I'm 64 (65 in Sep.). I started as a solo artist at age 48, in a different genre, and have gone through everything you mention. At age 62 I started getting heavy sludge song ideas and thought to myself "right, no one wants to hear this from a guy my age!". (I have experience with heavy music; I was in Metal bands mid 70's to early 80's). But what I found is that no one who likes this music cares about the age of the artist(s). If they like your music, they like you. I’m fortunate to have gotten past the self-doubt stage; I’m comfortable in my skin and confident with the music I do and, at my age, don’t give a crap if someone else doesn’t like it. Budget wise I can’t afford much on my Social Security, definitely not those $150 pedals, so I buy the cheaper stuff and still get the tone I want for Sludge/Stoner/Doom. Right now I can’t afford a baritone guitar so I put heavier gauge strings (same tension) on my SG, B to B, and it works. Do the music you want to, regardless of your age, and do it first because you love it. If it doesn’t turn into money don’t let that deter you. Do your best to put enjoyment and happiness on a higher pedestal than dollars.

Limited finances are what i focused on - required me to learn the ins and outs of GarageBand (free DAW) so that i could get a sound i like with free plugins, and actually makes me more experimental in my music making. Being autistic, i have been studying music (not through books and classes, but listening to a wide variety) and what i find to be music i enjoy and what i don't and what are the elements that make those songs. Hey Channel Asylum. If you you are comfortable with sharing, what was the band? Curious about your motivations now. I think a lot of folks start with "stars" in their eyes. Tons of my pals battled that. The conflict between following the Hollywood story part of it, and doing it to find what you love about it. It really does mess a bunch with the head. Curious if now that you have had some space, if your interest in music and art is more holistic? I can only imagine that it is. There are no "right" answers of course. Just curious. It's an awesome topic. Have a rad weekend! Bunn

@@thebunn Yes they were my first band and my forever family, we did lots of local shows & I conquered stage fright with their help. It would be years later until I found my true, authentic voice with my solo projects. Before we could complete our album my guitarist passed away, and life took precedence. Off and on we were together for 10 years in all, got a handful of recording down but my heart always loved performing the best and hated the studio 😂 I learned later I was just made for more dynamic, not just rock. Life has a way of pushing you around to get you where you need to be. And I had a lot of trauma to heal before I could trust my voice & compositions, before I could stop doing what I thought people would like & instead make the art for ME… knowing only then, will the right people find me & adore me for being myself, because that’s where we create the most impact; through authenticity, not what we think people “want to hear”. So yes, my art is all mine these days. I use my voice authentically in music, as well as for creating appropriate boundaries with the world and boy has this girl learned to say NO! lol people pleasing was something I struggled with for a long time. P.S Thank you for the sub! I am beginning to create content again (music, vlog, etc) & will update my poor neglected channel very soon! Sorry to jump in unannounced but I'm just curious to hear more about what you mean when you say you are "looking to fit into a niche genre"? I'm most definitely in the same boat when it comes to limited musical skills, but it was only when I stopped thinking about "fitting in" anywhere that my creative output exploded. That's when I truly fell in love with the creative process and discovered just how much I enjoy creating music/art. Before that it was always a mixed bag of expectations and horrendous self-doubt and criticism. I wasn't creating for/from me, but always with an idea of other people's expectations in mind. That's the only reason I'm asking. It's good and helpful to have a clear idea of where we are heading sometimes, in order to make the way there a little smoother. Anyway, don't be discouraged by negative thoughts and spirals. We all have them. Keep pursuing your creative dreams and goals!

I guess this is the right video to let you know this - I stumbled upon the very first video in this series in January. So, I decided to take the challenge myself, slightly tweaked - have 1 song ready per month. So far, we have 3 singles released with my band (1 from last year, so it doesn’t count), I have another single out with a separate artist, a 4-song EP with yet another singer is in the final stages. All in all, if all things are well, I am on track to release a 4-song EP, 8-song album, and begin work on two more 5-song EPs by the end of the year. Is anybody listening to the singles? Fuck no, but it feels good to finally be putting stuff out there and to have a game plan. After that, come whatever may. You keep grinding and I’ll keep grinding. Or don’t, I don’t want to push you to burnout or something :D

Love love love this series and where you are at!!! This is so much more than just about music creation, there's a lot of discovery in this series. Mega like. My favorite line that is understated here is "Not looking for other peoples results". That's heavy. We, as people, are constantly rating our ourselves with the results, lifestyles and accomplishment of others. This is nothing new. What I love is realizing when it's happening in your own life, acknowledging it as a hurdle to overcome and making the necessary changes in our outlook to get past it. The satisfaction of checking a box off on your goal list is so much better than on someone else's you've mirrored! along

