Those were my first skates, ever. I wore the wheel down so much, they had holes in them and had sharp edges. My mom had to throw them away. My second pair were white vinyl boots with red and blue stripes. I'm 2 months shy of 51 and still skating.

Here in the UK in the 60s and 70s we had similar skates, but with rubber wheels and a lace-up leather fastening over the toes. The only thing I ever had as a child that was 'top of the range', was a new pair of "Warwick Flyers" each christmas (the crappy road surfaces here ate them up fast!). 56 now, I've just bought my first pair of new skates in about 40 years, and loving your channel!

About the position of the rear wheels: there are plenty of illustrations and surviving skates from the early 1900s showing the rear wheels placed under the heel where we're used to them (which is necessary for certain spins), so my guess is that these particular ones might have been marketed towards beginners and occasional skaters, and so made to be more stable and a bit easier?

These were my first skates too. I remember wearing holes in the wheels. I used to loop the key onto the strap. The skates are long gone but I still have my skate key. Try loosening the stuck bolt with a little WD40. Spray it on and let it soak in a little. I've been a rollerblader as a kid and I've been trying to switch to roller skates. It's interesting how you said the wheel further back was more stable like inline skates. I've found that a big issue for me switching, I find that it seems so easy to fall forwards or backwards in roller skates. Also, you can get adjustable rollerblades for kids because they grow so fast :)

I’m now 57 years old and getting back into skating haven’t been on skates in 35 years. These were my very first skates I was given for my 5th birthday. A few hints, the back portion of the clamps should be just covering the knuckle of your big toe. That puts the front truck directly under the balls of your feet. Lube the bearings with motor oil. These are dry bearings and do require occasional oiling. You can use 3 in 1 sewing machine oil as well. If you van get some mole skin, use that to line the heel and clamps to help protect your shoes. And the coolest thing to try is film yourself at night on concrete and wash the sparks fly.

I learned to skate in that type of roller skate in the '70s! Mine had red leather straps (on the foot and strap). Mine laced up at the front though, so they were easier and quicker to put on. They were pretty fast too! 😊 They were really great.😁 I used to come home from figure skating lessons, and practice the same things on my roller skates lol. Ahh, the "good old days" in Scotland 😉🏴💖
