Carl Cooper I agree. I would say that 1982 , 1983, 1986,1987 was the best years for music. The Disco Soul sound changed more from lush string arrangements of the late 70s to a more synth sound, but the disco funk was still there in the productions. What gets me about the late 70s early 80s music is the emphasis on melody, , keyboards and the bass groove. Rnb dance music 35 years ago sounded more like Jazz , with the long instrumentals in mid section of the song. It was beautiful! music that will stand the test of time. All the greats , Nile and Bernard, The Slyvers, Mauro Malavasi and Jaques Fred Petrus, Leon Gamble and Huff , Quincy Jones productions and so many more.

1981 for me because music was in transition from disco to funk. 1982 was a good year. 1983 was also a good year. Same for 1994 and 1995. 1986....only because I graduated from HS. :-) 1987 hold dear to my heart. 1988 was the best because I could finally hit the nightclubs. 1989 was fun. I guess I love my 80s. :-)

I was kicked out of the Radio London Studio, way back when. The phone system was knackered and Tony said the first 3 people to attend could be on the panel. I worked around the corner at 10 Devonshire Street. I got the okay from my boss and ran round. We sat down and listened to 3 records. I remember one was ‘Don’t You. The second was Earths Kitt’s ‘Where is my man. I think the third tune was a Central Line tune. Anyway, when it came to giving our opinions I turned round to Tony and said I’d never heard such a load of rubbish in my life. Tony went red in the face and said “well that’s a shame because Earths Kitt will be our special guest next week. Then I was basically ejected from Radio London....

Well Monica, it’s easy to see why you say this song is the best of it’s kind. At the end of 1989 I remember distinctly, a radio DJ going through some hits of the 80s decade. But just before he anointed us, his listeners, with this glorious interlude of divine beauty, he said, “This is surely the best indie record of the whole 80s decade.” What more can I say.

@@paulm.7422 The BBC was run by public school types. class snobs and let's face it, downright racist (like so many of the UKs institutions) "Black" music was sneered at (unless it was jazz). I remember all the way through school I was one of just a handful of kids who was into soul, R&B and disco. Even at Uni when everyone was in the TV lounge watching TOTPs whenever a black artist came on it was a cue for racist comments and monkey chants. Female artists were also derided. This would have been an oasis of class in a desert of dross, if released on to the british charts by radio one.

Are there any places in London playing this sort of stuff (is it Jazz/Funk, Rare Groove or just '80's Soul?)?
