I Danny, I'm in Qld Australia. I have only 31 roses from 1 colour, 2 colours & a few have 3 colours. They are not much different to orchids. They love full sun , fertiliser- cow - seaweed & water about the same as my orchids. A good prune as spring arrives. I'm about to give 6 roses to a friend ( not the plant) spring my lounge room is full of roses & the smell wow beautiful. Don't stress they are easy to grow.

If you can manage to get one I recommend the "Easy Does It" floribunda rose. It's not a miniature but it is resistant to hot temperatures. I have been growing it in a container since this spring and it got to over 100°F this summer. It's still growing roses! And they're an interesting blend of pink/orange and the smell incredible.

We often have the red/white miniature rose in the garden section of our local home improvement store. They are absolutely beautiful but also soooo prone to get a gazillion of aphids in no-time. Anyhow, good luck with these beautiful roses!

Oh those roses are so gorgeous and healthy! I had roses in my garden when I lived in Connecticut and had no problems growing them, even with the cold winters as long as I properly mounded up the bushes to protect them from the cold. I had one named Double Delight that was red and cream blooms. Here in north central Florida, not so much, and I think there is something in the soil that attacks the roots 😮. The roses grow and flower beautifully for several years and then the bush suddenly dries up and dies over a few weeks 😢 one was a variegated red and cream swirl and each individual rose looked and another called Cinco de Mayo was a mix of rosy rusty purple and looked different as the sunlight changed over the day…. I think I just have to accept it and be willing to buy new roses every few years. Wishing you the best of luck with your new garden ❤

So glad you’re able to enjoy your love of roses now! I would call the pink/white rose a bicolor. Don’t know if that’s the correct term but it’s what I always heard.

Not sure if this will help but I thought I'd post anyway since our roses do well in the garden! I'm from South Africa, and my area I do believe is considered sub-tropical. We have mild winters compared to other parts of the world. We never get snow, for example, and I think it only drops into the minus Celcius at night during winter. Winter days are actually kind of warm sometimes, and they're dry. We have hot rainy Summers, cool to warm Springs, cool Autumns. We have different kinds of roses in our garden, in an area where they get quite a bit of sun but also some shade, and it's one of the few plants we have that do really well. We prune them every year before Spring and they love a good prune, makes them grow so many fowers. Our soil is quite red, I think it's very rich in iron. Not sure if that'll help at all, but maybe someone will find it useful!

That's interesting! I think that Danny could have some problems during summer: in Southern Italy you easily see 36-42 degrees Celsius in July and August and its too much for roses. I even have sometimes problems in Northern Italy, again in July and August, when temperatures reach 32-36 degrees (and stay over 30 degrees from 10:00a.m. until 21:00). Cyprus seems to be warmer than southern Italy, so roses could have a hard time from June until September... I'm curious to see if they thrive!

Why not try desert roses? I love them. So far seem very easy to grow/maintain.

100% they won’t grow well indoors if at all. Roses appreciate full sun with some afternoon shade. Roses are also heavy feeders but you want to be cautious about using granular fertilizer as it can build up in the soil in the pot and burn the roots. Good luck Danny!

“Standard rose” is a tree rose (a rose bush on top of a long woody stem). I would call a bigger rose a “shrub rose”, especially if it is not a miniature rose.

To add onto the organic fertilisers and how they don't work for orchids. The organic nitrogen on Bio balance Max is most likely Urea Nitrogen which need beneficial bacteria and enzymes in the soil to help break it down, which is distinctly lacking in epiphytic plants and if they do have the beneficial bacteria and enzymes, its very low vs soil levels. Usual potting mixes for sale are sterilised which doesnt help with the whole Urea Nitrogen and orchids issue. Its why I recommend to look at the list of fertilisers and pick one thats low or has no Urea nitrogen for orchids.

I lived in Arizona for some years.. shade made the whole difference.. but Orris did VERY well, without shade, there.. i grew everything from basils to tomatoes to lavenders, but watering almost everyday was a real chore..
