I feel like I need to apologize on behalf of the critic who said you need to work faster! I suspect I know why. Another hoof trimmer made such a point of that the other day! And then I saw mistakes being made because of the speed! Yes! The other cow was flinching more! Nate- please do not let those who do not know of what they speak to pressure you to work differently! @@helmaschine1885 I am not a hoof trimmer or a farmer, but I think he should slow down a bit. I get very nervous at times on behalf of the cow! The other day, from the camera angle, I could see he had clearly touched the corium and the cow flinched. And it wasn't due to a newer injury where there wasn't a clearer separation. He had plenty of room to maneuver. He was just not taking the time to aim and lift that false sole. I almost wrote a comment- the opposite of what Nate got- "Please slow down! You have a whole team helping you!"- but I stopped myself. I understand that maybe a bull needs to get out quicker- the issue of that radial nerve. I wonder, though, when he has a huge queue of cows to get through, the pressure is greater to move faster, so easy for me, as someone said below, to be a keyboard warrior and be just like Nate's critic! I am glad I said nothing. The guy is a pro and needs to figure that out my himself. He obviously cares about the cows, as does Nate.

I follow several hoof trimmers, and Nate is one of my absolute favorites BECAUSE of his gentleness and BECAUSE he takes the time necessary to ensure the animal is as comfortable as a reasonable level of care can make it. And there's not a damned thing "wrong" with that. And speaking as both a woman AND as if I were a cow, I'm choosing and sticking with the man who "takes his time" EVERY TIME. 😉 Great job, as always, Nate!

I have gathered from you, Nate, that most trims do go fairly fast. But when you run across the troublesome hoof, I think you give a little special treatment and you probably have a much higher healing rate than the commenter you mentioned.

I think I can speak for almost everyone here and say we appreciate you taking your time and making what could be a very uncomfortable situation more comfortable for these animals. I only watch your videos because the other trimmers out there make me nervous with the way they cut and just don't seem to keep in mind the animals can feel!!

The analogy with the dentist is great, and I would choose having my dentist take his time as well. I once had a dentist who forgot to clean his hands before putting his hands into my mouth. I got the flu from that. Not very nice.

You are so right about taking your time to minimize damage and pain. I had an orthodontist who, indeed of gently twisting my braces off, yanked them off and left fissures in my teeth from the force of pulling them off. I also work in a library and materials get destroyed so easily and quickly that if you rush repairs or processing won’t survive more than a couple of circulations before they aren’t useable anymore. I’ve worked for companies that had shoddy craftsmanship and had people fall through their deck because they didn’t take the time to make or install the boards correctly. Shall I go on . . . ?

I personally appreciate the logic you use in your decisions, such as using rubber blocks because the cow slipping could be catastrophic, or the emphasis placed on control and moderation in your cutting. you do very clean work. glad to hear you aren't taking the comment section "experts" advice and changing your tried and true methods.

I started watching your videos a few years ago, and gave other trimmers a shot. They were rough and quick and there tended to be more blood like a horror movie. You taking your time to make sure the cows are calm and safe and trimmed correctly shows you care.

I always appreciated how much care and precise work you do on these cow hooves. I've seen other channels and they just hack away without much care. A cow is going to be more adverse to entering a shoot when it's a place they experience pain. It's better that he's gentle. The cow is just chilling.

I love how you take care of them, I see so many people that are rough on these poor girls and it breaks my heart. It is always amazing to see how fast the cows re-adapt to walking normally, when they figure-out the pain is gone or certainly much less. (I figured that since there was enough pressure to cause the area to leak when reached, that the pressure relief would probably help make the cow more comfortable.) Nice work.

Regarding the person who told you to work faster…. I’ve seen a few videos of hoof trimmers who do the “faster, faster, FASTER” routine and the work they do on the hoof is noticeably below average. Even I can spot the raggedy edges and damage to the corium that speed causes. Very happy to hear (and see) that you don’t play that game and instead you do it the right way.

See THIS is why I like watching your trims above the rest! I've seen lots where they prioritize speed and end up nicking the cow in a way that causes them stress. If I were a farmer, I would want them recovering with speed and with as little difficulty as possible

One thing I’ve noticed about all the hoof trimmers in the UK and USA is that you all have a strong fondness of the cattle you treat and therefor have great compassion and concern for their stress and comfort. I’ve often wondered, what does a cow think when she is in the crush?

I have watched a few videos of another Hoof KZitemrs, and after a few video where I can tell most of the blood is due to being careless in trying to hurry made me never watch another one. You can't always help it, but considering how few times Nate cuts them, and if it happens how little it bleeds, that is proof it does not have to be done that way. I love Nate's gentle touch and slower and therefore more precise work. Keep up the good work!

You’re so amazing and keep them so calm and comfortable I’m able to zoom in an additional 2.5x and watch the trims close up because they don’t flinch at all… PLEASE keep doing you. I hate the other trimmers, especially when I know it CAN be done right, they just choose not to. It’s frustrating at the least. Love your channel and work!

I work in a cat only vet clinic. We have a saying, "go slow to go fast." You rush and you'll make mistakes or freak out the patient. Also, I know Dairy cows aren't pets, I know they don't need humans for comfort, but I don't know how you work so quietly haha. I am constantly comforting patients or giving them praise.

Aside from your channel, I also watch another hoof trimming channel -- which will remain nameless -- and the cows that are worked on in that channel move quite a bit while getting trimmed. You can tell that you go as gently as possible, which also comes with all the years of experience you have compared to the other person on the other channel.

I love that you take your time. I tried to watch another persons videos and the way he hacked at that poor cow was terrible. The cow was jerking her foot in pain with every swipe. He was cutting the corium recklessly and there was so much blood. But watching that poor cow try to jerk her foot away constantly made me sad. Good job Nate

A lot of times, it's not the rock that causes the damage. It often starts with a crack in the hoof. A white line defect, etc. That can give bacteria or rocks and debris a place to enter and to cause more damage.
