Honestly, in the basics of strength training there should always be a hypertrophy cycle. What he is doing is super good if he can keep it up for a month or two. You cant build a building without a foundation. Not only is it good but also gives the body a break from the heavy weights. It's like a total reset so when you get back at the heavy lifts your body is recovered. May not be as strong at first but it will come back and shatter through what you were doing.

Some of the things in that book are little tidbits that are gold imo. one of my favorites is with dumbell curls to supinate at the top of the movement. It really REALLY contracts the biceps at the top of the movement. I would recommend it to anyone that does db curls. Also with the straight bar barbell curl to really focus on controlled negative on it so it doesn't bounce and then also focusing on not engaging any of your legs in the movement. Great video, Arny's book is still top tier.

Seeing the world's strongest man use the assisted pull up machine makes me feel so much better about using them. I've avoided the assisted pull up machine because I always felt like such a wuss for not being able to do a "real" pull up and have substituted pull downs just so I can save some face. In my mind it's either real pull ups or none at all. Silly I know but it's a quirk of the mind that I haven't been able to fully get rid of. Thank you for showing me the light sir!

Thing to remember with those measurements is those guys back then had no glutes and little fat. There’s also the inflamed muscle factor. If you trained high volume twice a day for a few weeks I bet your measurements would be immense.

To add on here and maybe you can correct me but didn’t those guys train to have a “Y” frame? Wouldn’t that account for disproportionate strength top to bottom? I’m curious if the current “X” frame body type caries more strength comparatively.

You're right about bodybuilders (especially from Arnold's era) having a disproportionate amount of upperbody strength compared to lowerbody. If you remember Mr. USA Tony Atlas. He won the Mr USA bodybuilding competition in 1979. In competition, he's recorded 520lb benches raw and 550lbs with a shirt. He claims to be able to bench 600lbs and squat 800 as his best. People who knew him said he has benched 600lbs, but he couldn't squat 600.

Its only as I got more into watching and understanding strongman and bodybuilding that I now understand just how much weight I was moving. I would recommend you alter your tempo during bodybuilding movements. A true, controlled 2-3 second eccentric for each repetition would yield more stimulation in the muscle worked and you'll end up feeling those exercises that are hard to connect with at the moment, such as the dumbbell row. Also, that way you'd end up only being able to do 1-2 working sets which would make the workout a as much or more a timely endeavor. All the best on your quest to most jacked WSM!
