My players found a cave they were about to enter as the session ended. This was the perfect opportunity for me to try something I had wanted to try for a while. I decided to roll up a random dungeon using the tables in the Dungeon Masters Guide. Roll for rooms, exits, passageways, smells, furnishings, monsters, loot, magic items, stairs, traps, tricks and more. This took me quite a long time to put together and after I played it through with my players (who didn't clear it even after almost 30 hours of play) I realized I needed to adjust. The random table rolling method is great for the basic skeleton of your dungeon but adding specific details, monsters, npcs and what not is what makes a dungeon immersive. Having the rolled map and basic population makes it easy to incorporate specifics that link to your players' characters and the greater story. Definitely a fun experience and a great way to learn how to make a dungeon and plan a dungeon crawl!
