Interesting to read about the fans! I always turned mine on too when playing but didn't realize why I did. Seems I subconsciously noticed how it helped me orient myself. I just thought it made Blade and Sorcery feel more realistic -- which I guess is part of it after all! I don't know if i've been to the same place, but it was 2 years ago or maybe 3 that a group of friends and i went to try that. We also had a zombie game (did not look the same), the rooms looked like that and the equipment looked like that. I have to believe it was the same company. When i tell you the lag was so bad they changed our battery packs, restarted the system, and then said there was nothing more they could do, it did really ruin the experience. By the end of it, we were taking turns dying because the game didn't register our movements in real time and i was almost robotically moving the "gun" in my hands to a point, counting to 2, then firing, then after another second would move again. We collectively decided we'd give the software and hardware another half decade at least before trying again Other peiple were doing something like a haunted house thing and we could hear them screaming for real, but most of what we were saying to each other was colored from frustration rather than excitement or fear.

Meta quest pro is moving in the right direction size wise. But the future I believe must be a headset weighing not much more than a pair of glasses. I don't think anyone would have a problem carrying a device in there pocket of maybe in a lightweight backpack plugged into the screen. They could even make it a couple of kg and user barely notice it. Sell a headset once, two 4k screens and all the best sensors available, then sell the brains separately people could upgrade every few years at a much lower cost than buying a standalone headset with new screens and sensors every couple of years.

Sandbox VR was terrible when I went last year. I went to the Vegas location in a group of 6. My equipment kept malfunctioning. My display would freeze or shut off literally every 20 seconds and would require a full reboot from the staff to get back up and running. It would then break after another 20 seconds. During the few seconds I was able to play, my weapons would not load in, so I couldn't actually do anything. I also experienced horrible frame rates for those few seconds, like under 10 fps. The rest of my group was complaining about low frame rates (playable but no higher than 40fps) and poor body tracking. Sandbox was kind enough to refund our visit, though.
