This is great! She may have missed the point of the basket though? The basket, I thought, is for grabbing things that don’t belong in the room being cleaned, not for grabbing all the clutter to put away later? You still have to tidy by putting things in their place in wave one, not basketting them to deal with later.

I really need to work like this.... I keep trying to clean like a normal person, then I find something that goes somewhere else. I go to that room and go, "Ah, I meant to change this bulb/Wipe that down/Etc etc." Then I remember that I need to mow, possibly run a load of laundry on the way. By the time I'm standing in the middle of a park, I wonder how I got there & what was I doing anyway. And come home to a mess🙄😒😆

This is how I clean. When my children were little I did wave 1 two times a day. Usually before lunch and dinner before my husband came home from work. As my kids grew older, they were very good at helping because they had had the routine modeled everyday. Wave 2 and 3 on Mondays and Friday. I mess clean in between. I washed dishes and table after every meal for 5 to 15 minutes. My bathrooms were picked up and cleaned daily most of it while I watched my kids while they played in the tub. Did you know bubble bath is your friend? If you take a towel and dry it down when they get out the tub always looks clean. Sometimes I sprayed it with disinfectant and let it sit until adults took showers. I did a load of laundry every day. This routine worked well even when I went back to college and then as I taught for 28 years. We all had weekends off. And people who visited our home always thought I did cleaning 24/7. Because my kids always helped with wave 1 they became more mindful about leaving things out as they grew older. When my children were young like yours, you get interrupted constantly. It was always easy to remember where you were and go back to finish. I love Melissa too, but your sense of humor is so entertaining. God Bless❤️

Thank you for 2 things….. #1 for showing your house untidy. After seeing all the “perfect house” photos on Facebook and videos on you tube, I sometimes feel like I’m the only one who has a house that gets untidy. So glad that I’m not the only one that has surface clutter and things out of place. #2 for the idea that grabbing a laundry basket and scooping it all up is ok. I clean so much better that way. If my house is clean and all I have is one basket to sort it’s so much less overwhelming than a whole untidy house.

Lol We all have different presets for auto picking up,scheduling challenges, stuff levels. A great rule. If you have time to go buy it will prevent you from having to ever fill one of those baskets. What you do is adopt the thinking of don’t put it down put it away no matter what it is it will only take you five extra seconds to put it away. That way it doesn’t collect.
@Pilot333

I am binge watching this. And this method makes the most sense to me. It is batching. Instead of a whole room (declutter, dust, vacuum mob) , you do all rooms only declutter (with a big basket) I would even do it like day one declutter, day two dust, day 3 vacumm and mob. What is left is daily tasks (dishes is no.1)
@kathy3178
Жыл бұрын
I clean like that. It is so much easier and takes less time. I also have a chart in each room where I divided the room into daily, weekly, and monthly tasks. Since the chart is in a sheet protector I check of what I finish with a dry erase marker. Then at the beginning of each month I wipe off and start over. I wouldn't have known how developed this if it wasn't for you trying these cleaning methods. I took what worked for me and made it my own. Thank you for trying them and sharing with us.

Yes! I have a huge list of all the cleaning tasks in my home. Divided by room and by how often I think it'll be necessary. It helps me get things done in small increments. I can clean a mirror in the bathroom while the kettle is on. Clean a sink while I wait for the microwave to finish. If I feel like the house is out of control I take the entire list and go through it, skipping the things I cannot be bothered with. The list takes away the thinking and I can just execute.

I use this system in combination with fly lady ;). Works great if the room is very messy. I do try to put things back in their place right away though; this have become super simple and fast after I decluttered (so I actually have space for them in their 'homes'). Instead, I have a 'messy box' (a decorative box with a closed lid). When I tidy, and I encounter something that don't yet have a home, I am unsure if I should declutter it, or something like that, it goes in this box. Once the box is full, I go though and decide if I want to declutter it, or I create a home for it. Of course, this box should never be too big or too small. But it makes things a lot easier. :)

I did something similar as a child when I had to clean my room. I realised it’s so much more fun if I just take a broom and brush all the clutter and dust into a corner (as all my clutter was always on the floor). Sure, now my things were a bit dusty, but they were on the floor before, so it’s not so much worse. Then, I would only pick up the stuff I wanted to keep from this pile, and everything went right to the trash. If I did have more clutter and needed to clean up fast, I had a box of shame, where I would but everything in, but the box away and not look into it for a few weeks, unless I needed something and thought it might be in there. Then I would also put everything else from the box into a better place

