No need to buy plastic cups and bottles of water and juice. Stainless steel this time of year will keep your beverage cold a long time, even overnight. AAL she actually said it’s “mostly for”, not only for white/rich/privileged - so she’s aware that there are POCs that are rich and privileged as well. In general though, her perspective isn’t too far off base. Considering food deserts mainly are located in communities of color, zero waste isn’t an option for many non-white people. They don’t even have access to grocery stores, produce, clean water. So they don’t have the option to buy bulk items, avoid plastic, etc.

If there's too much food on it, it cannot be recycled. That's why you wash your Taco Bell cups before recycle and don't recycle pizza boxes even though they are cardboard. You can also chuck aluminum aerosol cans like air fresheners, hairspray, and shaving cream in the recycling bin. It's also helpful to check with the company that takes your recycling. They usually have guidelines.

@@BlakRainbow39 my local recycling company doesn't take aerosols cans and any other plastic besides 1 and 2. Taco bell and most other fast food cups are number 5, so I can't recycle those. @Furiends

It depends. Technically you don't for glass and metal but many recyclers just expect that anyway and reject the dirty stuff. But to give you an idea of how clean most plastics need to be to recycle. Plastic WATER bottles go through three cleaning cycles before being turned into resin beads. Any food packaging or condiment bottle isn't going to recycle unless you washing it completely.

I understand your dismay, but I think that a very crucial aspect of the zero waste movement is that because it is not widespread at the moment, access to bulk food stores and the ability to reach the areas where these food stores are located very much depends on socioeconomic status. That might not always be demarcated by race, but in America we cannot divide the zero waste movement from the economic oppression so often faced by people of color. We do share this planet, and it should be a greater priority for each of us to consider, however it is also crucial to consider first the pressing situations of poverty. Bless up 🙏

I’d just like to say that sustainability wouldn’t require millions of people doing zero waste perfectly but rather millions of people doing it imperfectly. I related w/ her when she mentioned feeling powerless when coming f2f w/ environmental issues but if we all do our parts how little they may be, sustainability is attainable!

Lacey Kean where did you hear this? And why would being trans mean she’d be 6’5? The average American man is 5’9, so that’s a weird connection to make

My city has a 7 step waste program so most people here strive to be as trash free as possible. In fact each house is only allowed (i think) 6 trash bags in a 2 week period. The rest is divided up into compost, cardboard, newspapers, recycling, house hold special waste (chemicals, batteries, paint, leftover motor oil etc) which is taken to a special depot, electronics which are taken to another depot, wood and large items such as appliances and furniture. Its really easy to be consciously trash free!

One thing I've heard said a lot is that it would be better if a lot of people did "zero waste" or "low waste" imperfectly rather than just a few people doing "zero waste" perfectly. Lots of people making small changes and constant effort is better. I'm not always good about bringing reusable bags to the grocery store (I need to get better about that), but one thing I've gotten very good at is bringing my lunch to work in all reusable containers (glass food containers, mason jars, and beeswax wrappers). I always bring a cloth napkin (which is now my preference over disposable) and my own cutlery. I also bring a metal beverage container that holds my hot coffee in the morning, but then I rinse out with soap and water and use for ice water for the rest of the day so I don't have to use disposable cups at work. The ticket in the video reminded me of a week recently when I had to commute by train a lot, and I used their app for the first time so I didn't have to fiddle with paper tickets... I'm not realizing that that's also zero/low waste! :)

I love to see that people are interested in zero waste. People come from very different backgrounds ( including culture/ race, etc). I am Hispanic and in my family, when I grew up- recycling has never been a topic or a concern. So, now that I'm an adult ( lol, "adult"), and zero waste awareness is more out there- I find myself trying to make better choices for our earth. I'm not perfect at it yet, but I know I'm trying. Thanks, girls for doing this video!

When it comes to periods, switch to a cup or cloth pads. It's something that gets overlooked and periods create A LOT of waste over the years. Try using a bamboo toothbrush (they're compostable!) or an electric one if you're not already using one. I highly recommend a Sodastream if you drink a lot of soft drinks. I have one and gave my mom one. They cut down on costs sooooo much!! Plus the bottles you use to carbonate are recyclable in a few years of use. I only buy soap from Lush and store soap bars in their steel tins. Also - you can get foldable cutlery and straws to keep on you that don't take up much space. Ditch makeup wipes and try the Makeup Eraser or Erase Your Face cloths. Use reusable canvas or cotton bags for shopping instead of taking plastic bags. Learn to say "no straw, thanks!" in restaurants. Reusable coffee travel mugs and water bottles are a must. Try a stainless steel safety razor for shaving instead of those expensive disposables. These are easy, cheap swaps that anyone can do. Use what you have until it wears out and then purchase a zero waste option.

Why she gotta bring race into being zero waste?
@junnieschapter8292

because in poorer areas, it usually has a lot of p.o.c. because of convenience and money issues, they'd rather go to the dollar store and get plastic contributing to the waster. and most zero waste popular influencers are white.

I usually bring my reusable water bottle, my reusable metal straw, and depend on my mood my reusable coffee cup or the one for the Frappuccino, also I usually try and bring my own food so I can avoid any aluminum and plastic wrap since they are not recyclable. If I go out I tell the person no straw, plastic lids, plastic bags or anything that just basically not recyclable. Pro tip: instead buying bread wrap in plastic you can make your own bread which is super easy to bake or buy one from your local bakery that usually wrap in paper.

Now, this is a real Zero waste journey! Keep it going! Btw, I noticed that I manage to keep most of my day zero-waste except for when I go the movies there is where I get low points because most of the time Its not planned I just go, so being ready even when you dont think you might use something is the best option!

Any of my ends of veggies or skin(onions) or bones goes in a bag in freezer to make my own veggie/chicken/beef/pork stock at a later date. Then it goes into the compost when done. We have glass bottles of water filled in my fridge and various glass bottles around to fill up and take. And I do have my Tupperware giant bottles for longer walks that I fill and bring with me. Literally if I can, I will buy in bulk where I can use my own containers. Or else I try find ways to not toss out plastic bags etc. And donate any egg cartons to local schools for crafts. There's just so much we can do that really aren't that hard to do.
