by your dedication to finding the answer! It was a relief to see arrtex on the list for good budget. Makes it feel like I got a good investment. It will be a long time before I could drop money on a caran d'ache set. But I tend towards markers so I may save the big investments for those. For your own sanity, do not attempt this with markers anytime soon. Or ever. Maybe just wait a long time before comparing anything else. I'm sure you could find a years worth of videos in the data you collected on these pencils.

I really think it depends on your technique. I'm very, very light-handed and prefer Polychromos and Pablos over your Winners without hesitation. Your 10 Layers are my 30 Layers. I can blend the Polychromos and Pablos to my hearts content, as i'm so lighthanded. Layering is a given with these. Between 40-50 Layers, which i sometimes want and need to get the depth i want. Prismacolors on the other hand i tend to find smeary/greasy and don't like the waxy feel overall. They are very expensive in the long run, because even i eat through these pencils like they're butter. The Luminance are ok, but i do find them a bit overpriced as i can get the same or very similar results with other, cheaper brands. Some Luminance are definitely more on the scratchy-side at least in my set. EdIt: The above said, the amount of time and effort you put into this video is amazing. Don't want to take that away. It's just from my experience there are different pencils for different techniques and i find it hard to give a universal "fits all techniques" solution.

Yes to lightfastness testing. It's one of the biggest factors in whether I buy an art supply or not.

I absolutely love Woomer colored pencils! I found them on Amazon for $31.99, I think, a new brand, and decided to try them. To me, they feel exactly like Prismacolor pencils. They are creamy, lay down easily, blend beautifully, the colors are gorgeous. If they ever come out with more colors I will be buying them immediately. I have quite a few of very expensive brands, but I always reach for the Prismas first, and now Woomers. They came in a nice tin, but I put them in a pencil case immediately. I'm disabled, do all my artwork while on my recliner (where I pretty much live 24/7), and wrestling a tin and trays are too much. I haven't watched the whole video yet, but since these are so new, I don't think you tried these. I guess I'll find out. I wish I could contact the manufacturer to tell them directly how much I love these pencils and to beg for more colors. They are that good.

This was a wild, wide ride! I applaud you for this effort, it was an astonishing amount of work to condense in a single video. Sharing your impressions is immensely valuable for any artist looking to make an informed purchase. Both hobbyists AND professionals can find something in here! I don't use coloured pencils at all in my current work, but I now know which pencils to invest in, should I ever require a set. I'm especially looking forward to the lightfastness tests!

I wanted to retire my pencils in favor of my new love, watercolor…but I can’t. I still love them. This was a wonderful video for me. Thanks. I’m just a dabbler ( and old to boot) and some times I just want the color presented in my drawlings to refer to latter. And I did a color swatch of my measly 90 regular colored pencils which helped my in color choices. So they are here to stay. Thanks again for the inspiration.

I have the complete set of 100 Derwent Lightfast. Cost a fortune ($450 Canadian, and that was 25% off). They come in a beautiful wooden box. Amazing pencils. My favourite are still the Inktense, which of course blend with water , but once they dry they don't move when wet. I also love the Koh-i-Noor woodless, both plain and aquarelle. The plain are about $20 for a set of 24. No wood, so you're paying for straight pigment. Layer and blend beautifully. The aquarelles were $90 for 48. I love the way they go onto the paper and blend.

As far as I know I think Prisma colors are best. The colors are so pigmented, also the drawings look realistic 😍