I learned the 3 wave system many years ago when I worked in housekeeping in college. I love it! But it doesn't work for me anymore as my main method. I adopted The Organised Mum Method as my main method for scheduling my zones and tasks, but each day, I look at the areas I'm focusing on that day and I 3 wave whatever tasks are being done in more than one area. I also real8sed I DO naturally use some of Fly Lady's tips, and had no idea until I watched all of you youtubers who trial different cleaning systems. So while TOMM is my main guiding system, I pull tips and tricks from others as well. And, Clutterbug was life-changing in showing me how to figure out my organizing style. And I'm using her concepts while I de-clutter and organise this messy house in progress to becoming relevatively tidy. I don't think there's any one perfect system, but every successfully clean person has pearls of wisdom that can work for everyone. And I love how youtubers like you and all the cleaning gurus demonstrate that it's about progress and not perfection. And you show it with such humor and grace! :)

I like to vacuum the most used areas daily, but then once a week mop floors and do a full vacuum. Bedding on weekends. Then towels and clothes randomly through the week. I do dishes daily and shine my sink literally every few days. It’s just been so motivating to clean a not so dirty house. It’s just me and my husband, but I have three levels to my house. Then I try to tackle the stuff like vacuuming furniture randomly.

I've seen Melissa Maker on TV a few years ago. I must have incorporated her method because that is how I clean. One variation for me... is keeping a medium sized, attractive basket, near my staircase downstairs and in my bedroom. That is where I dump things until I can move them elsewhere. There is no clutter in my home. But... I no longer have little kids with toys everywhere. Back then I had to use a laundry sized wicker basket in the living room to toss all the toys at the end of the day.

Love watching your videos, looking to help my daughters with their families. I learned so much from a book called “The House That Cleans Itself” it was very helpful but it seems they don’t have time for books. I still use those helpful practices 20 years later

What a great idea and forces (hopefully lol) to deal with everything in the basket too! Also I loved little treasures and decor but I had too much and not only did I have to dust all those treasures but taking them all off shelves, tables and whatever to properly clean the items they were on...in the end too many knickknacks end up making a place look cluttered and time consuming to clean....it took me a while but I minimalized all to only what had a sentimental meaning or something like a wall art piece I loved. What a wonderful difference and I do have a tote of things I can switch out but my new rule is another item goes back to the tote if I'm bringing one out

I too had to streamline. I discovered I had limited time and want to. Less “want to” than time if we are being honest. Beautifully curated vignettes are wonderful. In very limited spaces for me as it turns out. Empty surfaces just read as more clean even if I’ve skipped the dusting. I’ve chosen larger scale objects for the most part and only 1 surface per room. If I avoid dusting it I use that as the sign to reassess how much and what is out. I think it’s so lovely that we get to read these and find we aren’t alone on this journey.

Definitely going to try this one. Right now my cleaning routine is clearing everything from the floor and then I vacuum and then I mop the floors and that's it. I try to do this at least twice a week but most of the times I only get around to doing one. Hopefully this will help me also clean surfaces. Now the only problem is clearing out the basket afterword knowing me I probably won't 😂

I do a combination of both methods. I do the 3 wave method, but I do it in in 1 or 2 rooms each day where I do all three and then just tidy up the other rooms. It works very well for quite a while now.

Love how you have saved me time by trying different cleaning methods. I’m a big fan of Melissa Maker, have her book and loved her DYI cleaning solutions, saves money, no harsh chemicals and smells nice. She also makes some of the best micro fiber cloths. They are pricey, but she does have some good sales & specials. Thanks for all your insights, hard work and humor!

I love your videos and your humor! Thank you! My biggest problem would actually be putting those things away afterwards. Any tips? It also doesn't help using a laundry basket I really need. My brain thinking "oh then I'll HAVE to take care of it!". My brain when that time comes "oh I have two arms, I can just grabb all laundry with them, I won't drop anything! .....I mostly dropp something then 🤣 Greetings from Germany ;)

I am shook, other than the cleaning caddy this is how I clean, it just makes sense to me! Granted still a few tips in there to add to my cleaning routine 😁

This is the way I clean except for 1 big difference. The theory of top to bottom makes sense however I have found I need to do floors first then go around top to bottom. The reason is I have no carpet I have 2 very active havapoos and a husband with a prosthetic leg (meaning he can't remove shoes coming into the house) well my three guys are in and out all day the floors get very dirty. No matter how careful or what tool I use to sweep I find the bottom of my black appliances and black shelves are covered in dust. So sweep then steam mop first. I found if I do that every day I have very little dusting to do.

I absolutely love this! I've definitely forgotten to put all the things in the basket away before, but other than that one problem i get stuck on, this is my favorite way of cleaning. Thanks for explaining it, because i didnt know all of the details. Youre awesome, Ariel!

This is the way I've been cleaning for years in fact in my closet I have a couple of those baskets of clutter that I collected that I still have to get to. That's also a symptom of my ADHD 🤷🏼♀️ but I will get to it soon! 😊