I have had music in my head that I haven't done anything about, for decades. But with the big 60 just around the corner I said "fuck it" and picked up the guitar for the first time about a year ago. Being dumber than a bag of rocks most of the time there is... shall we say, a bit of a uphill battle ahead of me. I have had several people telling me that I have less than a snowballs chance in hell to learn the guitar. When I was in my twenties I would very likely have allowed their opinions to set the limits for myself. But having passed the midpoint in life has given me quite the perspective on other peoples opinions. I'm perfectly aware of my limitations but I love a challenge and I prefer a slight uphill in life. It keeps me on my toes. Being on the spectrum along with ADHD as well gives me an edge whenever something peaks my interest - the patience of a fucking crocodile. I have spent soo much time trying to fit in and be accepted by the rest of the world, only to be rejected over and over. But I'm done with that. I know what I like and what makes me happy. That is what I will focus on for the rest of my life. Now, where's the guitar...

A friend recommended your video series as a possible aid for my condition. Here's the skinny: When I was 4 (I'm 60 now) it was obvious I was left-handed. My Grandmother would hold my left hand behind my back and force me to write right handed - and spank me if I slipped. (This was 1966, it was a different world.) Anyway, this didn't make me right handed. What it did, was create a schism between the still-developing hemispheres of my brain. I developed a stammer, and epileptic seizures, and a host of other neurological issues. And one which I didn't even realize until 5 years ago, at age 55 - I cannot do two different things with my hands. I can make the same motion with both hands, or move one and keep one still. But two different simultaneous motions, nope. (You know the kid's game, "pat your head and rub your belly, then switch"? I can't even start that. I can double-pat, or double-rub, but not both.) So I got a guitar to see if I could learn to play it and maybe re-wire my internal disconnect. So far, no luck. But I'm willing to see what I *can* accomplish.

Another great video! May these never cease. Some of the themes and ideas here remind me of a quote from Henry David Thoreau: "A man's wealth is measured by what he doesn't need." I'm in a very similar boat, and it took me rougly 30 years to realize that there is great value in being something or someone else, in an artform dominated by a typical formula, perspective and skillset that you simply don't have, or a perspective and way of doing things that you don't necessarily share or have access to. Limitations force creativity, and when you don't have the ability to mimic, you have to carve your own path and draw from your own uniqe strengths. You have to innovate, by necessity. And there is power in this. As outsiders, we have something that other don't: access to the other side. By definition. I think this is equally a privilege and a curse. It's mostly up to you. And lastly, art is about expressing something that is, and can only be, a personal and subjective experience. That is THE metric that matters, at the end of the day. Ideas about playing fast, being perfectly on the beat or even perfectly in key are only relevant as means to deliever the intended message, the end result. They are nothing in and of themselves, and may not even matter that much to what you are setting out to do.

Hey M, I relate! It seems like this sort of path is the only path to realizing what is truly meaningful to many of us. Weather it "succeeds" or "fails" does not really matter. In the end, I hope to have used my time in that which was the most meaningful, that connected me to people that motivated my development and added to a richer experience and perspective of it all. Our curiosity and and a little bit of effort every day seems to "move the needle" a lot more than anything else. At least for me. I lost a business in 2014 and went to working for a moving company to survive. It's been the steady, day by day "do what I can towards what I love" that has brought me here. Here isn't "wildly successful", but it's the kind of success that I value more than any other previously. I'm really stoked for you. Reach for your "stars", one step at a time, with meaning and intention. Cheers! Bunn

Thanks for sharing Bunn. A couple of takeaways (that have also been takeaways for me in my life): be yourself, don't constrain yourself by labels and "effort pays off". I also see a bit of need for what's called project management. Your comment of boulders vs mountains is telling. Yes, you need to deal with each boulder, one boulder at a time, but don't lose sight of the summit! Or put another way, begin with the end in mind. The crisis of confidence can happen at any age - I had mine at 20, then 30 and again at 40. By the time I hit 50, I didn't give a *bleep* anymore! Full confidence! The way your videos are set up are also extremely chill to me. The editing is perfect and the way you get your points across really resonate. I'm starting to realize that my songs don't need to be perfect, because nothing is ever perfect to the artist. I think at a certain point we actually start to hurt our music rather than help it when we obsess over making it perfect. My life really changed for the better when i realized that i had a computer, interface, a mic and a guitar and that i needed to make that work. Theres so many online tools now that i've been able to make multiple albums, eps and singles using primarily those items mixed with vsts and plugins.

