There are lectures from previous years also on KZitem but on different channels. He has always made it a point to make his course available on the internet. Absolutely love this lecture series! Brandon is a really good writer but he's also an excellent teacher, which is something that is missing from a lot of writing advice. People that like his lecture series should absolutely check out his podcast writing excuses (the guest lecturer Mary Robinette Kowal is also a host) which is also oriented towards newer writers and is excellent. I especially love the way Sanderson talks about plot & structure bc most people's advice does NOT work for me, but Brandon & Mary Robinette's stuff totally does. If their plotting also vibes with you, I especially recommend Season 11 of writing excuses, which talks about elemental genre (I p sure Brandon mentions it in his lecture series too)

I think Brandon Sanderson's lecture series is great BECAUSE it's a lecture series and not a masterclass - he has students in front of him who paid for this class and who will question him directly when he talks shit (whether it's misspoken, infactual or w/e), so he's more accountable for his words vs an author sitting in front of their chimney with an expensive glass of wine next to them, talking to a camera, with no feedback coming back to them except perhaps via a Twitter. He's given this lecture multiple times now so he knows what he needs to relay, what's actually helpful to the students and where his weeknesses are as a teacher (e.g. short stories - having a guest lecture for that is really interesting, though that was the only lecture that I skipped since I once heard another lecture where we mostly did short stories). The one weekness of his class is that his publication advice isn't as up-to-date as someone who got very recently published because he doesn't need to keep track of it for himself to break through, but basically just for his students' sake. Conclusion: such a good lecture series, fantastic that it's online for free, if he also records the one for this coming semester I'll be sure to watch along for that one, too

The lecture series is what got me interested in writing again actually. I really like how practical his advice is and how willing he is to go against common advice. Plus he was a big time and famous author willing to give a ton of good advice away for free - the least I could do was write. Edit: (Because I hadn't actually finished the video lol) Favourite technique is probably Mary's lecture - it's a very detailed implementation of common advice. The mice quotient feels like it's a retrospective analysis technique - like what did I do wrong and how can I correct it, not really something for planning a story out. I also liked Brandon's steal a story technique, I've been using it while listening to podcasts - just keeping an ear out for interesting stories. You should listen to writing excuses. It's Brandon and a few friends (including Mary) talking about writing. Less detailed than the lecture series but still great.

The Promise, Progress, Payoff idea is brilliant! I immediately thought about those books that I had enjoyed the book but the ending left me feeling unfulfilled. I'm sure we call all find one book that left us feeling this way. For me, there are several versions of this "unsatisfied" feeling after reading a book the most common version of this is the series cliffhanger. the second common one is for me again the need to create after reading because something was "unsatisfied" with the book even if I enjoyed most of it. But the third kind which I am mostly talking about here is the "unsatisfied" feeling when a book gives you a bad twist, an ending that didn't seem to fit the story, the climax was weak or just a variety of different things that can ruin an otherwise good book.
