(TMI alert) Ben Folds used a "tack piano" on "Songs of Love", a normal piano that has been altered by inserting thumbtacks or other metallic objects into the felt hammers to give the instrument the sort of tonality you hear on the soundtrack of old cowboy movies when a stranger in town shoulders his way through the swinging doors into a hostile barroom. Ben also used it on (the great) "Not The Same" on "Rockin' The Suburbs", among other tracks. See also "Killer Queen". And "Care of Cell 44" by the Zombies. When "Songs of Love" was recorded I think Ben was still using a "customized" Kimball upright, which -- fun fact !-- he later auctioned in 2009 to raise funds for the victims of the terrible bush fires in Victoria.

I have blind tested cables for a very long time (years), and so many different cables I can't remember. However it always end up with the Supra EFF-l as the best, ALWAYS. The Supra EFF-l makes it easy to hear differences in the music coming from different CD-players or other sources. A clean clear-sounding cable at a very low price.

thanks for the review - i've used supra speaker cables for a few years and recently swopped out my homebrew (but high quality) xlr cables for the dac-xlr interconnect. i think your impressions of the audio qualities of the various price points is spot on (having demoed them myself) and i wish i could have stretched to get the EFF-iXLR but alas my local dealer didn't have the length I needed and with the suppy chain being all screwed up I didn't want to wait a few more months. Thanks for zeroing in on the difference on those cymbals though - I may have to upgrade again soon (whenever they come back in stock) !

99.9% convinced by this excellent review; I go for the EFF IXLR....but then; I read a Dutch review where the Supra does not come out that great in a larger group of cables. In this review, the Oehlbach NF214 seems much better. Audio life is hell. 😉 Unfortunately, it is difficult for us as a customer to purchase several cables to compare, so I will order the EFF XLR, also because of the price. Thanks for the good explanation

great video. its made me think about my cable situation. i have a right mixture in my systems and some are not even branded. going to start on my headphone systems 1st as i am sure that is where i am likely to hear most differnce, if any. (my ears are nearly 60!!). as my Qutest has only 1 set of outputs , i do use a switch box (not ideal i know) so i will need 3 sets. i am now settled as far as dac, amps and headphones go so i am just tweaking the last bit now.

My Hifi dealer let my try two sorts of XLR interconnects - the Chord Shawline and the Supra Dual. Within my system the A/B testing was done after like 10 seconds -- the super-expensive Chord Shawline won hands down, so I bit the bullet. Anyway, hope these cables last a lifetime. :-)

Were they burnt in ! You need to use them for 400 plus hours to align the crystals. It also charges the skin of the cable, which is very important. Make sure you try them in different directions also, you have to go with the cable grain structure. Only way you can do this is by extensive listening.

Sounds like the standard Supra cables are a good choice for most people. I’m waiting on an 8 metre usb, it will be interesting to see if it performs ok over that length. Got nothing to test it it with other than two old ears. I have a Chord Company Signature digital cable that actually divides itself into two cables at the plugs. Got no idea what the theory of that is. It looked fancy and was half price so I thought why not 😂
@PassionforSound

Hope you enjoy your Supra USB! The dividing USB cable will be to split the signal and power lines I expect. This is done to prevent noisy USB power affecting the audio
@aussie8114

@@PassionforSound No the digital cable I mentioned that divides into two cables is a digital coaxial. I can’t see why it would divide into two. It’s just a single RCA plug at each end but with two cables as the run. Makes no sense to me, but it looks interesting.

Yes, that's true. I'm glad there are those who appreciate them. I've heard enough cables over the years to know that an expensive cable isn't automatically better, but that doesn't mean they're all snake oil
@djhmax09

@@PassionforSound indeed, just because a certain product doesn't work well on one system doesn't mean it won't work well on another. so I think snake oil is much less common than people realize. it's just a matter of trial and error which I feel more people need to realize about this hobby. there's no one size fits all because if there was, hobbies like these don't need to exist.

I have alway believed in cables, the more expensive the better they sound. To get the best from your system you need to spend 3 times on cables than your system cost. Well that’s what they said at my local hifi shop.
@djhmax09
2 жыл бұрын
@@r423sdex if I were you I wouldn't put much weight into that. Not every expensive cable will work for each system. They all have their own sonic characteristics that can tilt a system a certain way. In other words, it's all about synergy. Cables, in my view, enhance synergy. To accomplish that, you need to know what kind of sound you want from your system and trial error. Not one cable fits all otherwise, we wouldn't have such a variety of cable type, materials, and geometry.

Great video! I have a 35’ run to a subwoofer. Does connecting two xlr cables together compromise the integrity?
@PassionforSound
Жыл бұрын
It shouldn't have any significant impact. Some might argue that adding extra connectors creates a junction where there is a slight shift in impedance which theoretically influences the signal transmission, but I'd say that's splitting hairs and isn't likely going to be audible, particularly through a sub.

people should check actual science before buying nonsense . How the brain processes sound will explain why people will hear any effect suggested to them . But if one chooses to buy without checking the science of electricity through a wire, or without a clue about the science of human hearing , feel free. when recording studios bother with anything other than standard good wiring , you will see that special cable use advertised to the moon and back , if you just want to follow the money.
