This type of headdress was worn by Manchu women during the late Qing dynasty.
It is said that, originally, Manchu women's hair was arranged over a form in some simple shapes.
In the late Qing dynasty, the hairstyles of Royal Concubines became taller and taller, bigger and bigger, and real hair was no longer enough to complete this hairstyle, so the classic "da la chi"(Chinese: 大拉翅, black satin shape) came to be used instead.
The headdress would have been elaborately decorated with tassels, jeweled ornaments, and fresh or artificial flowers when worn.
Later, because of its increasingly luxurious surface decoration, it gradually became the "label" of the Manchu noble ladies in the late Qing dynasty, and also became the most typical representative of the "Qi Tou"(Manchu Women Hairstyle).

In traditional Chinese art and culture, black, red, qing (青) (a conflation of the idea of green and blue), white and yellow are viewed as standard colors. These colors correspond to the five elements (五行) of water, fire, wood, metal and earth, taught in traditional Chinese physics.