Your vid was a random pop up in my feed, don't know thing one about ya but I related to what you are putting down. We guitar players and creatives struggle with a lot of what you're bringing up. You make a lot of great points about how to put some focus in the right spots. Cheers!

damn, great vid to watch today. i was just telling my lady why i was down. I'm 30 now. i constantly look back on what i DID in music and not what im doing or could be doing. i haven't felt inspired. I feel stale when i try to write or even just noodle. It lead me to not playing often at all. feeling like "i don't have it anymore." luckily i have support in those i reach out to lately about it, most of whom are people i've played with before it helps to know i'm for sure not the only one who goes through this or is going through this. back to playing everyday and i started to just remember why i started. It's fun. back to having fun and it's all coming back. thanks for sharing.

Excellent as always man. I would love more videos from you but I realise that the quality and thought that goes into these is very high. I can tell that you are not going to just put something out just because you set that goal, it's got to be right and i think your videos are always worth waiting for. In saying all that it's easy to stagnate and never release anything because you feel it's not good enough yet so I commend you for pushing forward and taking us along for the ride. Cheers!

As a 54 y/o looking to create a sort of second career through music and other content online, I share many of the same challenges and concerns as you. My main challenges are: deficit cash flow at present; lofty goals that require considerable additional time and effort to reach; somewhat niche content that won’t necessarily appeal to a huge demographic, but hopefully those who do like it will be committed. I wish you continued success in your efforts, I’m confident you will succeed.

Just over a week ago after my last upload, I decided to put all my music stuff away-guitar is in its case, cables are wound and hanging on a stand, and MIDI keyboard was disconnected and propped up in a corner. Your opening thought in this video felt like you've been spying on me. Upon finishing your video (as with all of your uploads), I feel invigorated to give it a shot again. Or maybe just make only one riff that feels fun to play... Been following you for a hot minute and it's been long overdue for me to take supporting you more seriously (you're getting a new Patreon member soon). What you do is criminally underrated and undervalued. Horns from FL.

Wow awesome video man, I'm 58 was playing in bands since 81, called it a day a couple of years ago ,not because I was feeling old ( which I was hehe) but dealing with band members and all the frustration that came with that shit was too much to take in the end, so I just write at home for fun now which feels a bit pointless sometimes and I do feel like I wasted many years trying to "make it" and it has affected my mental health but I had some awesome moments over the years and played some incredible gigs opened for international groups and made a few good records so it's not so bad....peace

Man, if your sludge metal career doesn’t take off, the level of production is awesome. This at least in the end should be a showcase of what you can do for branding, production, editing. I think you have a very successful future career there if the sludge metal stuff doesn’t take off.

Love the conclusions you've come to. Without the bad stuff, you never think much about the important stuff. What is important is to swim out to the other side and learn lessons... I don't know if it's a coincidence or if that's the way of the world, but the bad passages fire up my inspiration... when everything's peachy, I have much less to sing about :) great video

So many younger folks who are depressed and feel like they can't make their futures better and are unfortunately no longer alive because of it. You are living proof that age is just an number and anyone can do great things. I really wish they got the chance to see what you have to say on this sort of stuff. Yow this is neat stuff! I used to have social anxieties when I was a kid but when I got into college my speech professor gave us a technique on how to practice by talking myself to the mirror while reciting my poem before the presentation for finals and it ended well & passed the exam. Studying & Practice is always the way of life.

Big advantage of not having much musical education, is that you can think outside the box, because naturally you don't have much knowledge of what the box is. Embrace your own ideas, and QUIT JUDGING THEM! If you have found an idea that you like, there will be others who will enjoy it, don't try to understand it, just run with it!

Loved the video, great editing btw, but especially the message; the mountain analogy is one I used before aswell, a bit different but as goes: If you want to climb the mountain, you have to start walking and if you keep walking, no matter the speed, the view will get better and better. Have fun on the way, don't just focus on the goal, but also enjoy the view every now and then, appreciate what you've accomplished. Also it won't always be easy, but that's how life is; if you just keep walking you'll eventually leave the mist and step out into the sunlight again.

Great video, When I was younger I felt like I had all the time in the world. I thankfully spent the time making music and growing my skill. I’m a keyboard/piano guy first and guitar guy second and found that there can be too many choices from all my sounds to get lost and loose inspiration. By focusing on what’s in front of me and being ok with choosing a few things I feel that it helps let the creativity flow

My favorite quote: the best moment to start was early in life, the next best moment is now. My second favorite: Tomorrow you will be a day older whatever you choose to do or not to do. So, you are 50, so what, in ten years you will be 60 no matter what, so just do and stop questioning yourself or looking at regrets from the past, if you do, you are your own hurdle. Having survived from a serious illness taught me a lot of things about life and what's important, and not looking at the past is one of it, forward is the only way to go, and you don't know how long that road is, so make sure to get the most out of every step because you don't know when your last one will be.
