I am a beginner beekeeper from the Czech Republic. What you have covered in this video is the method that most people here keep bees. I thought I would start with some more modern method of beekeeping from abroad, but probably my only innovation will be to use polystyrene beehives. Someone dissuaded me from it. He claimed that it could happen that when the hive is warm, the queen will start laying eggs on warm winter days. Is this possible? I must say your work on KZitem is perfect. I watch every video.

Can you put a link up to these plastic horticultural lids, as the only ones I've seen in the past are 50x50cm which look daft, plus you cant really strap them down without bending the lid, 42x42 would be ideal.

Everything you said except I would go Langstroth. Reason is, if you like to make the boxes, it's way less complicated.

Does the poly Ashforth have the rim for bee space? A BMH review of a different feeder suggested this is a flaw of another feeder design but I can’t tell if bee space is molded into the Abelo?

Using deeps as your supers, does it take the bees a lot longer to cap all the honey? I noticed that with my bees last year and I was wondering if it was an air flow issue. It would take my colonies with a deep much longer to cap than my colonies with 2 supers. I didn't know if it was just those colonies or if others have noticed that as well.

Would be interesting if others have that issue too.

Making part of your woodware from scratch really does make a huge difference. I've been making my bottom boards and migratory covers (Canada uses Langstroth like the US) and it does save a huge amount of money... Brings down the costs by almost 3/4 (with current plywood costs). I just wax dip once assembled and it's set 😁

They were lovely and warm till you took their roof off can see why you get stung in the face lol, I use everything National Except I use a Commercial Brood Box which I like and prefer to the National much bigger in brood space.

Could you go over why you all use 12 frame hives and the US is still using 10 frame hives? The abelo 12 that you use looks amazing and I think the closest we can get in the US is the Lyson 8/9 frame.

I wonder about longevity of poly my mates is looking a little rough compared to my wood. And if full poly hives is near the same price as wood as you said. Maybe not for me. But My landowner doesn’t want poly so I don’t get to use them either. Insulation quality is undoubtable even in cool U.K. I quilt box with full super of insulation instead.

At some point I've got to get over there and check out how big those hives are compared to ours in USA. I've moved to single brood chambers which I love, but your double deep + lots of supers sounds pretty big even compared to the double deeps people typically use here.

Pine rots easier, that’s why they make fences and decks out of cedar if you can afford it, it lasts longer. I don’t know about anything specific to bee hives.

A single 6 foot long, 6 inch wide, 1 inch thick plank makes a single super. It will sit on a National brood box and takes 12 frames. Cheap and easy if you are saving money. Because I use hives with a viewing panel in the roof a couple of my hives have plastic garden trays as roofs. It's Cheap and was initially for a few emergency hives that I needed and all of the bees in those hives did fine over the winter. I use your design for my underfloor entrances. Brood boxes and frames are seconds from Thorne in the October sale.
