I'm a Southern Californian about a third of the way through a 3 and 1/2 year residence in Japan. I should mention that there are differences between domestic and international service with respect to JAL and ANA. Aside from meal service, the lounges serving most Japanese Airports are very different when comparing one in the domestic area versus international terminals/zones. ANA and JAL international lounges usually have enhanced food and beverage offerings, and showers (there are a few exceptions when it comes to showers). When flying from Haneda Tokyo Airport to/from Sapporo Chitose or Osaka Itami, both JAL and ANA normally use wide-body aircraft frequently because of the volume of business. And the airport kiosks for JAL and ANA usually have a foreign language option (especially English), just like many ticket kiosks for trains/subways, bank ATM's, etc., in major cities. Also, a final hint - if your middle name is on the airline reservation, you normally need to enter the first and last name contiguously (without a space) on the airline website or airport kiosk (and there will not be a line for a middle name entry). The Japanese do use middle names, so using a "separate" middle name online or at a check-in kiosk is confusing. By the way, I definitely prefer to use Japanese carriers when returning home to the US, or flying anywhere else to/from Japan. Their efficient and quick boarding process has always amazed me.

ANA became a Skytrax 5 star airline a few years before JAL did. For 2 carriers from the same country to be part of that club is incredible because there are only 10 airlines in that ranking.

Having flown both JAL and ANA from LAX to Tokyo, hands down JAL is better. More space in economy, better & larger selection for movies/TV shows, food was better (they gave us bloody yoshinoya on my flight, so good), and service was better. Also ANA is the only airline I've taken where I was lucky enough to get the whole row to myself, when this has happened in the past I lay down across the seats and take a nap with no issues, on my ANA flight I was woken up and told I couldn't do that, which knocked down ANA some points for me.

When I flight from Tokyo to Hochiminh city (Vietnam) ANA accidentally overbooked my seat so their solution is upgrade my seat to business with no extra fee. It not a thing that happens everyday but it showed that they always give the best solution when something went wrong. When I experienced similar issue in other plane some time they ask me for small fee to upgrade the seat not much but also not very happy 🙄 Also one thing that I don’t think ANA do well is drinks service. I’m only 17 but the one who ask me which drink I want she didn’t ask about my age to check will I able to drink wine. I had to tell her my age and i cannot drink alcohol but then when she back to ask do I want another drink she still asking if I want wine 😬 Other than that Ana’s food really good on both economic and business.

Almost all the Airports in Japan have observation decks, even on regional ones. Also if you ever happen to pass by Fukuoka airport, Both ends of the runway have crossroads just passing close to the end. You can see the landing flights a few meters above your head if you go there.

ANA:T2. I would say the gates monopoly by them. And they even have staff holding a plate, asking one by one which flight you fly. Also their boarding arrangement is better.

I enjoy flying both internationally. My two cents worth: In economy and Premium economy, JAL seating is better. 42” in PE and I believe 34” in regular economy. Catering, however, is better on ANA. In business, catering is better on JAL. The Japanese menu is usually very good. Seatwise, I don’t know how it does it, but the 2-3-2 configuration in JAL’s business class affords me the best quality sleep of any plane. Haven’t tried ANA’s The Room, so can’t comment on that. But ANA’s more traditional business class seat doesn’t have a footwell made for guys with size 12 feet.

Good informative video. But I think the best comparison you can do with these two airlines is if you flew long distance flight, allows each airlines to show their full range of services. Another is as much as you got an upgrade plane from ANA, my experience flying with ANA domestically compared to your JAL one is the same. I do fly with ANA to Japan from Sydney, but I know JAL is no slouch and thought this video would be a long distance comparison between the two. Look forward to see the long distance comparison video between the two airlines.

Boarding on plane 10-15 minute before takeoff is only possible for domestic flights in Japan! If you are taking international flights, 30-40 minutes are expected because if passengers receive SSSS on their boarding pass, security staffs at gate will thoroughly check your bags and body again even after you went through TSA. Yup, I experienced that when I was in Narita, on my way back to SFO. That was number 1 reason for taking more boarding time on international flights.

Thanks for sharing. FYI both JAL and ANA use high density wide bodied aircraft such as the 787 and 777 for their domestic routes. It’s therefore normal to see the 777-200 and 777-300 on the Tokyo to Osaka run. The ANA aircraft you were on is not an international configuration. When the 747s were still in service, you could fly super high density ANA or JAL 747s on a 1 hour flight between Osaka and Tokyo, for example.
